The EVIL question: Banners?
#1Just feeling ya out. Just another random thought to try and get the word out a little more.
Two possibilities.
http://rpggateway.com/exchange.php
Small button type banner.
and
http://www.rpghost.com/exchange/join.shtml
Normal ad size banner.
Both of them are only for RPG sites to advertise each other and it is at the ratio 1:1, for each banner I show, then our banner is shown on another site.
Just throwing it out there. My answer a year ago would have been NO with the most !!! but now wouldn't take much to convince me if you feel like it could be useful.
I personally don't like banners and would never pay for them or take payment for advertising them. But these are more of a mutual benefit type thing and targeted at roleplayers so my guard comes down a little bit. It could be a situation where we could use them for a little bit and then dump them once we felt like we have grown enough. Or we could just get used to them and accept them. Both of them have some sort of stats checker and I can post results and we can decide if it is worth it or not. I have no idea, I don't even know how well it would work. Normal ads have like a .01% turnover rate which is insane. If this is like that, then is it worth it? Or is even one new user worth it?
I firmly believe this is our site now and wouldn't do anything without a majority of people thinking it is a good idea.
Looking for some opinions. -

#2Agar no like banners. Banners ... Baaaaaaaad.
Only if it was absoluty imperitive to the survival of stolens would I approve of banners. I see new users regestering (but not commenting, oddly) every day. The word is getting around the way things are now, without banners. If a banner meant one new user, so would just one more day. This place has become a place of solace, with tranquility from the crush of advertising to allow us to voice our thoughts and ideas with that distracting flashing "Winner" bar, or weight loss ads that take 60 seconds to load and hold up the whole page untill they get their product firmly planted on your face.
*Takes a deep breath*
Ok. Anyway, I despise ads as much as anyone, even the freindly sort that redirect like minded people to new points of interest. When we start giving awards out, people will start checking out who we are and that will be a sort a way to advertise. -
The EVIL question: Banners?
#3A moment of weakness, a lapse in judgement, a drugged wine? Who will know the motivations of the inner subconscience. The pendulum has righted itself, the inevitable swing to continue in its path. Who knows if the balance of judgement will once again tip in the wrong direction. What sane man can consistantly resist the tempting call of the siren without those faithful to help him steer straight. The trojan horse of betrayal was given thought, but not acted upon. Strength has returned to the Citadel and the insanity has passed. Peace and prosperity are once again enjoyed by all that reside there.
Other opinions are welcome but my weakness has passed. -
The EVIL question: Banners?
#4I personally don't like banners that much. I don't like to click on ads. The only exception to this is on a links page where the designer feels another site is important enough to warrant a shiny picture. But in that case, all the banners are all on the same page, and you don't have to look at them if you don't want to. -
The EVIL question: Banners?
#5Nothing against banners, 'tis just only a dead banner is a good banner.
I don't think we need thousands of visitors (boy it would be 8) ), but any good one would be nice. Have you noticed that to this moment 6 people (six) posted 95% of all posts?
If ever, only at Links or Link-to-us page. Don't spoil the home page, I think its one of the things that attracted me: NO Banners :!: -
Banners not so bad
#6Banners are fine so long as they don’t get in the way. Maybe a fixed banner/advertisement off to the right side so it can be ignored or not as the visitor wishes. I don’t mind a link to RPG sites when I am surfing other RPG sites, it says something good about a site that is willing to offer competing ideas. You have to respect a site that offers addition sources. Kind of like Santa clause in “Miracle on 34th street and that ended up benefiting the store anyway.
Just so long as it is not hostile or imposing. Small and unobtrusive banners are fine just so long as they do not try to follow me down the page when I start scrolling down. And no damn pop-ups/unders.
For instance http://www.rpgdreamersforum.com/ has done their banner exchange tastefully and yet it does not feel intrusive. (Scroll to the bottom to see them) -

#7OK, maybe banners are not SO bad. I am strongly against certain things likethat distracting flashing "Winner" bar, or weight loss ads that take 60 seconds to load and hold up the whole page untill they get their product firmly planted on your face.
But RPG-only banner may mean something.
One thing is a link to a certain page, carefully selected. Would probably require a partnership or similar connection. OR maybe a page that won our award? That would be a reason to put up a banner, even on some visible place.
Another thing is the RPG Exchange. I would say no, but my chaotic part begs: what if... what if? To give Chaos a chance (another chance, don't underestimate Chaos! ) , we could give one on some less visible place, like the bottom of the Link-to-us page. Exchange works like, for displaying THAT banner OUR banner gets displayed, if I right remember. So if you dare, just visits that page and feel that somewhere... somehow... maybe someone notices and joins us, or just has a look and enjoys it. -

#8Now that were crossing over and blurring the line between banners and good site awards, I think that possibly have a limited number of banners may prove neccesary. If somebody has to punch in the address for the site we decided to award, they might get in a negitive mindset due to the fact we don't just have a convienent banner for them to click on.
Perhaps we could set up a gallery of awards winners with when they won the award, a link to the locked discussion on why they won, and a banner to their site.
This would be a tasteful, non-intrusive and actually helpful way to implement banners.
Other than that, no banners  -
The EVIL question: Banners?
#9Ehm, quite out of order:
the Vote for us and Link to us pages in the Other submenu of the main page... point to the same place!
same true about Free Hosting and Hosted Sites...
seems too much of the good stuff... -
The EVIL question: Banners?
#10Will dump the dupe links soon. Was experimenting (and you caught me) got caught up in some personal stuff and haven't been back to try more stuff. There was just getting to be too many links in one box so I had to split it up and I was just throwing stuff up there. Maybe not the best idea.
Will definately have an "award" page. Calling "The Vault of Exellence" if I remember correctly. If they have a banner, we can put it up. Not sure how the format is going to go. Maybe run it like the toplists. Have a max of 10 banners showing, the most recent awards or something. Or just the banner of the current winner and text links and descriptions of the rest, or links to the discussion on them, or....
When I get the graphic I will start experimenting with setups and you all can help me pick  -

#11:D
See, the pull of the dark side is strong, but I am stronger.
No Banners. We gave them the smack down. My weakness is long gone and unless everybody DEMANDS them, they are not going to happen.
Slight correction, no Banner Exchange programs. I am all for a seperate page with the banners (if they have one) of the Sacred Seal award winners (Sacred Seal is getting easier and more comfortable to say isn't it?). They will have their banners displayed perhaps as mentioned above. -
The EVIL question: Banners?
#12On the topic of banners. Wife and I get sick of them often and finally decided to do something about it. I refound this little ditty
http://www.proxomitron.org/
Makes banners into nice little text links, kills popups, destroys flash ads, selectively beats down javascript, and it is free. Does tons of other stuff you just got to go through and find out.
Fully customizeable and is really cool. Oh, did I mention it was free?
