Two handed sword | Type: Large_Sword | Author: Michael Jotne Slayer [ Print Item ] [ Edit Post ]

A two handed sword developed for the use of foot soldiers.

The two handed sword was a weapon developed for the use of the foot soldier and is quite common in most kingdoms. The combat styles developed for the two handed sword were the particular specialty of the more developed lands.

The large pommel and long grip add leverage to the short cuts and thrusts delivered in this type of sword combat. The two handed sword was a weapon favored by the elite troops who were assigned to protecting the ensign of their units. Foot soldiers were strong advocates for the use of this type of sword, often equipping their shock troops with it.
It is massive in size but not weight. The heaviest type that is meant for combat weighs 6 or 7 pounds at most and generally the two handed swords weighs about 5 pounds. This sword is a no frills weapon with elegantly simple lines and a long and deadly reach. The 59.25 inch length covers a lot of ground. It has a stitched black leather grip.

    Magical Properties:
    None what-so-ever.

There are two advantages to the two-handed sword, each and every blow has the potential to be a killing blow. You need no defence against a dead enemy. Also, two handed swords were not intended to be used in combat against other foot soldiers. The weapon was generally intended to be used against mounted soldiers, specifically their mounts. Armor, or barding on horses is thin, when existant on the legs. A well aimed strike from a two handed sword can remove the leg of a horse, and often the leg of the rider as well, removing both from combat. Swords were made for one purpose, and one purpose only, killing men.

    Types of Two handed swords

Flamberge - A weapon of Frankish origin. This two handed sword is unique in that it has a undulating blade that in a loose sense resembles the serpentine contour of flame. It was thought that the waved blade would cause more severe wounds, though that was not the case. It remains a large and visible intimidating weapon.

Zweihander - very literally two-handed, this German sword is easily identified by the grip located 8 to 12 inches above the quillions of the sword. This was used as a hand hold, allowing the large weapon to be used in thrusting attacks and blocks like a pole arm.

Claymore - Recognized by its forward swept quillions (crossguard) this blade was created for killing English knights on horseback. It is a large, very heavy sword requiring a great deal of physical strength to use.

Great Scimitar - An uncommon weapon of the Saracen, this single edged scimitar was a much larger version of the normal scimitar. As with the claymore, this weapon was used in fighting mounted foes.

No-Dachi - A Japanese two handed sword that combines a blade equivalent to a standard katana mounted on a wooden shaft two or more feet long. The extra weight in the swing and extended grip give the weapon greater cutting and penetrating power.

JMS... one comment... while not illegal to vote for your own posts, it is "tacky".

Again... There is a difference between items and things on an equipment list. You have have listed an item that is on the equipment list of EVERY game on the market. Other than length, what does your post have to offer than the one line and possibly the image on EVERY GAMES equipment list?

Why not create an equipment list thread inside the site?
