    Here's one. So far as I can tell, mostly aimed at D&D, but there is a staggering amount of stuff. I think it's worth going there just to look at the random quotes at the top of the main pages.

    Web pages built with phpNuke PostNuke, whatever, have everything hidden inside a bunch of links. They do have quite a bit of stuff (I registered and posted a couple of comments as well) but it takes two clicks to get to any sort of content and in many cases once there you have to download stuff then unzip it then view it. That is a lot of work to get to something that may or may not be worth it.

    You can't just go somewhere and see what they have, you have to through link after link, go back, try another link and go back etc. to find all the content. It is just the way the preprogrammed web sites are and if they are used, you have to deal with it. That is one of the reasons I made this site. Make the information in your face and easy to view.

    I haven't had much time to dig through everything. I have not totally pushed this site out of the running in my mind, but I have to get over my personal bias and find some time to go through and see what they actually *do* have on the site.

    I'm sorry, I jumped the gun.

    I would hardly call it jumping the gun. It does have a lot of stuff on it and there are many things that could be quite useful. Just because it doesn't immediately meet my personal high standards doesn't mean it is a dud. It is still a very good resource and I will personally add it to my links list after I have reviewed a little more.

    Plus, we haven't heard what others have to say, maybe I am being overly critical (which is known to happen.) Never resist the urge to post a site I say!! Even if there is one gem useful to us personally then it was worth visiting!

    Strolen, I’d have to agree with Ria Hawk. I like this site, it does have a wealth of free downloads that are useful. I though that the site was pretty intuitive. My only negative comment is that the actual link to the file (to download) wasn’t obvious enough. I ended up wasting 725 nano-seconds (ns) looking for it, that is aproximatly 506 ns looger that should have taken.

    Said more simply, I like this site. If there was a poll, I would vote for this site. Maybe we should post a link and a poll for every submission

    I concur with the concurence. (I have visited the site quite a few times since then. Not totally convinced but majority rules ya know 8) )

    And remember. The Sacred Seal is suppose to be *hard* to get and if we just pass it out then it becomes not worth the bits that the graphic takes up. So take a hard, critical look at stuff before you give it the go ahead. Not saying that this one may not deserve it, but we have to take this seriously if we are going to be taken seriously.

    Find me some negative comments too even if the site is a shoe in, there is always something that can be improved.

    To make the Sacred Seal harder to get, why don’t we take submissions. Maybe give out the Sacred Seal Quarterly or Semi Annually. Then you could make the Coveted Sacred Seal into an annual event. Something like this, every three months we give out the Quarterly Sacred Seal Award then have a run off with those contenders every year. You could accept submissions to the 1st Quarterly Sacred Seal Award for three months, then tally up the votes and award the Quarterly award to the site. It will be worth as much as the sum of all participation. A vote will count for so much more if a site can be judged AGAINST it piers. Maybe don’t even open a poll until there are a minimum number of nominations.

    You don’t even have to give it out if the site does not meet some minimum percentage (e.g. 40% of all vote cast are for site alpha). But in the end first place is first place, so whether you give out a quarterly or not site alpha is still in the running for the annual. You don’t even have to have a timetable, maybe just leave the forum open until you get the minimum number of submissions, then open up a voting poll. Then after there are four or so minor winners you can enter them into a runoff to see who is the best of the best.

    We sort of decided in an earlier discussion to not have a time limit. We didn't want to feel forced into awarding a site if there weren't any good ones. More sort of the approach that if we find a site, whenever it is, if they are good enough and we all agree then they get the award, done deal.

    The only limit I would put on is no more then one a month. Can't let too many in too quickly and become saturated and meaningless. Once we get the actual graphic it will become more serious because then we actually have the award to give out and I think the first one will go to Hiddenway. Now THAT IS a resource no question about it.

    But are you going to have a run off of all of the minor winners? So that you only give out just a few sacred seal awards?
  11. [NOPE]DnD Resources

    #11
    Yep, run off all the minor awards.

    I don't have time to do different level classifications of websites to host a whole bunch of different awards. You know how much we got on the plate, I don't want to start something I can't finish, and anything more then an elite award is too much.

    Maybe once we get settled and everything is running how we want it we can expand, but by then I will have probably thought of another part to expand on the content portion of the site. Still waiting for Nimblefinder to get back with his insane world building idea and there is a whole list of other stuff I want to do on the site. Awards are not top of my list, but they are important enough to me that I want to do one. And that will start full steam when we get the graphic which will be any day now.

    Gaming resource links = links to roleplayingtips.com and burningvoid etc....Not much original content at all. Everything is the other person's webpage linked inside a frame which, to me and thousands others, is a BIG no no. Big Thumbs down.

    RPG Music Project / Movies / Books = I think just a way to get amazon.com associate money really. Not going to fault them for that, still an interesting idea and could be useful. Thumbs down for each seperate link that is in the main menu and not combined on another page like the real content in the file downloads. That is why I think it is more for some profit then for real use.

    Files for Download = Lots of files gotten from wizards.com, but there are a lot of other files as well. Maybe not my favorite to have to unzip them before I can view them (that is why I have a view option on almost all the netbooks I have) but if you find something useful then it is worth the trouble. I tried a few downloads and formatting was bad on a couple making them almost unreadable but lots were just fine. Thumbs up for the orignal stuff, thumbs down for the wizards.com stuff. Thumbs up for a lot of the mapping stuff and the list of programs and some other resources that others may find useful but I don't. Good resource.

    Campaing Journals - Big Thumbs up. Looks like a good idea.

    House Rules - There were some fun ideas. Wish some were explained better but that is up to the submitter. Thumbs up.

    Forum - Had some good topics going and has some regulars. Thumbs up.

    Lets see. One big down, four little downs. It still wins but it has enough downs to make me not vote for it for the Sacred Seal. The gaming article thing is a big downer for me. Don't ever put somebody elses page in your frames. There have been lawsuits over it and I know I wouldn't like it. Just not good netiquette.

    I want a site with lots of Big Thumbs up in my mind. This had the campaign journals that were lots of fun and the House rules that could get a big thumbs up if there were more and if they were more detailed. But this site just didn't give me the warm fuzzy of excitement that I should have when i find a GREAT resource. As it is I have no interest in returning to it and only do because of our conversations. It doesn't draw me.

    Sorry. I vote NO.

    It's good, but there...

    For anything good I could say about it there is always this but.

    That's why I voted NO.

    Still a good page to remember, and to add to Links.

    It is easy enough to stop other from displaying you page in their frames. It is a little JavaScript code (that I will look up and post here) which essentially checks to see if it is the parent window and if not reloads itself as the parent window (removing the others offending frames)

    Speaking of graphics. You need a Favorite Icon for Strolen. Overdue I would say. If you need an example, go to http://www.earthlink.net and add it to you favorites, once added you will see its favorite icon. Feel free to check ther code for an example, and tell them I sent you. :D

    I didn't check earthlink's but the code I use looks like this (in the meta tag area)

    It is very easy to do it and I remember you liking it on another page I did at another time, but I don't feel it is necessary for me to provide that when it shouldn't happen in the first place. That is why I removed it. It is, and should be, unneeded clutter on a web page.

    The favorite Icon is a good point. There is no special code to do it, just need the .ico file in your root and IE automatically grabs it. Got to figure one out. Will add it to the 'to do' list.

    Never saw that metatag before, that may make it idiot proof.

    Found it:

    if (top != self) {
    top.location = location
    }

    Poof no more being viewed in frames

    Oh, simple and not requiring action. Cool, will use it then. (I guess I should have realized there would be something easy like that, my aversion to java stops some of that knowledge :wink: )

    Yes JavaScript is even easier than Java.

    All praise be to Mother M$ for giving us JavaScript. There attempt to foil Suns Java may have failed utterly, but the script language still has it’s uses.

    maybe my favicon.ico didn't work becaue it wasn't just "favicon.ico" or maybe I didn't refresh after I added my sample site to my favorites.

    Hmm, I will have to experiment with the auto-add-icon thing.

    Pretty sure the name is standardized. Not sure about that little bit of script in the page.

    Actually: http://www.webdevelopersjournal.com/articles/favicon.html

    When an Explorer 5 user bookmarks your page, Explorer searches for a special icon with the name "favicon.ico". If it finds one, it replaces the default Microsoft icon with your special little icon next to your name in the favorites menu and in the location bar. The user can also put your icon on the desktop and the taskbar, though few are likely to bother.

    The icon you create has to be exactly 16 pixels by 16 pixels. There are some alternative larger sizes, but only use these if you've investigated favicon use very thoroughly. The safest route is definitely 16x16. Try to fool the browser with a larger or smaller size and it will usually ignore you. You should also stick with 16 Windows colors. Again, more colors can be used in sophisticated icons, but 16 is your safest bet.

    HOOK ME UP.. hehehe

    If we speak about cluttering pages with useless scripts :wink: you may use one for pages that post/edit posts.

    Say that that posting form is named coolForm, that big text input window we monkeys type our stuff in is named text, all what the script has to do is:

    document.coolForm.text.focus()

    Thus, as soon as the page is loaded, and you are hot to write all that cool ideas, you can do it immediately! No more useless waiting, till you navigate your mouse to that text-box and click it, this all happens automatically! Buy now!

    Ah, stupid me, made a mistake in a javascript... forgotten that text in a tiny bit of code... :oops:

    Man, for a guy who hates java/javascript, I am starting to collect it.

    That is a good idea though!!!!! And I shall implement it. I am starting to think that this should be a new thread :wink:
  25. [NOPE]DnD Resources

    #25
    I was think about how to implement it.

    There is no reason that you could not have it check to see if you (your site) is the parent window, then if not have an email sent to you, from you site, with the address of the parent window. to know what site is putting you in frames, then make itself the parent.

    I think a JavaSCRIPT cannot send e-mails, can it :?: Would have to be done otherwise...

    Besides, if some often visited page would do such a thing, I would not like to receive hundreds of e-mails (for every visitor one), nor would Strolen as I think.

    Maybe somehow through PHP, hmm... let the page reload, slightly change the url, say
    x.php?blah&blah&blah&stupid_frame=1&url_to_kill=www. ... .com

    Then let php save that url somewhere, with further limits on size and count of addresses...

    Yeah, and once you use that Script, it is out there, for everyone to see, better make it bullet-proof.

    Don't know if this would work, being no PHP-guru. May work, may not.

    Bouncing me out of frames with the one will be enough for me. I am not too worried about it since there are very few sites that actually use that anymore.

    PHP would be very easy to do as you mentioned Doc. I have emails whenever I get a 404 right now to keep track of that. Worst part is when somebodies picture on the board dissappears I get bombarded :-).

    Worth it to keep track of people trying to find secret pages and just general errors. (there are no secret pages but I think they are trying to backdoor into somewhere? Goodness knows what they could get)

    Reset the votes because they were inconclusive. A fresh look and a new vote was in order I think.
