A Stone race.
#1Here is what I have in my head.
Unlike Trolls,Gargoyles,Dunshar ect, they are human sized and look like humans made of stone. The rulers are made of quartz, but there are several different types. Their favourite habitat is of course their own mountian towns, but they have moved out to live in many places, as long as these places accept them. Some places like having them around, some don't. In strength terms, a Stone is up to four times stronger then a human, and anything less then a broadsword, battle axe or warhammer, will only scratch them slightly. They think like humans do but on a slower timescale, since they can live for several centuries.
Like any race, there are good and evil Stones, but they often have a tendency to be arrogant around beings of flesh.
Their great weakness-they cannot swim and will sink quickly in swampy areas, which they avoid whenever possible.Once under water or mud, if unable to escape they will drown within five minites.
All OK, but it lacks the details to make them come to life as a race, and that's what I'm looking for help for. Thank you for reading this. -
Re: A Stone race.
#2Living stones, eh?
I got some questions:
-Is it only their skin that is of stone, or are the internal organs solid too? (Are they mushy on the inside? :) (You say they drown, so I suppose they need oxygen)
-What kind of God(s) do they worship?
-What do they eat, or do they eat at all?
-Do they need homes, or do they simply stay out in the rain, covered by moss and bird droppings?
-How big are they? Weight and height.
-How large are their communities? How is the human\other races\stone race percent ratio?
-Do they have any natural enemies? (And: How do they go along with the other species?)
-How sophisticated is their culture? Do they use magic? Do they wield weaponry? What material do they use for construction? How graceful are their constructions? -
Re: A Stone race.
#3I did a race in my world of Hewdamia similar to this. And while I eventually removed them from being made of stone, they are still stone like and stone quality. Their skins is tougher and harder than normal skin, same texture but not stone itself.
They are my replacement for Dwarves... go look at them. Gison -
Re: A Stone race.
#4This kinda reminds me of that movie never eneding story one of my all time favorite movies. It has a stone that is human like and they eat stones as food and they only thing that kills them is crushing them in little pieces other than that you can't really kill a stone if u think about it. But it was cool and a good character. He throws stones too i think to protect the character check it out for some more ideas! -
Re: A Stone race.
#5Funny holla, because I was the same way and that was my first thought. The Giant rock creature pushing that rock roller.
They would be a very severe change to the local environment. Depending on their particular attitude towards civilization they could very quickly destroy an entire economy just by destroying some farmland and/or cattle.
What kind of things do they value? Can they be bought mercenary style? Do they meddle in the affairs of 'lesser' beings? I would think they would be very unwanted in any well established locations as any accident they have would have dire consequences.
Interesting dilemna having them around I would wager. Probably need some smart adventurers to figure out how to get rid of it without making it angry. -
Re: A Stone race. lodestone
#6in some fantasies golems and other rock creatures have an enchanted Lodestone inside. a lodestone is basically a magnet so the idea is that an enchanted one brings all the stone together to form a lifeform. the Lodestone could be their centre of intelligence
 and i just had a thought cracks in the stone made by weapons could disterb the power of the magnet and destroy the stone men. this would mean that you could kill the stone race like any other.
:D damn this could be something to put in my stories as well (not that i'd copy any of your stuff of course). -
Re: A Stone race.
#7:wink:
Early Ad&D had a monster called a Gem Var with many of the same issues that others have brought up in the thread. The idea of using the lodestone magnetism idea as a focus of INT is a real interesting idea though. What about the higher (hit dice) strength ones having powers that relate to magnetism.
The Gem Var came complete with sharp crystal weapons. And Yes, if you busted one up you just might come away with some real nice gem stones.
:hyper:
Turn them all into rainbow mushrooms and drop them 300’ to the music of the Anvil Chorus!!!!
