  1. Polishing the new Citadel

List of stuff to be done AFTER serious bugs are finished off, or in-between, however our one-man-army/coder Strolen chooses. Mostly design questions. Feel free to edit and add to.

    TOP:
Align nicely user stats and stuff, into a table or what; can skip those >> marks; adjust [ and ]'s

    BODY:
    The Contents of a thread
    - align it with something another on the page, looks out of place
    - make the (Comment) links smaller than the items

    Submission
    - shrink the summary box
    - Hall of Honor, make date smaller
    - make other dates smaller, too
    - how about aligning the "By xxx" in the title to the right? Or to a fixed place?
    - in Add/Edit submission, the definitions should be smaller, also the >>'s and

A Scroll in a Scroll looks too unassuming, needs more impact. (Look at Books if you don't know what I mean). Also the comments then look weirdly. Need to emphasize it is a Scroll.
  3. Re: Polishing the new Citadel

    #3
The scroll in the scroll. It is still an issue. In that particular instance I feel it was better to have that submission as only a scroll index of both a scroll and a codex. Doing that you get rid of those big, yet empty, Codex entries and turn them into smaller "suggested" which are labeled as another Scroll. Then you can concentrate on the Scroll Listings.

They do somewhat blend and similiar circumstances will do the same thing. Hmmmmmmm. Wonder if a different color background would work to differentiate......

(Personal preference) Remove Marquee from the forum's submission text options, because...
    Marquee is EVIL!

Forum: clearer notification if there is a new PM, the top part with various links and stuff should be sorted.

Any page with summaries of several items: Re-format the submission title in a summary - currently:
    Midarans Lifeforms (Third Kingdom) (Any)
    - enlarge title a bit, make the categories smaller
    - ? put the categories on a line below the title ?

Submission: Left bar: missing spaces in category part
    Main Cat:Lifeforms
    Cat 1:Third Kingdom
    Cat 2: Any
    - add spaces, consider changing sizes and alignement
    - also consider changing alignement in the ID/Comments/XP/Votes part below, HoH too

Lists: put the 1, 2, 3, ... Next links also on the start of a page

Users online: still shows me, even if I logout. Unsure about it. (Probably from "Active in last 15 minutes", which is fine, but with a logout?)

Nested comments: ? align with their parent comments - give the content part the same size as its parent comment, the poster's box stays smaller than of the parent coment

Messed with the stat box a little and the summary title area. Have family in so will sneak in occassionally to fiddle some more.

Hard time understanding what you mean about the nested comments and the numbering thing though. If you could expand on that idea I would appreciate it.
  6. Re: Polishing the new Citadel

    #6
Hey, stat box looks better! Great!

Sorry, clearer: the Next Page link thingy should be also on the start of a listing.

And parent+nested comments... another option to try:

    ---------------------------------------------------
    |  User A      | Nice, more detail blahblahblah...|
    |  xxxx swords | ................................ |
    |  (date)      | .................                |
    |  (link)      |                                  |
    |  (xp+-)      |                                  |
    ---------------------------------------------------
        | User B  | more detail stuf, blahblahblah...|
        | (date)  | .....................            |
        | (link)  |                                  |
        | (xp+-)  |                                  |
    ---------------------------------------------------
    |  User C      | another comment, another blah... |
    |  xxx swords  | ................................ |
    |  (date)      | .........                        |
    |  (link)      |                                  |
    |  (xp+-)      |                                  |
    ---------------------------------------------------

    ---

Some handy way to link forum threads into the main Citadel would be nice.

Plot categories: remove the numbers from the Types.

Suggested Submissions: align the "Remove this Suggestion" link to the right.
  7. Re: Polishing the new Citadel

    #7
I have just by accident found how nicely aligned nested comments would look.
  8. Re: Polishing the new Citadel

    #8
    Plot categories:
I could do that but then their order is simply alphabetical. The numbers were so they went in increasing order of relative complexity. Will try and figure that one out so that the submission page has them in a particular order. I find them annoying too.

The "Remove this Suggestion" link is only on admins and the owner of the thread. Nobody else should be able to see it. An annoyance that the admins will have to deal with. I can shorten it and shrink it to make it less obtrusive though.

Linking Citadel from the threads, probably won't happen although I understand that it would be nice.

Display, just haven't gotten to it. Will figure out a way to make that work although I don't think they will ever all perfectly line up since they are basically floating tables and aligning those cells would be interesting. Haven't messed with it. Am sure I will be able to figure out something.
  9. Re: Polishing the new Citadel

    #9
Got rid of the numbers, see how that flies for now. When you add a submission you can see how the order is a little funky now.

Reduced the Remove this Suggestion to "Remove" and made it smaller.

I messed with the display a little bit. Made the stat box text smaller and changed the width so maybe it aligns a little better. Not the king fix but will have to figure out another way to display it to make it work perfect. Will take a rewrite of the comments and replies however and that will take a little bit of work to get right. Don't lose hope though, still on my list.

  10. Re: Polishing the new Citadel

    #10
I have by accident stumbled on the fact that there is a post of mine classed as "Hidden", with a note from MoonHunter requesting some re-write. No problem with that, it could just take me another month or two until I got to it...

...so, unless I happen to look into my profile or some other place, which I don't do very often, and my eye happens to notice that place, I don't even know such a thing exists. Could handle more exposure in the right column of the page; however, it could conflict with the need to keep database calls at a minimum.

    ---

The "Show All" link in all the categories could be moved on the main page only. It seems misplaced in the categories.

    ---

The "Updated" comment does not count as a regular comment, which is all fine. However, the submission thus updated does not seem to move upwards in the "Last 20 Submissions With Comments" and the like.

    ---

The links in the left column do not work (the "Type" - All, Articles, Dungeons, ...).

    ---

    Right column of the page:

    - the shoutbox uses a fixed-color background in submissions, it should be changed into a color relevant to the theme (it is all fine on the other pages)
    - but thanks to that, the large empty place below the shoutbox is made visible, so drop it/shorten it, and...
    - put another thin horizontal line below the shoutbox, to separate ti from the other content
    - shift the small links a tiny bit to the right, so they are aligned with the headers of the sections

    ...
[ Place reserved for more stuff about the right column. We need to toy with it a bit more. ]
    ...

  11. Re: Polishing the new Citadel

    #11
In Codices, the submissions that are linked-in are not posted in their entirety (replies to comments and scroll posts). The reasons are more than obvious, but there could be added a link that says "There is more to this post than shown here, follow this to see it whole" or the like. Perhaps it is overdoing the thing, but some codex posts show their whole content, some don't. Depending on this we could add another carrot for people to follow. :)
  12. Re: Polishing the new Citadel

    #12
I guess you will have to follow this when you really have the time...

The counting of comments is not quite perfect. I know there is all matter of reasons for it, but the result is you can't be definitely sure how many comments a post actually has, even if seeing the number in a submission's summary. There could be also bugs or older data, and even lost data - stuff marked as a scroll comments, while the submission itself is not a scroll - it was possible to post them before. What happens if a scroll submission is edited into a non-scroll? What about nested comments, if their parent is deleted, are they deleted, too? (Got the idea when I deleted a BH comment, which had CP's note following... both vanished.) And there is possibly more. Don't want to fill your database with clutter and ghosts. :)

Case: http://www.strolen.com/content.php?node=2354 - the post has no comments or votes, but registers 1 comment already. (At least that is current situation.)
  13. Re: Polishing the new Citadel

    #13
Nested comments are still there, just were tied to the other comment.

    On the Main Pages Header
    Admin->Update Category Count

I didn't do it, give it a shot.

That is all I did in the past, it goes through and does a full recount. It might still count the orphaned comments Like CP's but it should clean up any other odd things. Added the orphan problem to my list though. :) Thanks.
  14. Re: Polishing the new Citadel

    #14
    Gave it a shot.

Not sure what it actually counts, here the reply for reference:
    Ideas - 361
    Encounter - 64
    FAQ - 0
    Definitions - 0
    Tips - 0
    Articles - 0
    Dungeons - 8
    Items - 44
    Lifeforms - 62
    Locations - 71
    NPCs - 21
    Plots - 38
    Society/ Organization - 78
    System - 48
    Forest/ Jungle - 32
    Other - 23
    Forest/ Jungle - 6
    Cave/ Underground - 11
    Swamp - 0
    Mountains - 7
    Water - 1
    City/ Ruin - 10
    Plains - 5
    Other - 3
    Any - 10
    Desert - 0
    Tundra/ Artic - 0

The item mentioned before has now two visible comments; 3 are mentioned. Go figure.
  15. Re: Polishing the new Citadel

    #15
OK, ok, there is a bug there. :)

I don't know what that is showing either, just know it is suppose to go through all of them and update them. Seems there are just a couple odd things out there.
  16. Re: Polishing the new Citadel

    #16
    BUMP!

Forum: think of a clearer notification if there is a new PM. Half the time I simply overlook it... but that may be me.

'Users online' still shows me as present when I logout from the main site, but not if I logout from the forums. Time to steal some code.

There are still now and then uncategorised submissions - so if there are any, you could make a special link for admins to see and eventually correct them.

Sometimes are comments on a submission hidden when I am visiting in for the first time (and sometimes even later). How comes that?

If replying to another comment, don't show two submitting buttons (comment and scroll) to choose from.

Put some of the emoticons into the secondary page - particluarly the blinking/moving/barfing ones. It conveys a silly feeling when there are things jumping above the textbox, forcing you to add them even if you don't really want to. :hyper:  :puke: :woot:  :dunno:
    See? :bat:
Also, the secondary page has not all of them.

(Ah, I know now which would be also nice to have... the :hypno: from the chatroom.)
  17. Re: Polishing the new Citadel

    #17
PM popup: Personal message Option > Show a popup when you receive new messages?

User's Online. I could probably fix that but.... It will show you logged out after 15min. It is missing a table update somewhere on logout.

Uncat submissions: http://www.strolen.com/view.php?node=uncat  I took the link down awhile ago (it was in the Quick Links) because we categorized them all. That script searched for missing cats and it still doesn't turn any up. Are there any really?

Hidden comments. Not sure I understand this one. If it is a codex, they are hidden on purpose?

Submit scroll button hidden when replying to comment. (good one!)

Smilies moved. :)  Second page has all of them unless I lost some.

Not sure if that is the one (can't get to it right now), but there is something. If you can get it somehow email it to me.

    Thanks manfred!!!
  18. Re: Polishing the new Citadel

    #18
I have seen that sometime ago on a non-codex submission... but not since then. May be gone or what.

    ---

The contents box of a submission needs to be adjusted to the new order: title, scroll, ordinary comments, then any codex entries. Also, the scroll link doesn't lead anywhere. Noticed while reading the {insert number} Islands.

FIXED: Scroll link removed as it doesn't serve the purpose it used to since scrolls are inside main sub. Everything else seems right now.
  19. Re: Polishing the new Citadel

    Finally noticed again:
    http://www.strolen.com/content.php?node=2851

The comments are hidden when you visit it.

    ---

    Oh: it is a Codex!

Now, the question is, shouldn't the _main_ post of a Codex have its comments shown? Or not?
  20. Re: Polishing the new Citadel

    #20
"Advice Requested" page should have a small subtitle (like the short summary the categories have) that contains a note on the limit imposed on submissions of this type - that you may have only one submission ever here.

Other pages, like In Work etc. could profit from small summaries that explain the respective section, too. But Advice Requested needs that notice.

DONE - Although any polish would be greatly appreciated. Put something on Scroll, Codex, In Work, Advice Requested, and Quest.
  21. Re: Polishing the new Citadel

    #21
(As per Manfred's suggestion) Help please! Something weird is happening. On several collaborative submissions that should read author: 'Scrasamax, Murometz' in the Shadow Codex sub, it keeps appearing as author: 'Scrasamax, Scrasamax'. I have changed it a bunch of times, and yet still this schizophrenia persists.  :P

FIXED. Scras's name wasn't rewritten through the codex so it was always the second name no matter what.
  22. Sans Serif Rules!

    #22
I am writing on a dungeon of mine and something annoys me greatly: The serifs on the times new roman fonts used on the main site hurts my eye. Yes, I know I could override the settings but it annoys me anyhow.

What about using prettier fonts without the serifs? Verdana is a tried and tested font that is present on everyone's computer, and it is SANS SERIF.

By the way: I hate serifs.

    The end.
  23. Re: Polishing the new Citadel

    #23
Hmm... how comes our dear Captain has two submissions in the Advice Requested now? I know this has worked before, and they are not posted at the same time or something.

After submitting an idea seed, a direct link back to Ideas would be nice. (There is one in the menu, but a direct one would be also nice.)

Add a link to the forum user profile from the main site user profile, and vice-versa.

The link in Users Online should lead to a user's profile, not to his list of submissions. (Very annoying if you want to look at a user that has no submissions yet - you have to get to his profile in some other way.)
  24. Re: Polishing the new Citadel

    #24
Ya know, I saw that with CP too and made a note of it. Will be a bit before I can get into the code and such to troubleshoot. Family is in town till next week.

All the others, noted and noted!!
  25. Re: Polishing the new Citadel

    #25
After voting+commenting, you learn in one place (on the top of the page) of the + to XP, in another about the vote itself (in comment space). Could be put together. Additionall un-niceness: after you delete a vote, you get the note that you deleted it, fine, as the -3 XP message.
    1. After that, you cannot vote. The page must be reloaded first.
    2. If you wanted to delete an empty comment with a vote, the comment stays (still with the vote icon, though there is no vote anymore), so you must delete it again, both times with -XP.
Both are not that important. 1) could be solved by simply a different message "Vote has been deleted, you can vote again after refreshing the page." or the like.

Chat: forum part of the chat accepts and uses html tags, the Citadel part doesn't (there's more differences , like censoring, and the occassional smiley ;) ).

Format the user statistic group on the top of the page nicely.
10: Holy Scrivener of Extreme Wit
    [ Admin ] » XP: 5987
    » Votes: 12
    [Profile] » HoH: 2
    [ Logout ]

A little padding with hard spaces could make it more aligned (waste of space putting another table in).

A submission's summary is differently formatted on the submission page, and listing pages, which is okay. Newlines are cut out to make it smaller, though sometimes this produces strange results - particularly if there are no spaces between words afterwards. Another case in point:
"Let me to battle, Brother. I shall sweep thine enemies as the wind, and thou shalt have vict'ry." -St. Vedast's revelation to Hural Winner of The Shards of the Storm Quest. - quest winner mark should have its own line, and possibly other formatting.

? Add a link to Messages on the main site if there is a new PM?

? Add the (+/-) on replies to scroll comments, or scroll comments, too?
  26. Re: Polishing the new Citadel

    #26
-blockquotes inside a scroll: Sorely needed but not available

-Posting as another user and adding myself as contributor: Needed it now (Muro is the main author and I am a co-author), but I was listed as both. I had to A) Add Muro as post owner and then B) Edit myself in as a contributor.

-More layout html control... I want headers! I want formatting! I hate that some of my subs look like they have been pulled out a donkey's arse!
  27. Re: Polishing the new Citadel

    #27
What would be nice would be a way to change the type of submission, as demon-strated (:)) by my submission of Demons as unique lifeforms. Apart from deletion/recreation, I can't see how to correct the issue.
  28. Re: Polishing the new Citadel

    #28
valadaar: It is surprisingly rare that it actually happens, but you are 100% correct. I may make it an admin feature in the future but, at the moment, I usually get PMs and I can go in and update that stuff.

everyone else: Good list with the other suggestions too!

I will try and mess with some of this today and tomorrow...as best I can....Mathom save me.

It'd be really cool.  No, incredibly cool if I could see what I voted on a sub.  I don't want to know what anyone else voted, just me.  Among other things, if I re-review an edited sub, I don't want to vote the same if I thought it was better than before.

Not that it is an end all, but my computer displays the large font sizes in that family. If you can come up with another one that might work better though I would be willing to give it a try.

I create adventure modules, not plots!

I love aforementioned modules. However, they create a dangerous trend: When I release said module it is hard for other plots to compete. A plot is a brief sketch, while an adventure module is... the whole nine yards!

So, in the name of all that is fair: Should we differentiate between plots and adventure modules on the main site?
  35. Re: Polishing the new Citadel

    #35
This has been annoying me for a bit, and I'm just now getting around to saying something about it.  You know how our forum signatures are displayed on our profile page on the Citadel proper?  Can you fix it so that html tags, like italics, that we put in our sigs will actually translate the way they're supposed to on the profile page?  Right now, it'll display exactly as typed, meaning that the tags are visible and not modifying what they're supposed to.  If you look at my profile, you should see what I mean.

Like I said, this is just a minor annoyance, so there's no hurry.

    Thanks for reporting and suggesting!!!

I just need it more consolidated so I can find them quicker and easier and start getting them done!
