  1. Administrator Shake-up

    #1
Been discussed numerous times with numerous people but haven't had the time or inclination to mess with it...until now.

The main idea is that we currently have 12 full administrator's. While not a problem in itself as I wouldn't have done it if I didn't trust you, the problem is the range of tasks the administrators actually accomplish. Full permissions aren't needed by everyone and it makes it just a little bit safer when you don't have to worry about clicking the wrong button when you didn't want to be able to do that in the first place.

So as a help to us, by being more specific with our role at the Citadel and giving more confidence to explore some of the permissions and rights you have, and others, by making it more obvious who they can contact about specific problems (perhaps, perhaps not), I propose a separation of sorts of the types of administrator's we have.

Since we are so horrible with coming up with level/titles I am just going to wing it and name them as it comes to me as I write this.

    We will have the

Lord of the Citadel: Which, I guess, is me in all my egotistical glory. My ego is unbound and the title will cause mental explosions. That title won't last probably but lack of creativity and a large head happen sometimes. I was thinking of making the title officially "Ignorance Incarnate" but I thought that might not hit what I was going for.

Used up all my creativity on that one so here goes the rest.

    Guild Leader (Regent/Master)
These will be the 'true' admins of the site that have full reign. Probably only need a couple of these, but whatever. :)

    Guild Marshall (Protector/Guardian?)
Basically Post-Nazis I would say. It would be the function of these people to monitor the posts for the Code of Conduct violations. In the forum and in the main Citadel.

Guild Guide (supreme lack of creativity)
Basically roleplayers that can manage the RP threads. You will be given the responsiblility to figure out how to set up the roleplaying section. Adding/deleting forums/subforums making and enforcing the rules nominating game moderators and such. You will have to figure out how this forum works and take advantage of it to allow yourself to run and play in games. This thing has a lot of great features to make RPing here much better. This RP section CAN expand to whatever and since the forum is slimming down there is plenty of room for more of it. I see it as a natural extension of the Citadel.

Retired Guildmasters (different title obviously, but gets the point across)
I was talking to AG (pretty sure it was AG) about this one night and he had a good title for them that I can't find or remember. These are the 'retired' admins like Agar and Ria who are (or were) a giant part of the Citadel but have bowed out for various reasons. I know you still bob around Agar even though you are officially retired. So they need something to show the respect and appreciation we had for their large part in making what this place has become.

    -------------

The magic of this system is you get to place yourself where you want to be. No limits on what you want to do or what title you could take or what color you want your name to be on the forum. Make up a task and title if you like, I don't care, you are admins and can do what you wish. I just want a more defined role and responsibilities so it is easier for me and you to concentrate on something instead of not quite knowing what you should or shouldn't do etc...

This also opens it up for more nominations for any and all positions. Before it was basically admin or nothing, now it has infinitely broadened so if there are some that we can reward for their loyalty to the Citadel we can make up a title and job for them. The permission system of this board is AWESOME so definately think outside the 12 of us about what title or job others can get.

They don't have to be admin/mod positions either. We have a limited amount of regulars so if you have a creative or appropriate title for a regular then lets do that too. I want us to have fun with this special title thing and bring our regulars into the fun even if we don't need another moderator. They can still be normal users but have a Citadel Given title to make them unique.

I really want to be able to give something (however little this may be) to those that have spent so much time and done so much with the site.

As sometimes happens with these kind of requests, if you don't come up with something for yourself I will pigeon hole you into whatever catagory or class my whim directs me at the time. So speak up, don't be bashful, and come up with something!

In the Main Citadel you would still retain your earned rank, this rank will probably be shown in the Profile and your username can probably be your designated color, whatever we decide to do with that.

We have 12 Administrators?! Where are those Admins gone?

    ---

As for safety, once we are somewhat settled (which will take... months?), you could add a confirmation button on some critical rights... delete submission is already covered.

We need to specialize and take pet categories for our own, or share between two admins for a more dynamical approach, as well as preventing burn-out. ;)

Then we can adapt our titles, and show our competence. Also, the categories could show who is responsible/contactable, like "Moderated by ...". Challenged submissions of their area of expertise would be shown to them first. MoonHunter has already given me the Dungeon to care about... hmmmm.

General Post-Nazis are okey, though. :)

"Guild Guide" sounds very unfitting, the good old Moderator may be better.

Retired Guildmaster is definitely a good idea. It could be used for anyone of us, should we drift away for a longer time.

Titles for worthy Citadelians are a good idea, too.

    You made me remember this

Ok, im still working through it all, but the following thought that you posted got me thinking:

    Major Category Differentiation
Basically there is a big difference in requirements between NPC, Items, Plots, and Settings. There are some users that excel in one section but rarely touch another. Everybody has their specialties.

So would it be worth it to create different "classes" per se that log experience in each of the different major categories? So Shadoweagle, who has awesome items but nothing in some other categories, might be a high level person in the Item category but a low level person in the plot section.

Then you have Moon and others that are pretty much "multi-classed" and have a higher lever in each of the categories.

The problem with this is that they might be spread thin over many "classes" and so never reach a high level in anything. Not sure how to solve that problem, but I think there is an idea in there somewhere.

It got me thinking of perhaps a little addition that could be put in for some extra interest (The thought was half-inspired by a computer game called Heroes of Might and Magic 4, actually) :

[ Names with () surrounding them are names Im unsure of]
    |_____________|_____Items_______|____Characters____|____Lifeforms____|____Settings____|____Plots____|
    | Items      |    Gadgeteer    |    Blacksmith    |  (Golem crafter)|  Trap-artist  |  Merchant  |
    | Characters  |  Blacksmith    |      Hero      |    Beastmaster  |    Lord      |    King    |
    | Lifeforms  | (Golem Crafter) |    Beastmaster  |    Conjurer    |  (Naturalist)  |(Forest lord)|
    | Settings    |    Trap-artist  |      Lord      |  (Naturalist)  | Constructionist|  Emperor    |
    | Plots      |    Merchant    |      King      |  (Forest Lord)  |    Emperor    |    Diety  |

    ||Special Class||- Dungeon Master -||

Ok, now for the explaination. For every (insert percentage here) of a persons posts in a certain category, that category becomes a main section for them.

So say that the base percentage for a main category was 30%, and 40% of Harolds posts were in Lifeforms, and 32% of his posts are in Characters, Harold becomes a Beastmaster. The title 'Beastmaster' appears under his name in the forums (for example, where your 'Ignorance Incarnate' message is), and therefore everyone in the forums knows he specialises in characters and creatures.

This can be left to just that stage, for a fun aspect, but what about this as well:

I see that level 5 in your experience levelling system doesnt give any bonuses. How about, at level 5,  people gain the ability to specialise (Gain these classes).

Harold has 8 posts in Characters, and 7 posts in Lifeforms. He has recently gained level 5, and so his specialty is therefore, Beastmaster.
Since Harold is a beastmaster, When he votes a + or - in the Characters, or Lifeforms categories, His votes give or take away an extra 1 experience point.

    Now for a different view:
If harold has 60% in Items, so he has posted 10 times in items, and only a few in other categories, he specialises as a Gadgeteer. This means it is assumed he knows a bit about items. Any votes he makes in items, gives  or takes 2 extra experience points, and posts in other categories give only the normal point.

There is a specialty class reserved for people who have posted fairly evenly, and who have posted at least 10 times in at least 3 categories.
Say MoonPenguin has 16 votes in characters, 15 votes in plots, and 20 votes in items. He gets the specialty class known as 'Dungeon Master'. You are required to be at least level 8 to be a dungeon master though. Every vote Moonpenguin gives to any category, has an 85% chance to give 2 experience points, and a 15% chance to give 5 experience points as a luck skill/power of the Dungeon Master.

Anyway, Just made all this up as I went along, so its probably got lots of unintelligable things in it. Either way, I think it would be interesting and fun to specialise. It would also encourage people to post to gain their certain titles, and everyone would love to level up to get the Dungeon Master specialty.

I think it may be best if I become a Retired Guildmaster (wish I saw this thread before the other one, but oh well :P) Due to my inactivity, I can't be much of use to the citadel. Perhaps one day i'll pull myself back out of inactivity (here's hoping!), and of course i'll still peruse the site from time to time, have a good ol' chat and give a few ideas and pointers to anyone willing to listen to a retiree ramble :)

Besides, it would be alright to be a 'prodigal Strolenite', cast down in the legends as one of the old admins. The new members will catch a glimpse and gasp in awe at the sight of the legend! :D ... >.> :o

I am willing to step down in responsibility as well. I am not completely retired and I wish to help you out codewise from time to time so perhaps I could get the privileges I need and be listed as "The Lord's Henchman" or something :p ;)

I broke it up into 4 different admin/mod types.

    Guild Leader - Me
Guild Master - AG, manfred, Moon, and eph
Guild Marshall - Scras, CP, and Kin
Retired Guild Master, Agar, drphluid, SE, and Ria

Permissions are basically the same although I am the only one that has full forum rights, didn't figure that would be an issue.

If you can still think of something else let me know, or if something broke in the transition.

I noticed we do not have user control rights anymore. That means that the topmost layer of admins cannot ban potential hackers, notorious spammers and so on.

    You sure you want that?

Gave the permissions, although spammers and hackers are hardly going to be deterred by a ban. Only gave it since I realize the same permission is tied into tracking IPs and some other stuff in the profile which might be handy for the curious.

I hope nobody is banning people without me knowing though...

...Actually, I will begin with banning YOU! =P

Of course I would tell you. But that night in december 2004 when that "Coke-kid" flooded the forums, I would have proudly banned... And bragged about it later ;)
