The Ninth Gate - fairly strange movie involving Johnny Depp and a book that apparently summons the devil.  Has a nice theme of increasing paranoia (of course, they really are out to get him...).  Draws heavily from Christian mythology, only in the sense that the evil force is the devil.  The ending didn't make a lot of sense to me, but I liked some of the symbology and the general "wtf?"-ness of the movie.  I'm sure someone could get really philosophical about it, but it's also a pretty good movie to watch just for the entertainment value.

Stargate - Woo hoo, the bargain bin rocks my world.  The movie that started the whole Stargate franchise.  Not much to say about it 'cept it's cool.

Atlantis - Thus proving that Disney really can make cool movies when they want to.  Neat mix of traditional 2-D animation and 3-D computer generated animation.  Continues the trend of Disney movies (well, the good ones anyway) being good for kids to watch, but also with more mature themes you catch later.

Bedknobs and Broomsticks - Thoroughly silly little psuedo-musical, concerning a not-very-capable British witch taking a correspondence course in magic to do her part for the war effort; set during WWII.  Angela Lansbury, cute movie but not really deep.  Good popcorn flick if you're in a sappy mood.

Se7en - Oh.  My.  God.  Really, really disturbing thriller, with one of the most imaginative serial killers in film history.  If you've seen it, you know what I mean, if you haven't, you wouldn't get it anyway.  I will say nothing more about it.

Muppet Babies - Found a couple of old tapes at McKay's.  I miss my childhood...

(Wow, looking back at that list, I've just realized that my viewing habits would probably scare people.)

Se7en, the only movie that left me stunned at the end of it. It wasn't just me.  A lot of people were just staring at the screen in disbelief.  There were people actually shrieking and sobbing at the end.

The movie scared me to the bone. it is not a kinetic "boo" kind of scare. It is a, "Oh my god! I am going back to church" kind of scare. And I don't scare easily.

Nineth Gate was interesting. Worth watching.

Stargate and Atlantis, both good films.

Atlantis has a cartoon OVA (looks like the first 4 episodes of the cartoon they aired. Still it was a great disc).

Do not get the Star Gate Unlimited Disks, nor watch them. And I like cartoons and I am telling you this.

If you like SuperHeroes:  Justice League Unlimited Disc I and II are out, III will be out this year.  There are five straight Justice Leage discs including the original episodes and their movies.

Batman Beyond. Almost nobody remembers this series. There are times I think I lived in an alternate timeline and was shifted into yours. But there it is, on my shelf  Season 1 and 2.  They totally rock combining elements of Superheroes, Cyberpunk, and good Sci-Fi, plus some of the best characterization of the Warner Hero Supers.

I've just happened across the last Babylon 5 movie (okay, two stories in one, sort of two episodes). I like the Babylon 5 universe.

    ...

    Well.

It had good special effects. :|
  4. Re: What DVDs/ Video are you watching

B5 is great. You need not appologize
  5. Re: What DVDs/ Video are you watching

    #125
I actually meant that it sucked pretty hard. It is amazing, but the old progression still seems to be in effect... every following B5 movie is worse than the one before it (and the first wasn't good to begin with).

Then again, it might be just my idealized memories. Oh, sweet Babylon 5. :)
  6. Re: What DVDs/ Video are you watching

    #126
The series was.... to darn good. Anything else will just pale in comparison as there will be no epic sweep and running plotlines.

It is a good thing so many episodes of Star Trek (OS, or heck any of them) weren't all that good. Thus even shlock still seems pretty good. At least they can get it right every other movie.

  7. Re: What DVDs/ Video are you watching

    #127
I actually thought that B5 was really good up until the Shadow War arc, when it got... really weird.  (They should have stayed away from the psuedo-religious themes.)

    I want it on DVD.

Last Night I watched  "Big Trouble in Little China".  I really love Netflix. You can see all those things you want to see... eventually.

What a coincidence.  We were just discussing its unofficial precursor, Buckaroo Bonzai, over at Uncle Bear's.
  10. Re: What DVDs/ Video are you watching

I have gotten both of those from netflix over the past 6 months or so.

Right now I am waiting for the final disk of the final episodes of The Sopranos. Don't ruin it for me, I haven't heard that the ending sucks yet. :)
  11. Re: What DVDs/ Video are you watching

    #131
I can understand why many people thought it sucked, but I thought it was kinda a perfect ending.

Let me know what you think.

The Mist - The recent remake of the Stephen King novella. The special effects were A grade, but the acting was second rank, plus the movie was precut for the insertion of commercials. Fade to black screen changes for no apparent reason at transitions in the flow. All in all, not a bad watch, but I'm glad I didnt see it in the theatres.

Cloverfield - This movie kind of remins me of Oasis, great on it's own merit, but when the film makers set out to replace Godzilla as the king of the Monsters, it was about like when the guys from Oasis said they were going to be bigger than the Beatles. Good rent, and I wish I had coughed up the dough and seen this one at the theatre. As for the bit about motion sickness, there was really only one scene that affected me any.
  13. Re: What DVDs/ Video are you watching

    #133
So Cloverfield is a monster flick then?
  14. Re: What DVDs/ Video are you watching

    #134
Yep, it a Giant Monster Stomps a City movie, this time the city is New York and rather than the traditional method of making monster movies, the entire movie is shot from the perspective of a person with a handheld camera. Kind of like what we might really see if there was a monster attack, shaking camera shots and short clips of video posted on the internet, cameraphones, that sorta thing.

I am so looking forward to Hellboy II! http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0411477/

In fact, looking at the director's upcoming movie list makes me all giddy and euphoric!

I concur AG, Del Torro is the man. Go watch Cronos!
  17. Re: What DVDs/ Video are you watching

    #137
I want to see Cronos.  I went and got The Orphanage, but I want to get someone to watch it with me since it looks all manner of freaky.

I have decided that Del Toro is pretty much incapable of NOT making a kick-ass movie.

I know he did Hellboy and Pan's Labyrinth, plus the aforementioned The Orphanage, Cronos, and Devil's Backbone (which I waaaaaaaaaant).  Am I missing a couple?

You needing company to watch a movie? Man, that must be something serious :P
  19. Re: What DVDs/ Video are you watching

Seen Babylon A.D. recently. Vin Diesel as I am used to him, the movie just left me with a "huh?". Not entirely bad, could be much better and clearer. An action movie with some perks, don't expect more.

The Lives of Others - a movie to get a feel for the former NDR (East Germany) and the workings of its meticulous secret police, very recommended. Experts say it worked even better...

    Iron Man

    5/5, HoH. 'nuff said
  21. Re: What DVDs/ Video are you watching

    #141
How would you say it stacks up against the first Spider Man movie? Better? Or around the same?
  22. Re: What DVDs/ Video are you watching

    #142
I'm not sure the comparison can be made. Both were extremely good, but both were good in their own ways. I think Spider-Man wins, simply out of classic-nostalgia, as well as the final self-sacrifice moment at the end.
  23. Re: What DVDs/ Video are you watching

    #143
Both are good, it hows the evolution of both heroes and how thet had to learn their powers rather than just automagically understand them, compare Stark learning to fly in the iron man prototype with Parker experimenting with the web slinging on the roof scene. The biggest difference between the two movies is that Stark is a multi-billionaire playboy with all of the toys who realizes that he has to do the right thing. Parker is still living at home down on his luck everyman who chooses the path of the hero after his actions indirectly lead to his uncle's death.

I liked Iron Man better because Stark isn't a whiner, whereas Spidey has a bit much angst.

Iron Man is more akin to Batman, as both have gained their 'super powers' by their own willpower, Batman's discipline compares to Iron Man's technical know-how. Spidey got bit by a spider, and at the end of the movie doesnt get the girl (even though it is by his own expressed sacrifice)

Me and the wifey are currently watching the second season of Lost (I know, we're way behind the times), and are thoroughly addicted to it. Great stuff!

    The Boondock Saints - awesome

    Revolver - wow

The Usual Suspects - Are you Keyser Söze?

Fight Club - never gets old for me

Old School - never gets old...do you see the parallels?

  26. Re: What DVDs/ Video are you watching

    #146
Strolen, I concur! Boondock Saints was awesome!

Except for that one disturbing scene. The one that makes you want to stab your own eyes with knives. Know which scene I mean? :p
  27. Re: What DVDs/ Video are you watching

    #147
Ugh. Yes. That scene is quite possibly the most horrifying thing in the world. Anyone got spare brainbleach? I'm fresh out.
  28. Re: What DVDs/ Video are you watching

    Fight Club
This movie is simply awesome. You are not your furniture, you are not your job, you are not the contents of your wallet.

    Fullmetal Alchemist: Conquerors of Shamballa
I like Fullmetal, and there is plenty of thaumatech in the State Alchemist's art. Mix in alternate timelines, nazi rocket powered airships, homunculi and all that. Not bad at all.

    Hellboy II, The Golden Army
Chock full of graphical eye candy. If you dont get an idea for a sub or six from this movie, check for lobotomy scars.

    True Blood
The HBO series deviates a good deal from the novels, and it is kinda obvious that the screenwriters of the series have heard of the World of Darkness. Still entertaining vamp series, with HBO it comes with almost gratuitous gore and a fair amount of nudity.

Currently watching the second season of Heroes. Not bad at all but there's a lot that remains a mystery, so much so that it gets a bit confusing towards the end.

P.S:Hell Boy 2 seems to be a movie that you either love or hate. A few of the local magazines gaive it some pretty good  reviews but my sister said it was the most mindless waste of time that she has ever experienced .

I thought he was HOT in Boondock Saints!!

    Some movies I saw recently:

Hancock - A great spin on a superhero theme. The transformation of Hancock from a drunken vigilante to a fully suited-up hero is a fun trip. It was a bit too silly in a couple parts, but overall very entertaining. 4/5

Batman: The Dark Knight - Not bad, not great. What probably ruined it for me was how over-hyped it was. I get excited about seeing a movie and it just doesn't live up to my expectations. But, like I said, not bad. 3.5/5

Step Brothers - No. Don't watch this movie. It's horrible, and just sick. (Not worth voting on, Do Not Bump)
  32. Re: What DVDs/ Video are you watching

    #152
I had the same expectations when I went to watch Batman, and I reacted just like you did Pieh. It was a decent movie, but the first was better and the whole Heath Ledger hype hysteria destroyed much for me. He performed well, but, well, not that well. Not well enough to live up to the hype.
  33. Re: What DVDs/ Video are you watching

Just saw it last night finally, and I have a really stupid question, that I don't feel like researching online. Why is Harvey Dent/Two-Face dead?  Isn't he supposed to come back as Two-Face now and again? :p

Also, saw the Hulk. Needless to say, it was certainly better than the first one! One major complaint...

I am supposed to believe that Tim "Tiny" Roth, all 5'5", 155 pounds of him, is a bad-ass commando? Hahahaha. Miscast!

Also, being a big fan of Abomination, I thought the monster looked dopey too.

I realize I am a bit dated with these reviews. I don't get out much anymore :p

  34. Re: What DVDs/ Video are you watching

    #154
Us 5'5", 155lb-ers can kick some butt when we need to.

I don't do many movies anymore. No time, really. I'll probably check out the live concert dvd that came with my End of Silence Deluxe Edition over Christmas Break.

    Gundam SeeD
Racial warfare between genetically modified 'Coordinators' and unaugmented humans, throw in giant mechs, hidden space ships, a hate group, and some basic anime tropes.

    Not bad, but no NGE

Awlritey then Chaosmark! We can arrange our own private fight club the next Strolencon, to test your theories! :p ;) (just kidding)

    Which reminds me of...

    Southland Tales
Now that was a weird trip. The best thing was probably the intentional miscasting of many characters, who had to play against their usual stereotypes. The plot and its intentions are still a mess for me, though there were a couple good songs and a couple good lines.

Watch it if you want something... different.

In the last few days I have been living Netflix

West World:  1972  and its age shows.  It was once a great film, now... its age is showing.  Still it was inspirational sci-fi from back in the day.

Robot Jox:  I knew it was a trash film going in.  The haze of my memory was obviously blocking out the pain involved.  The premise was great. It attempted to be Rollerball in scope and failed - critically.  OMG it was awful.  Still the FX were good, for the day.

Sometimes, you can not revisit your childhood/ teen years.

OMG Logan's Run is the next on my list.  Well, at least I know that movie is merely good from way back when.

Just watched Australia, starring Hugh Jackman and Nicole Kidman.  I had heard the reviews weren't spectacular, so I didn't have high expectations going in, but I was thoroughly impressed.  It's a real Aussie epic, reminded me of a great Western but more... Australian, I guess.  I especially enjoyed the portrayal of Aboriginal culture and mythology, it gave the whole film a sort of otherworldly, surreal layer.  I recommend it.

The most recent runs of the BBC's 1996 series  Robin Hood have graced my VCR.  They are well worth watching.

Phineas and Ferb are on my TV 6 hours a day. Help Me Mr. Wizard.

The Speed Racer movie was actually better the 3rd time around.

Thunderbirds both 1st season and the Jonathan Frakes 2004 Movie (which is much better if you have seen the original series) have been running a lot on our TV.
