It's the American cultural invasion: more or less everyone everywhere speaks English,

    Well don't blame me!
    I didn't make the U.S. a superpower!

Internatinal Economy and the fall of imperialism made the U.S a superpower. Portugese is the most widely spoken language.

Yes, America is a superpower, but I would like to point out something, all of us speak "English" and not "American"

What I am trying to say is that it was the English, from England, who propigated the language around the world, including importing it here to the Americas. Now that America is a superpower (We inherited it from the Brits, BTW) we get the finger pointed at us for something we didnt do.

Up until WWII, America followed an Isolationist Policy, in as much as we didnt want to have anything to do with the rest of the world. We have our continent, and our neighbors (Canada and Mexico) and were quite content to let Europe tear itself apart in violent wars whilst deviding the rest of the world up into colonies.

Following WWII we Americans were catapulted into the position of economic preeminence, having had a signifigant hand in destroying the economies and infrastructures of the previous superpowers. Now that we are on top of the heap, everyone wants our help (Money) and despizes us for that fact.

Portugese is the most widely spoken language.

That just sounded wrong and spurred on by the incorrect spelling of Portuguese I found and submit the following:

    1. Chinese (Mandarin) 1,075,000,000
    2. English 514,000,000
    3. Hindustani 496,000,000
    4. Spanish 425,000,000
    5. Russian 275,000,000
    6. Arabic 256,000,000
    7. Bengali 215,000,000
    8. Portuguese 194,000,000
    9. Malay-Indonesian 176,000,000
    10. French 129,000,000

Norwegian should be on that list! Yeeessss, our Viking heritage has left the world with such marvelous words such as bag (from norse baggi). The Viking era of rape and plunder did not get any finger pointed at us though, I guess we should have been more linguistically oriented...

Yes, but it was the U.S. who made American the language of airline pilots. English is also considered a substitute, but lets be real here, the two languages really are very different these days. American is a very confusing language to be mixed with English.

Anyway, all airline pilots in the world have to understand and speak fluent American. Period. That would be thanks to the U.S. for inventing the plane in the first place , and thanks again for making it widespread (and i realize that there were some small time inventors of the plane elseware, but they didn't get anyplace with it). And by being the first major airline users anywhere, the American language was already the dominant language among airline pilots anywhere, with England (the other island) as our runner up.

Not to mention the tourist factor. If it werent for the rude American who expected everybody else to speak American, then people would just have to learn french when they went to old Pari (that would be Paris), instead of the French people learing American (which, when the fad was started, was more than acceptable to the countries who were getting all the money for small, worthless trinkets).

And then you also have to include the huge boom in american hype that has taken place throughout so many countries right after WWII. I mean, there are still tons of countries where blue jeans are the biggest thing since Michael Jackson, even today, and lets not forget "rock and roll" which has lost most of its popularity in America, but still gets Micheal Jackson his annual revenue in other parts of the world. That very boom in American culture around the world is also responsible for the large spread of the American language as well. American movies and singers flooded the Entertainment market such as Elvis Presley, or Clint Eastwood. Catch phrases like "Thank you very much", and "Hey Partner" infiltrated themselves into every man woman and child all around the world.

Now, im not saying that America did everything on its own, and certainly im not saying that the popularity of the American and English languages are entirely or even mostly based on the United States's contribution to its dispersment, but don't kid yourself, the United States of America had no small part in the popularity of the English and American language either.

P.S. by the way, I believe that Sentinel said most widely spoken, not most popular. As in: Portugese is spoken in more places than any other language

P.S.S. oh, and thanks to Ancient Gamer for permission to modify and use his Avatar picture. It really was exactly what i had been looking for.

    English
Official language in 83 countries/regions, spoken in 105 other countries.

    Portuguese
Official language in 9 countries, spoken in 34 countries.

    Spanish
Official language in 21 countries, spoken in 44 countries.

    French
Official language in 40 countries, spoken in 54 countries.

Now, perhaps in the 1500s the Portuguese may have been the most traveled spreading their language but as far as where it actually took....

Not sure why I am still kicking this horse....

Might have gone back to when I went to the World's Fair when it was in Lisbon. I went to a 5-star hotel and got food poisoning from the beef they served. I had a horrible ride home, with the typical back road toilets in Portugal and Spain being of the variety with rarely a toilet seat and even less often having toilet paper. Throwing up wasn't so much of a problem though. So I guess I might hold some leftover bitterness towards the Potuguese empire.

Ohhh.... Don't get me started on southern European toilet standards!

The worst experience ever must have been the hole in the ground in a dark chamber with no lock on the door. Let me just say that it was a busy motel and toilet trips were not a nice experience.

And speaking of strange southern european phenomenons: One time I slept on the train from Austria (lovely Austria) to Italy and an italian borderguard burst into our room and pointed his machinegun in our sleepy faces: "Getta uppa! Givva mea youra passaportas! Gooda! DON'TA TURNA OFFA DA LIGHTA!"

    *Mumble about mad Italians*

PS: I actually like Italians. Have spent many years of my childhood close to the Italian northeastern border and all. But they SHOULD invest in proper toilets.

Filthy public toilets,eh?In Singapore we have a first class transport system and massive skyscrapers, but for some reason seem incapable of having deacent toilets. This is why throughout my school years I always refused to use the toilets, even when it felt like my blader was about to blow up.

*mutters agrily about incompetant Singaporean officials that are responsible for the feaces encrusted toilet seats one can see in many parts of Singapore.

C'mon Captain. Give us a break. You know as well as anybody here that intelligent conversation rarely does cross the citadel. Most the time you guys are talking about playing some random drunken fruit in a sci-fi action thread about hairy elbows taking over the world or some such thing. I mean, it feels like i walked into a satiricle magazine while doing drugs 366 days of the year.

Oh and i would have to agree about the toilet thing. Europe does have some serious plumbing issues, But at least theyu arent throwing the contents of bedpans onto the streets anymore...mostly.

"the two languages really are very different these days."

You mean, like pants/trousers and chips/crisps? I had trouble with them when I went to Florida. Try fish and crisps. Or, rather, don't.
