Everyday, most of us who pay any attention to current events (aka News) are inundated with bad news of all varieties: School shootings, terrorist attacks, thefts, and other misfortunate events. Sooner or later, we're bound to get depressed and collapse as a civilization (or maybe just stop listening/reading the news.)

Anyways, this thread is intended to be a place to list any good news which has happened recently. Acts of personal heroism, cultural improvement, or many other varieties of good news do, in fact, exist.

Well, we want to hear about them!

    Okay, just a short rule:

    1. Avoid "bad" good news: Please do not post things such as "George W. Bush has been impeached" or "Communist China is being wracked with Democratic rebellions." These are the sorts of things which start arguments, which do not belong in a thread called "So, what's the Good News?". On the other hand, "good" good news is welcome. Examples being: "Rebellions in Communist China are peacefully ending" or "The Dollar/Pound/Euro is going up!"

Good. Now that that's out of the way, here is today's good news:

According to the American Associated Press, the riots in France are lessening. After thirteen days of arson and other violence, the state of emergency which France declared on Tuesday seems to be having the desired effect.

Good news, huh? That is unusual :what:

    But good :)

Well, let me see: Womens' Rights might finally have come to Africa...
Ellen Johnson-Sirleaf, known as the "Iron Lady", has claimed victory as the first woman to be elected president of Liberia - or anywhere in Africa.

    Here's one:

The Japanese government is preparing to submit a bill which will allow a first-born of the emperor of either sex to ascend to the throne, as opposed to only males. If this succeeds, the second-in-line for the throne will be Princess Aiko, daughter of the Crown Prince Naruhito and Crown Princess Masako. In other words, women will be able to be monarchs of Japan.

The Japanese monarchy has existed since approximately 660 B.C., and has been lead by eight women, the last of whom ruled in 1771.
