Having just noticed the chatroom option on the bottom of the screen, I've been struck by an idea/suggestion...

Every year, crowds flock to the Citadel to see the Trial. They amass in their thousands in the stadium, their hoots and cheers like the calls of excited birds, the sand on the ground shivering with the reverberation of their stamping.

It's been like this for a century. Ever since Strolen conceived of his labyrinth, people have wanted the challenge of coming out alive.

We could have a roleplaying tournament! We could create a labyrinthine dungeon and play real-time in the chatrooms...

Split up into groups of 4, with however many DMs we need and schedule gaming sessions online. The first group to crack the Labyrinth emerges victoriously, while the others are locked in for eternity :( and given suitable consolation prizes :).

Just think of the site tourism it could encourage!

The main problem is timetabling. Obviously there are busy schedules to consider, but also different timezones :( But it's just an idea.

Another problem (of which I've only just thought) would be: game system (links to thread on game-specificness!). I know Strolen would probably rather play Palladium, but I've never heard of it before! I think the only solution would be to invent a very basic set of rules for a homemade RPG, post them up on the site and use them. Improvisation and imagination would then become paramount in the game, and the DM would have to be lenient.

I like the homemade idea, but maybe it should involve some (or at least most) of the gaming systems played by all the common citadel goers, but perhaps the idea you suggested would be better, and certainly more in the spirit of the citadel.

I will support this in whatever way I can, but honestly, right now, I am having trouble enough keeping up with the freeform game I am playing with Ria...which reminds me... :o

For what it is worth, Strolen and I had bounce around an idea similar to that. We were looking at a way to describe characters (typically NPC’s). We wanted to come up with a generic way to quantify their stats. We were going to use percentages of max instead of 3-18 (D&D) or 1-31 (Palladium, I think).

I never did learn anything about GURPs (or GRPs as the case may be), but I though that it was a Generic set of rules. Which maybe too much to ask everyone to get proficient with.

But, I like your idea and am interested in seeing what you come up with.

Strange are the ways ideas can travel...
I had an idea, some time ago, not too different from yours!

Imagined a classical cavernous dungeon, with many tunnels and places, fit to be explored by any chance adventurer. Wanted it living and changing, not only with all (most) of the life-forms covered somehow, but also with features like digging through walls and creating new rooms. On-line.

Then I imagined the diffilcuties connected, all the possible and impossible problems, I better gave up.

    It may be possibly possible...

Would have to be a stable dungeon at first... or not truly? Reminds me of a certain Dungeon-Room Netbook... Say we all submit our rooms/corridors with designs into the database, and if you enter a previously unknown territory, you will enter truly the Unknown, being randomly generated!

Thus we can battle one another, without having to let one character kill another (but I would not leave out this option, just in case ). And there is still that stupid little chance, when your own room kills you... Could limit the number of death-traps, partly ;-)

Would still like some free-roaming animals/monsters. Perhaps a few NPC's, or a few things you do not have to kill?

Rules? Don't know about rules yet...

    Rules?!
    Not sure about rules...

Maybe a free experience-to-skill system, if you accumulate x XP, you can buy that skill? (And some gold may needed too.)

Note the threat: no level-ups, no instant HP growth. HPs may be a possible to get though, through a skill that makes you more tough, or somehow convert XP->HP. Say the first HP costs one XP, second two XP, third four XP, etc, always doubling. This may still be too much, but the limit can be reached anyway.

Now that we have those darn HP's, does someone know a way to loose them? Anyone to design a combat system?

There are currently about 15 active members of the site, so that would split into 3 groups: 1 DM and 4 players in each. The DMs could then collaborate to design the dungeon (á la Manfred's last post), and then (maybe sometime in the summer when we're ready and less busy) we can run a tournament. If more people express an interest than the 15 I have in mind, more groups can be set up.

I'll post another thread with a poll on, to see how many people are interested in this idea...

Hey! I would rather be a player so that I don't have to have as much of a handle on the rules (I prefer more "fast and loose" style gaming) but I still love designing dungeons and stuff like that. Can I still design if I'm a player, or is that tough beans for me?

Well, if you were a player, you'd be playing in that dungeon, so would it really be feasible for you to help design it?

Why not?! I mean you could be an illicit insider who helped build the labyrinth who's come back to impress everyone by his ability to get through even the most devious of its traps. Obviously there's still a lot of the dungeon you wouldn't be familiar with. But just imagine the furore if you were exposed as a cheat! Lots of roleplaying capacity here, so definitely!

Really? COOL! That's an interesting idea. Good grog, ephemeralstability

Or perhaps you're someone who helped to build it - and then some unknowing pack of authorities caught you red-handed at some crime and sentenced you to the Labyrinth's yearly trial as punishment.
  13. A way to create the labyrinth

There is an rpg game called "the well of souls" which can be played online and gives you the possibility of creating your own worlds with your own characters, spells, etc.
With a little work you could create this world in there and anybody can play it as long as you design someone to be a server for this game.
    The server can also play.
If you want to check it out you can download it from

The best part is that this game is free.

I'll give it a go! It looks good, but I was thinking more of an abstract pencil and paper-type game: although the complex GUI may enhance facility of play it's not really what I had in mind. I think there's a lot to be said for purely text-based play, since it stimulates the imagination more.

But despite all that, I'm going to have a look into the game!

I can see it now, Kassil.
