  1. Chat Bell?

This question may be silly, I am actually not sure if it is.
My programming skills are at a retard level.
But is it possible to have some sort of bell in the chatroom?
Some sound that tells users that are allready in the chatroom that someone else has arrived?
How many times have we not experienced that someone enters the chatroom only to leave again because you are not answering.
And after finishing that post(that took 30minutes) you discover this...

Is this something we want to do something about?
    Is it needed?
    Is it possible?

    Just airing the idea.

    Sincerely, Mike.

I think this would be a great addition if possible. I seldom have the chat window open to see if anyone has come into the chat room and I can hammer away at the keys for a long time without checking the room.

    Please please please?

I think its been discussed, thought of, spoken about for eons. I dunno if it will actually happen...

Never dawned on me to have sound. Not sure of the logistics of that but.....

V2.0 is handling chat differently. It will be similiar to the way http://www.perlmonks.com/ has theirs working.

It will be a module you can turn on and off. Some may not want the chat all the time. But if it is on then there will be a chat box on the menu on all the main pages. It will list the last 5 or so comments of an active chat and nothing if it has been inactive for a long time. The text will probably be truncated to a point on that chat window but if you stay withing the character limits you will be able to chat as you browse. I might have those limits (length of chat line, how many viewable) user defined. In all actuality you could just chat in the menu area if you so desired if the settings were made available.

It will still have the main chat available so that if you want the full screen and all the trimmings then you can still chat that way if you want. Then have the truncated comments on the menu so when somebody adds something to chat you will see it on your next page load and then can visit the full chat or respond on the menu chat.

In this way, everybody that is logged in has the chat available to them. You no longer have to seperately log into chat. I will probably have a 'logged in list' module available if you want to enable that as well so you can see who is browsing - just like in the forum but available in the menu with the chat.

    Sound good enough?

After reading this I felt motivated to mess with the chat on V2.0 so the menu portion is up and running. It should require you to be logged in to use it though. Any members over a few months old should already have an account there, if not you will have to add one in the forum. Don't worry about anything there, everything will be erased and reinputted once the building is complete.

We want a bell! We want a bell! *crowd takes up chant*

Not necessarily a bell I guess then. Maybe just the pane starts to flash when its minimized. If thats possible I guess it should do.

Well..the flash won't work well for those of us with Mozilla..so bell is my vote

You must remember, I am a minamalist. Bells and flashing stuff doesn't sit well with me. I like the common sense approach. If there is a chat 'window' available (like there is now) it should be obvious when somebody adds a comment. This site has chat as an extreme bonus, and it is nice, but it is not what the site is for. I, personally, don't want binging and flashing stuff going on around the site while I am browsing...subtlety is what I like.

    Amen!

Alternatively you could create an arcade feel and look on the whole site!

Every time Strolen says something like that, I hear Ford say, "They can have any color they want, as long as its black", or Edison complain that nobody uses records for education purposes like he designed it for, or that auto exec in the 50s who complained that rearview mirrors should be a paid option because people can just look behind them. Many a great mind may like it simple, but the rest of us mere mortals needs some help out here.

A ding upon entry is a good thing (unlike many IMs noise upon any text submission).

Such a "ding" would let someone who is sitting in the chat, who has been waiting on someone to show up for twenty or so minutes, who has been doing something else in the mean time, to know someone has entered the chat area.

What happens so often, is that someone waits in there and while doing something else someone else comes in.. says hi... waits 20 seconds (or a few minutes) and leaves. If there was an entrance "ding" such scenarios would be mostly resolved as people would know there is something to pop up their attention.

As being one of the many who has stayed in the chat for an hour or two waiting for someone to show up, a ding would be handy.

Of course it would be of limited help to me at work because I live in a world without sound cards... but it would be useful for everyone else.

    Just my two copper's worth.

Maybe Ford and Edison did so well because they resisted the 'improvements' for as long as possible.

    A ding huh?

Once the new site is up and running in a pristine condition than we can readdress this. I am having trouble enough getting that done without a ringing in my head. :)

    And that is all fine.

In case this becomes actual, one beginning might be here: http://www.theopensourcery.com/jsounds.htm Conflicting results, though.
