The Anti-Violence blade
#1So, there are TONS of ideas to go with sentient weapons, but most of them involve good or evil blades and the like. What about an EXTRMELY powerful sword... that hated violence? How do you think that would work? -
Re: The Anti-Violence blade
#2Write it up and see. Just think about how the weapon would manifest its anti-violence: conditional usage (will only hit those who are violent first)? refusing to work (the most powerful magic weapon decides, nope, I won't do it anymore)? or will only work for Ghandi like people (weapon for peace). maybe it just gripes and lectures about violence. So think about how it will be peaceful. Then write it up. -
Re: The Anti-Violence blade
#3-Everytime it hits anybody it takes away their thirst for battle. So one hit on anybody takes them out of the battle.
-If/when it hits it never actually strikes anybody but pretty much minor concussion that knocks them off their feet.
-Aura around the person so that even if the person wanted to attack, nobody would ever come within range of it due to the powers it eminates.
-Holding it makes the wielder not ever want to raise the sword in anger.
-The user gets the knowledge that if the sword is ever used in battle it will instantly be destroyed. But he can't tell anybody that.

Re: The Anti-Violence blade
#4The opposite is quite interesting too...
What happens when the PC gets his hands on that psychotic, sadistic blade that feeds on fear and loss? What happens when the PC has to kill street urchins to get his sword to work? When the sword threatens the PC and cuts him if he does not abide to it's wishes...
Could a PC end up tormented, hunted and angst ridden, all because of a blade?
Is it possible to conceive of a "carrot" that is so good the GM does not have to resort to the "cursed weapon" cliche to get the PC to keep the blade (even though he knows it is hurting him)? -
Re: The Anti-Violence blade
#5Of course there is, there is always a carrot, or else what fun would it be? Immortality, Invulnerability, Immorality, all your desires will be filled, improved potence, you name it they will come flocking to it. Having to kill ever barely human peasent that gets in their way is no deterent to 'The ONE' chosen by the very gods themselves to weild this Holy blade. -
Re: The Anti-Violence blade
#6It could be...
-a sword that is scared of combat and pulls aside from clashing with other weapons
-a sword that can/will only kill Undead.Great at fighting them, dreadful at fighting living things
-a sword that only wants to be used by it's orginal owner
amongst other things. -
Re: The Anti-Violence blade
#7A Ion-Cannon sword. Lightsaber that deals subdual damage.
I wrote the Sanguine Widowmaker, a pacifist blade, if you want to check it out. -
Re: The Anti-Violence blade
#8My Sword Of Inar might also prove an interesting and useful read. -
Re: The Anti-Violence blade
#9I remember the Sword of Truth series... If I recall, the Sword of Truth would only gain it's magical qualities when someone actually needed to be killed, out of self defense or that of others, but the rest of the time it was basically just a regular old sword of +1 sharpness.
