New V2.0 Forum
#1I have supported phpBB for a long time but am getting tired of waiting for the "new" that is months from coming out and then months from being stable. Problem is that the current stuff is annoying and so modded to make it do what I want that it is a pain in the ass to update for all the security fixes that they have.
I don't necessarily want to change, but I have been thinking hard about doing it for a long time.
The current contender is
http://www.simplemachines.org/index.php
http://www.simplemachines.org/smf/features.php
Drawn to it for security and database size which is different due to the way smf does it searches. Those are two biggies not to mention that smf comes out of the box with many of the mods that I added to this one. Also, if there is an update, you click on a link and it gets updated vs. me spending an hour+ pouring through code updating phpbb a line at a time. Plus the mods that I want to install are done through a web interface and don't effect any upgrades either. Install and uninstall with a few clicks of a web browser. Niiiiiice.
Going to probably install it tomorrow on V2.0 and get the main site working with it to see how it comes together.
There will be no posts lost, it can suck all that crap right over from this forum so nothing will be missing.
Just downloading it and figured I would mention it to see if there were any thoughts on it.
This will directly affect the chat, although there are chat plugins for smf as well. -
List of useful features to me.
#2-Also allows each forum to have their own theme so if somebody wants to develop, say , a world, they can have their own color scheme-graphics in only that area.
-Also allows subforums which I know some people don't like, but right now they would be very handy with all the worlds we have. That would slim down the frontpage a lot while keeping it all easily navigateable and visible.
-Remove avatars from people unactive for X days.
-Users can show/hide (sub)forums, hide others signatures and their avatars.
-Saves a copy of a deleted post to a chosen forum for reference.
-Search friendly urls (that I can steal for the main site)
-Better search features (actually searches the posts instead of the monster word lists that phpbb uses)
-Message Icons by new topics (might be interesting if we get good ones)
-Says there is a built in spell check but haven't found it yet.
There are a lot more customizeable options in this baby.
Theme is suppose to be much easier to edit as well.

I am not sure if you can understand how difficult it is to do _any_ of the above things in phpbb. If I saw this before it would have happened about a year ago.
We are moving to smf! -

Will be working of this for the time being. -
New V2.0 Forum
#4I like it!
(It is near identical to phpbb, designwise, anyway) -
New V2.0 Forum
#5Now it looks even closer (but still has issues).
OK, done messing with that for now, on to the real site.
