    My Name is Kevin Cook.

    I am currently the official Guiness World Record holder for the Largest Collection of Dice

    I am starting this thread as a general discussion about dice

    I can also answer questions about dice should you have any

    Those of us who played table top games use dice. Having been in gaming since the begining, I have seen a plethora of strange dice and spinners. A favorite of mine was a spool like arrangement that you spun to get random numbers. What does the strangest dice you have seen look like?

    What does the strangest dice you have seen look like?


    As I have so many dice it is hard to say which is the strangest ... I personally dont consider any to be strange ... just non mainstream

    I think that some of the ones I have designed are the most 'off the beaten path' ... then again there are some production ones that are quite odd

    Example:

    TRIAKIS TETRAHEDRAL d6

    or the

    The most mainstream will always be the Cubic Six Sided Die (see below)

    Most Role Playing Games (RPG's) or War Games use the standard polyhedral dice shown here

    Tetrahedral four sided die (d4)
    Cubic six sided die (d6)
    Octhedral eight sided die ( d8 )
    Pentagonal Deltahedra like ten sided die (d10)
    Dodecahedral twelve sided die (d12)
    Icosahedral twenty sided die (d20)

    I added several wooden dice from Germany but have yet been able to identify them

    The 'Information about Dice' section underwent a reorganization this month due to the adding of the Articles about Dice (menu became too cluttered)

    Several THEMES were updated as a result of adding new dice

    Is it me or is this self-advertisement getting a little old?

    This is on the edge of being an advertisement which, as you well know, I vehemently abhor on my site and usually ruthlessly purge immediately.

    This, however, has just enough hint of content appropriate to the site to keep me from deleting the entire thread, although I have been tempted to lock it every time there is a new post.

    Maybe I just don't get it.

    Any thoughts on this thread?

    THIS SET is probably the oldest set of plastic d20's ever made

    THIS ARTICLE (Page 9) states

    "This can be demonstrated with random combinations of the variables R, Y & B
    in Table 1.1. These single-digit numbers in the range 0-9 were generated
    by throwing twenty-faced icosahedron coloured dice (red, yellow and blue)
    with the numbers zero to nine engraved twice on each die. The dice were
    invented in the 1950/60 period by Mr Yasushi ISHIDA and patented by Tokyo-
    Shibaura Electric Company. They were marketed and distributed by the
    Japanese Standards Association for demonstrating the principles of
    statistical quality control."

    A new company ... Cave Badger is hand making custom d20's

    THESE DICE by Bear Cub Machine are the smallest metal dice I have ever seen
    ... They are in the process of making dice about 1/2 this size ... and will be able to make the claim of having made the worlds smallest dice

    Received a large donation of dice this month which filled in several holes in the collection and spawned a couple of new themes

    Via a private auction ... I completed my set of 5 of the large bakelite poker dice ... took me nearly 10 years

    As Role Players ... we use dice (unless you are playing something like Amber the diceless RPG) ...

    This thread is here to discuss any questions about dice ... should anyone have them

    Where can you acquire a certain type of die ? ...

    What is a type of die used for ?

    And so forth are the types of questions for this thread

    Also ... Monthly I publish a list of new and/or interesting dice that I have added to my inventory that month ... this allows people to see new dice as they are released

    Good question

    I am a woodworker myself and have yet to come up with an accurate method of achieving the complex angles ... I know there is a way as I have a wooden d14

    My expertise is in finish carpentry and cabinet work ... so this is a bit out of my depth ... sorry I let you down

    Anyone else out there have woodworking experience?

    Another question. I noticed a few oriental dice on your site. I especially liked the dice that had only a single number transfered into kanji. Where can I find those? I would love to have a set of dice with the 1 a kanji symbol.

    They are made by Koplow Games ... I tried GAMESTATION.NET but they dont seem to have any in stock at the moment ... Koplow does not sell retail so you have to go thru a vendor ... GAMESTATION should be able to order you some

    I am a woodworker myself and have yet to come up with an accurate method of achieving the complex angles ... I know there is a way as I have a

    My expertise is in finish carpentry and cabinet work ... so this is a bit out of my depth ... sorry I let you down



    Perhaps you haven't quite yet. Do you know how to make an even d6? I long ago read something about balancing it, but am not sure.

    D6's are easy as they only require 90 degree cuts

    If you assume uniform wood density then all that is needed is to cut accurately

    Here are some built by me over the years (see top of page for wooden dice)

    Measuring:

    When I am trying to be very accurate ... I use a beam micrometer accurate down to 1/1000th of an inch

    Otherwise I just use a t-square

    Cutting:

    I used to use a radial saw ... but I have found that both compound sliding miter and table saws to be more accurate

    I use 100# cardboard ...

    How is a bit harder ... the designs just come to me then I draw out the flattened shape ... print it out ... cut it out then assemble

    It depends on which die you are looking for ... Most of the Tobacco dice are quite rare ... all of them ... I acquired on ebay
