#1I did not want to clutter your blog, so I created a reply thread here instead.
Not too sure about showing 10 recent submissions of each type, maybe a random title or something as well.
I agree with your assessment and think 10 recent submissions of each type would create a lot of "visual noise". The idea is cool, but the amount sounds too high.
********
What about showing 2-3 random (or recent) submissions of 3+ flame worth?
...But then new submissions won't show!
Ahhh, right. Perhaps a mix then? 2 random/recent quality items and the two newest?
...But what about items that get no comments and little evaluation?
Yes, perhaps there should be a random function that kept showing unrated items until someone put an effort into rating them?

#2identifying unrated items.....I like it.
I like your thoughts. I am sure once I start adding the data we can play around with the setup and what we show.
It is going to be a difficult balance on that front page now that it has turned into a sort of "portal" for the rest of the site. The main pages for each type of submission will be more like the front page that we have currently, which will give some more freedom on those pages to highlight a single type.
Will take a lot of experimenting which should actually be a lot of fun....for me anyway ;) -

#3Why can't everybody just get with the program, get opera and improve their browsing with proxomitron like normal people
IE and Opera lose big time to Firefox, amigo.

#4Well, those are just herd statistics anyway, same problem as before. That doesn't say what is better, just what is. Might not be accurate anyway since Opera allows you to set the user agent to anything with a click from Mozilla to MSIE 6.0. (which isn't unique, but it is on the toolbar so more accessible)
Mine goes through a proxy where I have user agent read
"user-agent Space Bison/0.02 (Win67; X; SK)"
just cause that is default for the Proxomitron proxy and I figure there are a couple of us out there to hopefully skew a statistic or two.

#6Your persistence has paid off Strolen. Today I scrapped Firefox and IE. (Firefox was all hype is my conclusion).
I have to be honest: Opera did not make a good first impression. The first hour it seemed counter intuitive and the layout was clogged with buttons... buttons everywhere.
Then I learnt the ropes, and discovered that it features tabbed windows (like firefox) and best of all: Full screen surfing (by right clicking the mouse).
Oh, joy. Now I am glad.
I thank thee our lord and benefactor  -

#7YEEEEAAAAHHHHHHH
And the people rejoice!! (well, 2% of them anyway)
One of my favorite features is the >> in the page taskbar or if you have a mouse with two extra buttons. On pages that are consectutive like google or the pages in the Citadel that have numbers, you can go autoforward to the next page (or backwards) by using the extra mouse buttons or clicking the >> instead of finding the correct link to go to the next page.
That amongst a million other things that you slowly realize it does.
Full screen does rock.
