    I read this thread: http://www.strolen.com/forums/viewtopic.php?p=34256#34256

The creator is an experienced, nice and polite fellow, but his greetings thread had very little purpose beyond tempting people to visit his site. His site does sport a link back to Strolen's ( http://www.rpgrm.com/index.php?ind=topsite ) and thus I guess it is a fair exchange.

But what is the site policy on such greetings in general? I know some disliked Kevin Cook's dice thread, and considered it advertisement. In my opinion Sorloc had a far nicer and on topic thread with the added bonus of mutual linking.

    So... Anyhow...

I guess ads for Russian wives, casino, poker, potency pills and such should automatically be deleted, but is advertising for other rpg sites fair game? I know this one probably is okay.

    Personal take:

I don't mind, at all, plugs for other sites as long as they are tasteful and don't simply entail, the basic "visit my site" type post.

Cook's was a "look at my site" post because it contributes nothing. He didn't even post in the intro forum to start with, he came here to tell us about his site, not introduce himself to the community.

I didn't even notice Sorloc's because all he did was basically introduce himself. Where he spends/spent time on the net could be a very telling source for us and could be a new resource. I like knowing where people come from.

Ylorea and Kinslayer often mention their sites but the way they go about it makes all the difference. I visit both those sites often because of it.

If it is a "look at me" post, that is fine too, as long as it makes its way into Moon's monster link thread. I think I deleted and reposted a couple like that. I also immediately delete any graphics in signatures, especially banners. I think SE (or somebody) has an animated gif now that I left. I replace their banner with the text link. Don't mind tasteful sig advertising either. Hate graphics.

If you are a fellow RPGer and you have something interesting to say or share then I am happy to sit, listen, and even visit their webpage. Definately a judgement call which is why I rambled. I would respect and back any admin's decision.

Being known to delete a few posts on my visits here.... I too follow the "I don't mind, at all, plugs for other sites as long as they are tasteful and don't simply entail, the basic "visit my site" type post." They also have to have something to do with gaming, preferably table top.

In short, stupid/ rude/ thoughtless posters get deleted just like our off topic friends. Those that are polite, recipicate, or are trying to be good, are kept. Kevin Cook... once deleted... actually asked what he did wrong and reposted an acceptable one. This is a very appropriate post. Is this the wrong kind of site for someone who like dice chucking... sort of. But he is polite, earnest, and willing to respond to any questions (about dice) posed to him. And we can ignore him most of the time.

The IGW thread is full of similar links, with a great deal of explanation for each one. Many of those sites have recipicated links back here. Some haven't. But it allows us to share our favorite's lists as they apply to gaming. (If you have dumped your favorite's list or a few posts from your favorite's list into IGW, feel compelled to do so soon.)

To be fair, I also litter the forums with links back to Strolen's for two reasons. One, it saves me the hassle of cutting and pasting a whole bunch of stuff. (It is also good form to quote the original site something is taken from. You have the good graces to put up with some of my more charming personality traits and are willing to host the babbling of MoonHunter, you deserve the credit.) Secondly, and more importantly, it leads people who are interested in what I say back to the site.

In fact, when any of us post something thought provoking or really useful for the kind of people who we like to see on the site, we should link it back here. It is more than simple recruitment (or poaching); it is a way of saying "hey.. I'm like this, if you like that come and play with me.
