The Academy?
#1This might be a sensitive subject to certain parties which I have, in the past, not been on the best of behavior towards, so I'm posting it here for discussion.
Perhaps we could have, and I'm just spitting out a vague idea here, an Academy of Roleplaying. For a new player or a player who is lacking in the skills region, or for a GM who needs practice, this could be (and I stress "could be") a huge help in learning.
As I envision it, it could be something like the Freeform boards. We set up a mock adventure or roleplay for the students (players or GMs) with "advisors" (possibly moderators, or we could elect them as a separate entity from site management) looking on to give tips and advise and steer learning along.
This just came to me as I was looking at the stars last night. Coincidence? My own idiocy? Or alien plot?! -
The Academy?
#2Check the back of your neck for implants.
If this is an initiative you want to try then go for it!
My thoughts would be a sticky or announcement thread with it. Maybe a prewritten scenerio showing how it works with the invitation of starting a newbie adventure or something.
Hey, it is your idea and it is a damn good one. Recent people that don't seem to have a clue about roleplaying, well, at least we can point them somewhere to give them an idea. Let me know what you want, and well, you are an admin, you can do it! :) -
The Academy?
#3And so I imagined the penguins during polar nights, when they can look at stars for whole days of our time, with little else to do... do they look at the stars? I think yes. What do they see? I have no clue.
We should make Captain work to become one with his penguinish inner self, to force even more ideas out of him.

We should definitely give it a try. -
The Academy?
#4Come up with a list of essay questions. If you were a GM and this happened, what would you do. And then grade them on their answers.
Do the same for players.
Issue report cards that have to be signed by their parents if the score is too low. Make them take summer GM school or write a list of Moon's GM rules with a burnt stick on a piece of homemade parchment. -

#5It is unfortunate that most of the people who need this kind of help are the kind that will not seek it.
In my role as official Voice Of Opinion...
Do we want to promote the online roleplay this way?
Do we have enough active gaming members to warrent this much effort?
Do you think anyone will stay with it long enough to really learn something?
Will not people see this as a "penalty box"? See the logic, "we make you do this because we think you are remedial or an awful gamer"? Sure some people will volunteer to do it, but most of the people who join will have received "suggestions" to go join.
Also Captain, are you sure you want to run this? These are the same people who put up the Drek you hate so much on the site? -
The Academy?
#6Well, asking those that need the skills to go to this thread will be a non-subtle reality check perhaps. The people we have to direct to this thread are probably ones we can do without so offending them should not be much of a worry, especially if they need it.
Do we want to promote it and does it warrant much effort are different sides to the scale.
I have no problem with the RPing on the site and have no problem promoting it. At the very least I think a sticky Academy thread is a great idea instead of having these newbies wandering around asking how to play.
The biggest problem I see is the same as what Moon brought up. I don't mind promoting the idea of RPing here. BUT do we want to promote the arrival of the newbs and help them out and hope they actually add something to the Citadel or not baby anybody and let those that know how to RP just do their thing?
But it is still a damn good idea, but it all depends on your intentions are for it. -
The Academy?
#7Well, I was just throwing things out there.
Moon's concerns are valid ones. The purpose of the site, after all, is not RPing.
But I really think we should try this, at least.
I'll get to work! -
The Academy?
#8'nuff said. -

#9Err...
Casting call for a munchkin Student in my example thread in the Academy.
If somebody could be so good as to play the munchkin Student, I would be much obliged. -
The Academy?
#10This sounds like a great idea, I'd be happy to play your munchkin. Set me a scenario!

The Academy?
#11Alright- watch the Academy sample thread and post when your ready.
Oh, and by the way, it's great to see you back after a sizable absence, Eph. -
The Academy?
#12Thankyou. This year has brought with it an obscene amount of work and I've only had time for a little roleplaying (including such characters as Shodai the kleptomaniac orc who died horribly after setting himself on fire in attempt to grapple with an assassin in a shallow pit, Kostya the inept Russian spy who had one too many cunning plans and, currently, Kieralhion, a mother gryphon).
I hope my first post was sufficiently munchkinny, I look forward to learning how to improve my character.
ephe!
P.S. I hope you don't get too annoyed with my grammar... ;)
