What is the most obscure roleplaying you own?
#1Just for the fun of it: What is the strangest english/american roleplaying system you currently own?
Hârnmaster is my most exotic specimen, published by Columbia Games Inc, Blaine, WA. USA. -

What is the most obscure roleplaying you own?
#4I guess I am just too mainstream. I am a follower, a person with no mind of his own.
I have um, Palladium, and uh a couple versions of D&D.
Whyyyyyyyyyyyyy?
Oh yeah, I remember. I borrowed or used other people's books. And no, I kept them in darn good shape. -
What is the most obscure roleplaying you own?
#5I have, or should say "had," dozens tied for first place. As a lover of indie press / obscure games, I had devoted much of a hard-drive to them. Unfortunately, weather-related electrical problems fried that system...
However, by far the vast majority were incomplete &/or lite systems, with a few "new" games of the tweak-AD&D school.
There were a few gems, though... -
What is the most obscure roleplaying you own?
#6The End: Roleplaying in the Biblical Apocalypse is the only obsure one that I paid for. Freebies include Children of Fire, Bostonia (I think it's now called Runequest or some such), and Legendary Tales. -

#7I think it's now called Runequest or some such
Runebearer, http://www-2.cs.cmu.edu/~tpope/bostonia/
It's a very good dark fantasy game. -
What is the most obscure roleplaying you own?
#8I am just too main stream I see. Not any strange stuff, just the basic straightforward D&D stuff is what I own.
Looking at some of the other posts on this site, I am feeling more and more like hiding in the shadows.... It seems that Strolen is not to happy with my view of RPG's...
On the other hand, everybody here always says that everything should be system independant and so D&D should not be exempt.... I think.
Besides all the stuff that I have created, I do not think I own any realy rare or mentionable items.
Yours,
Ylorea -
What is the most obscure roleplaying you own?
#9I visited your site just yesterday Ylorea, and I think you have done a very good job. I wanted to tell you on the site, but didn't find a forum.
I had many, many nice hours with D&D, it was my introduction to roleplay. So play with what you have the most fun with, enjoy what makes roleplaying fun and ignore the rest.
I like your posts and hope you will come back, regardless of system ;) -
Re: What is the most obscure roleplaying you own?
#10Obscure roleplaying games....
Time Ship by Yoshinto
Morpheus 1982
Asylum 1994
HarnMaster is not obscure, just unpopular. (Great game world, merely okay game system. Could of been a great system if they had been less pretentious.) -
Re: What is the most obscure roleplaying you own?
#11What is Timeship? -
Re: What is the most obscure roleplaying you own?
#12I guess obscure is relative to the eye of the beholder. For some World of Darkness is obscure ;) -
Re: What is the most obscure roleplaying you own?
#13Obscure games from worst to ones that are actually playable ...
World of Synnibar :what:
Living Steel
Cadillacs & Dinosaurs :P
Providence :pixie:
I have some others that are so bad I don't consider them to be games ... those we will leave alone.
-
Re: What is the most obscure roleplaying you own?
#14The most obscure would have to be Runebearer/d12. The joys of the internet. -

Obscure games from worst to ones that are actually playable ...
World of Synnibar :what:
Living Steel
Cadillacs & Dinosaurs :P
Providence :pixie:
Own all, except Living Steel which was was soo bad I refused. Of the bunch, the only one really worth playing was Providence. Cadillac & Dinsoaurs is a perfect example for the "Why things from one medium is not transferable to another". Great Setting to read about, bad setting to play in.
HarnMaster is a great game that is written in a pretentious style that makes the game more difficult than it really needs to be.
For CP
Timeship
1st ed by Herbie Brennan (1982) Yaquinto (was a big dice company back in the day).
A time-travel RPG. Characters travel back in time using "Personal Energy" which limits how much they can bring with them. The system is simple and loose, to encourage wild action.
It was bad, even when compared to the RPGs of the era. You technically were playing yourself... but not really. To start the game, THE RULES STATED (roughly), "To have a darkened room with all the players sitting around a table holding hands. Light a candle in the center. Have the group chant "the travel mantra" to send yourself to these other times. "
Needless to say, for a variety of reasons, the game did not catch on.
For others:
Runebearer is not that obscure. While it is not the official game of the internet, Runebearer/ Bostonia is quite the popular game. Go Chris!
Now if you want obscure:
Tinker's Damn
1st ed by Andrew LaRoy (1997) Studio Cranium
An multigenre anime-based RPG. The system uses d20 for resolution and d6 for damage and other effects. The main rulebook (103 pages) includes several campaign settings: including police in a modern-day magic world, a space opera campaign, and friendly competition of ace pilots from all sides after WWII. -
Re: What is the most obscure roleplaying you own?
#16The most obscure book I currently have is The Wheel of Time Roleplaying Game...Decent system in a good world. Makes for a good reference in regards to comparing tWoT to other things...*chuckles*
However, I used to have Alternity (both the player's handbook and the GM's handbook), but those got lost somewhere in the great beyond a while ago and I still can't find any more copies...I believe 'tis out of print. *cries* That was a good free-form system, and my intro into the RPing world.
Oh, and if you really want obscure, I can post up my few paragraphs I have of the rules for Tyren. No, it hasn't been fleshed out all the well. ^^; -
Re: What is the most obscure roleplaying you own?
#17I collect roleplaying games. I have a lot of obscure titles. WoT is not that obscure, it is just not as popular. Alternity wasn't obscure until they dropped it from the roster.
You want obscure.... and main line published...?
Dr. Who RPG. Everyone knows there has been one. Nobody has seen one. (Actually 3 editions)
Tinker's Damm
Nineth World (still in print)
Continuum (unsure if still in print)
Worlds of Wonder
JadeClaw... nobody remembers that this one exist.
Fingeworthy (big in its day, nobody knows it now... but they are doing a d20 version soon)
Swordbearer (FGU)
En Garde
Flashing Blades
Wyrd is Bond
Timeship -
Re: What is the most obscure roleplaying you own?
#18Actually, I think the people who were originally responsible for the Dr. Who RPG have bought the rights back, and are working on an updated and expanded version called Time Lord, which was free, the last time I checked. -
Re: What is the most obscure roleplaying you own?
#19My boyfriend, the great novelist that he is, wrote an entire RPG system, plot, towns, etc. He has binders full of ideas and graphs and drawn out towns with owners and all that. It's amazing. And it makes me kinda scared. Obviously I know what he used to do on Friday nights in University ^___~ -
Re: What is the most obscure roleplaying you own?
#20I have done the same, D. So has Moon and lots of others here ;)
Obviously, if you want really obscure... Go for homebrew -
Re: What is the most obscure roleplaying you own?
#21Can I just say how much disdain I have for the term homebrew? It brings up the image of shoddy work, that our games/ work is not as good as "published" work. Midian (Kinslayer's Homebrew), Runebearers (Chris M's), and about four other homebrews that members here have made are available to the public are as good, if not better than, many "published" games. (If you have enough money, you can publish anything... so the association that printing is quality has yet to read much of the drek put out). Can we PLEASE use the word Unpublished or Personal or Indie instead?
-
Re: What is the most obscure roleplaying you own?
#22I could have sworn I replied to this ages ago.
Alright other than the home systems I have created with friends or have of friends here is a list of a few odd ones i do have.
Maztica - An extremely interesting setting but it is still AD&D 2nd Edition. It was a Forgotten Realms setting based off of the Mayan/ Aztec culture. Very informative.
Gallia - A game based off of folklore, set in a time of chivlary, high romance, etc. A lot of informaiton if you like the time period but I thought the setup was lacking.
I also have all five books of the Stargate RPG. A core book that is exceptional huge (490 pages worth), and four others to fill out damn near everything you ever wanted ot know about Stargate.
Those are my two obscure PDF's, now I also have a boxed set of Planescape. The original first printed version. I actually used those books to help navigate through the PC game Torment. -
Re: What is the most obscure roleplaying you own?
#23Melee and Wizard.
Two separate games. Nothing more than a hex grid with some cheap cardboard cutouts and a single d6. Only stats were Strength and Dexterity. Wizard added Intelligence. It was basically a combat system with no bells and whistles. I stumbled across them in about '85 or so and had a lot of fun with them. I wound up using it as my combat engine in the games I ran instead of AD&D. The simplicity of the system let us concentrate on the roleplaying aspects.
Those were good times...
Anyone else heard of Melee and Wizard? -
Re: What is the most obscure roleplaying you own?
#24Those were not roleplaying games, those were micro games... gaming beer and pretzels... what we used to do to waste time between games before Magic cards came about.
They formed the foundation for The Fantasy Trip (In the Labrynth, et al). The bones of that game formed the foundation for Gurps. -
Re: What is the most obscure roleplaying you own?
#25Yeah, The Fantasy Trip. I remember that now. Too much beer and pretzels I guess. I didn't realize Gurps was based off the same system. Did Gurps use a six die for everything? -
Re: What is the most obscure roleplaying you own?
#26Yes, Gurps uses 3d6 for every skill action. As did TFT -
Re: What is the most obscure roleplaying you own?
#27Do MUDs count? If so, The Eternal City would be mine. It's a Romanesque fantasy MUD which concentrates on combat and social interaction, but also has crafting, thieving, and political intrigue. It has the best social interaction of any MUD I've ever played, due to the extensive background of the world, and the strict enforcement of IC roleplaying. It also boasts an excellent parser system that lets you interact with the world easily.
It was big in the late 90s, but then they joined with Skotos Games and became pay-to-play. They peaked around 2000; there's been far fewer players since then. -
Re: What is the most obscure roleplaying you own?
#28Checked out The Eternal City Dozus... It seems alright, it really does! -
Re: What is the most obscure roleplaying you own?
#29While I don't personally own it, probably the most obscure game I've played, and it skirts the edges of RPG and Board game, is 'Kobolds Ate My Baby', and it's Christmas themed expansion module. -
Re: What is the most obscure roleplaying you own?
#30I have alot of these
Quest of the Ancients.. from Black Unicorn Press (no longer around)
Aliens: The Roleplaying Game
Villains and Vigilantes
Twilight 2000
Recon from Palladium
Mechwarrior (RPG for Battletech)
Warhammer Fantasy (the RPG, not the fantasy battles)
Tunnels and Trolls  very simple but great
I should go look at the bookshelf and find some more, but I am not going to. -
Re: What is the most obscure roleplaying you own?
#31Quest of the Ancients.. from Black Unicorn Press (no longer around)
Okay that is obscure and for a good reason.
Aliens: The Roleplaying Game
Okay that is obscure
Recon from Palladium
Not that obscure. It was in print until Palladium had issues.
Villains and Vigilantes, Twilight 2000, Mechwarrior (RPG for Battletech), Warhammer Fantasy (the RPG, not the fantasy battles), and Tunnels and Trolls were popular mainline games for decades. Tunnels and Trolls has a current new edition. Those are not obscure, just not well known to the D20 saturated gamers of today. -
Re: What is the most obscure roleplaying you own?
#32I used to have a copy of the incredibly popular sort-of RPG Witch Hunt. I never was sure how they expected anyone to play it. -
Re: What is the most obscure roleplaying you own?
#33Now I don't want anyone bagging on Mechwarrior. Sure the system was simplistic, but it was created as an afterthought for one Hell of a war game.
I was throwing dice to determine hits with autocannons and LRM spreads well before I had even heard of THAC0, my old group played Battletech for over two years, it was a quick and easy jump from commanding entire battalions to much smaller units with each person as a mechwarrior, rather than competing for who's company had the best combat record, who had the most losses, and who burned through the most ammo. -
Re: What is the most obscure roleplaying you own?
#34*Ahem*
Warhammer FRPG might have had a lousy system, but man... What a world building job!
Listing WFRPG as obscure is... obscure. -
Re: What is the most obscure roleplaying you own?
#35AG: The very point I was making to MindForge who posted the above list. (on the bottom of page 2) -
Re: What is the most obscure roleplaying you own?
#36A point already made then!
Happens alot around here.
