  1. Request: Search

    #1
Starting it now so that by the time I get to recoding it I have hopefully a couple ideas on how to improve the search.

So, what would you like the search to do?

Search only in the category you are browsing?
Advanced search page with category check boxes?
    Search by keyword AND author?
Search with rankings above a certain criteria?

What do you want the search to do?

(And, yes, manfred already told me it errors when you put in a ' which will be fixed before the search gets rewritten.

Yes, we want all of that and more. :)

    We need a...
    - global search on a keyword
    - category-bound search (could be done with a small checkbox)
Both could be done through the search on every page.

For the advanced search page, we could just steal the options from the forum's advanced search.

One thing that we could add, is to skip (via checkbox) the jump to a submission that is accidentaly named as the search string. For example, I want to find characters, plots and whatnot that are bound to a Pictish Axe, but searching for it would send me right to that submission. Bad example I guess. :)

Search entry and an advanced search

    1)
Search only in the category you are browsing (A nice little check box)
Search for user (another nice little check box)
Search for comments with (user or key) (nice idea, not something implimented by a check box)

    2)
Advanced search page with category check boxes? (yes that will work, and the first point rolls into this one) **ding ding ding, we have a winner***

    3) Search by keyword AND author
Would not the author's name roll as a search.

Strange... I have just searched for the word 'Ars', to find an older Ephe's submission, and all the found submissions are shown to have the type 'Armor'.

    ???

Aside: this is a BUMP! of this thread to allow others to input their ideas about searching. BUMP!

I actually formulated how I am going to do this when I was going to sleep last night. I think, after the graphics, the search will be next!!

Look at http://www.strolen.com/search2.php for my work in progress.

Tell me if I am going in the right direction.

Put it together into a workable search page...even linked it in the right menu now.

I limited it to 50 results.

Does not sure comments yet, but all the other checkboxes should work.

Will search by author as well that is what you want.

Follow the link on that page to get the actual boolean like codes that can be used.

It was a severe pain in the ass to put together but I think it will be worth it.

    How it sorts:
If the keyword is in the title, it is worth more sorting points.
If the keyword is in the summary it is medium points.
If the keyword is in the description it is worth the least amount of points.

All the points are added together (how many hits in each sorting section) and that is the sort order.

This may be just another technical toy, but since it seems simple enough...

When you have somewhat finished the search engine, you could tryhttp://developer.mozilla.org/en/docs/Creating_OpenSearch_plugins_for_Firefox.

Amusingly enough, that's exactly the way Google does their search-sort algorithms. Good work Strolen!

I have one for the basic search: if it doesn't find a sub of the given name, and there exists a freetext - it could display the freetext entries.

The old search sucks now for some reason. I think I changed something in the search function for the new one that the old one doesn't like.

I am going to modify the old one to use the new one like the old one but using the new one without using the old.

    I completely understand. :)

    I'm glad someone does.

I understand it, in an abstract way. Usage will be the same, the code behind it will be different.
  15. Re: Request: Search

I modified the old one new to not be old anymore.

Problem is that if you know the exact title, it won't go directly to it anymore.

    So, what would you prefer.

    a) It going directly to the advanced search and showing the results and not going directly to a submission even if you know it.
    b) If you know the title it will go right to it, otherwise it will tell you it can't find it and you have to click on Advanced Search to get the search results.

Actually, nevermind. I am going to put the direct search in the right menu. Then you can still use the # or name and it will go right to it. We will see how that sits with everyone.

Taking this off sticky since it is as far as it is going to get until v3.0.

The Advanced search, if used without a parameter, has a note about a submission not existing yet. A non-issue, just cosmetic.

But when I have visited the search page while logged out, I received the following:

SQL/DB Error -- [You have an error in your SQL syntax; check the manual that corresponds to your MySQL server version for the right syntax to use near 'AS relevance FROM lockmor_content WHERE AND ((condition = '1') OR (conditi' at line 2]

The submission you are looking for has not been created yet. Click on to create this submission yourself.

If not, what the heck are you trying to do? There is nothing, and I mean nothing, that comes even close to matching that. Ok, maybe there is, but I can't find it.

Oh, and: when will we be able to also search comments?
