In Work
#1Another large area that needs more exposure is the In Work section.
If we want to return to the great tradition of the Flesh It Out (*bows to an enshrined print-out*), we need the people to see what is inside, and know what happens there. As of now, it is just an under-visited link. Maybe that is just my view.
How about a cross-over between the "In Work" and the "Recent Submissions" pages? Of course, it would be based on your profile, click the checbox if you want this behaviour. Then you can immediately see if there is a new or updated submission, or comments.
We could also return to sending e-mails if a comment comes in, presuming the comments in this section are really help-oriented and not just "Oh, nice, X/5 vote" posts.
And... I am really out of ideas on this. I just feel this part of the Citadel needs more of our attention. Anyone has an idea how to add to the design so we are drawn more this part? Without BIG GLOWING TEXT for example? :) -
Re: In Work
#2There is a struggle between submission areas that I am at a loss on how to correct or improve.
First, all the main submissions.
Some people want more viewing for the newest submissions. Top 5 is along the left side as well as the 5 most recent of everything is in the center with the summary. But those are buried well below the initial page view so you have to scroll to see them...as you have to scroll to see a majority of the categories in the left menu.
Others want the random to have top bill because it brings up stuff that may not have been seen, but them on top would displace the other set of submissions even farther.
Others still want the Hall of Honour Posts at the top since they were put there specifically by users for others to read.
Once you get to the category main page it levels out a bit because you are conentrating.
So, frontpage, what can we do to satisfy a larger group and bring other things out into the open? Perhaps I/we can look at some news sites and see how they show their information. Maybe there is a way we can arrange our data so we can fit more on the frontpage without it getting too cluttered. Maybe allow two submissions displayed per line and truncate the summary a bit more? Only show titles and possible categories more like www.cnn.com. Then we can highlight a few more things instead of our current setup.
I only rant a bit about that because I don't think this is a singular issue and I don't think we can pick on just one problem at a time when it comes to trying to give stuff extra attention.
In Work. I personally don't want to see the In Work scattered amongst the full submissions.
-I can possibly put a specific "In Work" sort option in each of the category main pages so that while you are viewing NPCs you can click on the "In Work" sort button and see if their are any In Work in that category. Might give it more visibility.
- Nope, don't have a second idea.
The index is a bloatpage and in the spirit of that it was my intention to put in a "Profile Box" or something so when you login you have a few extra numbers at your fingertips.
-How many challenged/In Work/Deleted/Requires Edit etc submissions you have.
--Hopefully a quick glance at this when you login will give you at least a chance to notice something different.
-We do need a way to let people know that something is going on with their submissions.
Emails, since you mentioned it.
-It is my intention to get the email thing up and rolling again at some point. It will email you whenever any of your sumbissions has a change of status (challenged/Requires edit/etc) and will have the options on when you want emails sent. New submission, etc, a lot like the old site.
-Thinking about an email list (recieving only) that when a new submission will come in it will be sent to the newsletter and then you can opt to get the newsletter through whatever options it has. It would have the entire submission in it. So you can probably get it daily, per submission, per week perhaps. It would also be a fun experiment to allow voting through that by providing links for each of the numbered votes and then allow a script to check email going to that account and accepting the votes by email. That way we don't lose the voting by people reading the stuff in their email. Would still be able to track voting and add it to the database and all that, just no comments through email.
