    http://www.rackshack.net/

Speaks for itself I think. Not sure if we are ready to jump right into it, but just to get the wheels turning.

Brought this one up because a guy in my computer class is going to a hosting business through them. Here is his site so far.

    http://www.hostrek.com

I am going to hit him up to see what he is up to exactly.

    Rackspace reseller plan:
    http://www.rackspace.com/complex/products/software/administration/plesk.php

Pro: I just did a quick look, but the prices seem better.
Con: Seem that we have to buy the space in chuncks.

I think you can chose plesk or use exim with rackshack. Something else we will have to do research on if we decide to go that route. The easiest thing would be to start as a reseller, once we know we are going to do OK with it maybe we can think of going dedicated. On rackspace and rackshack, we are it. There is no other level of support we can lean on except generic support groups.

Once we get rpgcitadel how we like it, we can port everything over to our other experiment that can be hostreky.

I couldn't figure out the pricing at rackspace and what kind of system you got with the reseller package or if that reseller package was extra for the software on top of the system. rackshack comes with Exim or Plesk.

The more I look at it, the more I like it. I know rackspace is a big seller but it is expensive compared from what I see for pretty much the same thing. Rackshack looks better and better to me.

For $35 ($25 each for set up as well) each a month we can have our own server

    60GB space
    400GB transfer

We get to make whatever size packages we want.
    Charge whatever we want.
Full root access. I can get around OK in linux, I am sure Bob is a pro and Dan is a quick learner with whatever he plays with, as we all are so.

This is what the call pushing the comfort level, and thinking more about it the more I like it. It gives just about unlimited growth. By the time we even come close to filling that space we should making hella profit. It sort of goes along with what Bob wanted to do hosting it in his garage, but gives us the bandwidth, speed, hardware support/warranty, monitoring, and a lot more for actually cheaper then what he was talking about.

Modernbill, the credit card package we were looking at fits right into exim or plesk so that is not an issue. I have grown fond of cpanel, but Exim is just as popular if just a little bit ugly but it must do the job otherwise it would be gone. Just something we would have to get used to. Users can use the modernbill interface as a front end instead of Exim if they want anyway. That package has A LOT of options.

Will start another thread with guestimated start up costs.

Rethought it. Assuming 99.00 a month rackshack I came up with these figures.

Also assuming only the $5.00 account is sold.

If we only got one signup a month then our profits would look like this at the end of one year:
    Hosting Matters: -$84.00
    Rack Shack: -$798.00

One signup a month for two years.
    Hosting Matters: +$120.00
    Rack Shack: -$876.00

If we get two signups a month the our profits would look like this at the end of one year:
    Hosting Matters: +$72.00
    Rack Shack: -$408.00

Two signups a month for two years.
    Hosting Matters: +$720.00
    Rack Shack: +$624.00

Obviously after two years our profits for the rackshack are effectively doubled and more then host matters. If we stayed with 48 accounts for hostmatters we make $76.00 a month and rackshack we make $141.00 and that number just grows farther apart as the accounts pile up obviously. After two years with only 48 signups we would be sitting pretty with both accounts, but would be sitting in a sweet position with our own server.

It is getting past the two years that will be the trouble. I don't think 48 signups in two years is being too optomistic or doomsaying. Have no idea how these things go or how lucky we would get. Might have to do some research on the reality of it. A lot to think about anyway, we would be losing money for a long time before we started making it unless we get lots of sign ups. And that doesn't include any other costs that we have and I know we will have other yearly recurring fees with the business' right? I have the spreadsheet if anybody wants it.

Just for grins. Assuming 2 signups a month for 3 years
    Hosting Matters: +$1,176.00
    Rack Shack: +$2,352.00

Just for grins. Assuming 2 signups a month for 4 years
    Hosting Matters: +$2,976.00
    Rack Shack: +$6,264.00

Read a lot of good about their reselling.

    http://www.remarkablehosting.com/hsphere_resellers.html

might be a better bet for starting out? As far as I can tell it is $4 per new account regardless of what you give them. Probably true because you are simply limited by how much space you have in your account.

    Latest and greatest:

I am really poor right now, while I pay down my credit card. This is not a cop-out; I am just sharing with you. I cannot buy trial memberships for at least a month or so.

I start my masters degree program on the 27th, so I expect to be busy. This is not a cop-out; I am just sharing with you.

I still promise to commit more time than others. This may not be the Year of Dr (YOD) but I will make time to do this (sounds familiar) I have been slacking of late trying to get taxes, IRA's, and degree program online. I am here if only in thought.

Its all good. You are all losers. I'll do it my damn self. Ungrateful son-of-a...

Just kidding. We are all busy, that is the truth, that is why it will take all three of us to get this going. Until all three of us are ready then we aren't ready. This is for fun and if it is too forced, screw it. Right now is obviously bad timing and that is cool. We can go ahead and nickel and dime it until we are ready.

Still have websites to build and other stuff to research so even if we aren't jumping straight into it, we still can do what we can in the time we have.

We ain't got nothin but time.
