Finally I diverge from the path of the Captain!
For Epicurus, the highest pleasure (tranquility and freedom from fear) was obtained by knowledge, friendship, and living a virtuous and temperate life. He lauded the enjoyment of simple pleasures, by which he meant abstaining from bodily desires, such as sex and appetites, verging on asceticism. He argued that when eating, one should not eat too richly, for it could lead to dissatisfaction later, such as the grim realization that one could not afford such delicacies in the future. Likewise, sex could lead to increased lust and dissatisfaction with the sexual partner. Epicurus did not articulate a broad system of social ethics that has survived.
Haha. That's the dumbest thing I 've ever read (the sex bit). -

Hmmmm... so I am a Platonistic Pythagorean Stoic of a Cynical bent, sympathising with Epicureans and Socratics, with well hidden Hedonist tendencies, and a bit Sophist-icated, too? :what:

#8I understand that people have different veiws on what "Classic Philosophy", might include. My personal opinion would be all belief systems birthed by the undisputed "Great Philosophers", from Socrates (albeit he did not infact have an established philosophy (mainly a method), never wrote a single thought down that is known of to date, and all existing information about the man comes directly from Plato-and students of his Academy), then...Descartes, Spinnoza, and even moderns such as Russel, Berkely, and Hume. But I only save this as my humble opinion, and see the term "classic" when used in philosophy to differ from the "Classic" time period. Stating this, I proclain Spinnoza to have been the most intruiging Philosopher to date. His masterpiece (and final work), "Ethics" demonstrates an intuitive grasp on extra-/intra-spectivity unparralleled in methodology and articulation predecessed, and [again in my opinion] proceeded to date. It seems to me that after the era of Descartes/Spinnoza (during the Spanish Inquisition- ironically springing the fleeing thinkers, fearing the punishment for heresy, to Amsterdam- a hub of intillectual appetite; thus furthering non-Christian belief)-> philosophers shifted into over-zealous linguists, only agruing about the meaning of words rather than the idea at hand. Of course, Philosophy is not my Major, and I can only state what I believe.... standing to be corrected. But, the only truism about philosophic debate may infact be that 'it is a debate... agreement is rare... the Truth to be revealed, is but the rarest.'-E. The Seeker -

#10I apologize Ancient, I express myself through rythmic (stream-of-consciousness) prose... if this truly is offensive to the Guild, I will stop...
I just wish to share... and I wish to share my way, and I want you to share with me, and I do in fact want nothing but you to allow me to partake in your wisdom... and present your wisdom from verse to prose, block to scribble. Any way you please. If I am not following established procedure and subsequent rules, please notify my impractice.
But for you I will attempt change in my posting style and format.
As a noob, I am sorry, and I will research more commonly used methods for the future. -

#11I hate that term. Noob. It so much more harsh than newbie. -

#12Stream of conscienceness is not offensive, just very hard to read, especially when it gets longer. A lot easier to read when separated into smaller logical chunks, thats all. In the past we have edited people's posts because all they are is one long paragraph that is nigh impossible to read.
Noob, newbie, all the same to me. Harshness doesn't matter much when it is directed at oneself anyhow but how one takes it all depends on perspective.
Stream forth Seeker, I enjoy reading your posts! -

#13BUT, Seeker, it is generally accepted, in Westernized education, that the term "classical", when applied to philosophy, refers to philosophies which we percieve as belonging to the ages of the Romans, of the Greeks. -

#16Socrates (albeit he did not infact have an established philosophy (mainly a method), never wrote a single thought down that is known of to date, and all existing information about the man comes directly from Plato-and students of his Academy),
He may have been illiterate. Reading & writing were pretty new in Socrates's time, and he supposedly saw literacy as causing the decline of trained memory & thought. -

#18Kinslayer, very interesting comment on Socrates. I thank you for bringing that forth. Of course, I meant no offense to the great thinker due to the lack of litterature written... but, admittedly, I never thought of him as being distasteful to written thoughts. An excellent theory.
My reformed opinion is that you are right. I consent that Socrates felt that true personal belief is derived directly from reflection, and questioning dialouge/arguments.
However, he must have overlooked the fact that without these confusing little lines, I would never know that he thought they sucked, let alone that he thought at all.
Or... he could have been completely omniscent to my forthcoming existence, and known that with these stupid little lines, I would abuse the opportunity to have my thoughts aticulated about his thoughts... and that-
everyone is now dumber for reading what I have to say. -

#20Perhaps Socrates realised that his greatest gift--arguing with someone until they contradict themselves--wouldn't work well on paper. Instead of him having the upper hand in a conversation, another person would be able to pick apart his arguments at their leisure.
