Forum Move to V2.0
#1Had a thought and then the authors, those that are here anyway, could possibly help us with and make it easier to gather and mark the posts into the correct categories.
How about creating a new set of forums for the V2.0 crossover .
Under that new heading there will be a different forum for each type of submission with the description in it. Plots, Lifeforms, Locations, etc.... One for each main type.
As admins we can go through and split off the Main Submission and the Comments (if any) and put them into their own thread. During that split it allows you to give it an appropriate title. This will isolate each submission with their topics in their own thread. This makes it easier for the code to figure out what is what during the crossover since the comments will be in the thread with the main submission labeled already by the database.
This way we don't even need a numbering scheme. Each main topic will be a its own thread so the forum has already seperated them. Then authors of their own stuff can edit it and paste it into that new forum and could save us some work and confusion. If we leave the threads as is I fear that there will be duplicate numbers since there is no real organization to where many things will overlap. This way we don't even need numbers at all, just titles.
This will be a long drawn out process anyway, so maybe revealing some of this stuff in this way will rebreed new comments and searching old threads for other users. Chance to update and edit an old idea with a fresh view and bring it out for attention again.
If nothing else it will be better organized.
Yes, the forum would grow even bigger which might scare people off a little. I think only the new people will have a problem with it being overwhelming. All this is moving us closer to a more robust V2.0 so a little inconvenience for a couple months will be worth it in the long run.
What do you think? -
Forum Move to V2.0
#2Ooops. For those that weren't here for that discussion.
We are looking to find a way to take forum submissions and move them into the main database of V2.0.
So take all the lifeforms and get them so I can dump them into the Lifeform category of V2.0 so they turn into a main submission we can comment and vote on. Same thing for lots of other stuff inside the forums, we want to take out all the good stuff people have posted and put it in the main site
So that was my suggestion on how to get the submissions that would make Main Submissions and put them somewhere where I can make a script to take them and put them in the new V2.0 database instead of in the forum. -

#3Hmm... My webdesign and usability education suddenly kicked in and screamed "noooooo" in my mind. I think it would scare the people big time.
If you want my take on this: Create Admin only forums (alternatively admin and mod) which were invisible to the others and let us admins transfer stuff. As long as I don't promise anything, I should be fairly active in such a transfer :p
But... I think you should keep it hidden from the flock. -
Forum Move to V2.0
#4Machine gun posts.
If authors of settings want their stuff automatically ported over to the V2.0, a similiar process would have to be done in their forums too. Otherwise they would just have to move them and organize them themselves.
Once the Worlds/Idea Scroll is finished I will have a better idea whether I can use their current setup as the main categories of the site. The intention is to allow arbitrary categories so the world author can set it up however they want. That will come later, but thought I would mention it. -

#5Creating admin only forums are okay. That way we can break down/ copy threads, if we can we make copies of existing threads. If that is the case, we can delete down all the other "Posts" and then leave the comments for a given post.
We can also edit them to include their various elements.
Scrolls would then have the same lead post, with their second entry being the post, any others being comments? -

#6I don't think there is a way to make duplicate threads. Even if you move them and leave a 'shadow' all that shadow does is point to the new location.
I suppose I could just make a duplicate forum, completely seperated from this one. That is the only idea I have to make that work.
There would be issues on any new posts though, because we will remake the entire structure I can't just suck in the new stuff posted to this site because the 'referential integrity' of the database would be ruined because of all the changes. -
Forum Move to V2.0
#7The more I think of it, the less I feel like messing with this.
Lets first get the main transition going, move over to the new site and start with new stuff. Slowly but surely we can start moving stuff over or I can eventually make a script to do it. Once we move over we can 'close' these threads with a link to the appropriate category to post them and then won't have to worry about new postings.
The forums are going to take some time to sort out and then to make a script. Lets just go with what we have here and not rush this. When we move over with a working V2.0 we can slowly start on that phase of the move.
That is my vote anyway. I don't have the energy or the time to start another project like dealing with the forums at the moment. I need to focus on finishing my 'list' to get a working website. I have little enough time at the moment and with a baby a few months away it may get even less (although I will be on vacation for like 3 weeks when that happens and babies and wives sleep right?!) -

#8The reorg of the Idea Guild still tempts me a little though. Get rid of our current categories in favor of the main categories on the site. More of an extension of the site in, hopefully, already familiar categories.
Just my last thought for tonight.
