#42Back! Sorry for not posting but things have been rather bussy lately.
I will read the newest post and see if I can post. -
[Gothic Space Horror] Searching for Victims
#43ShadowEagle, Hope you get better real soon. We miss you. Get plenty of rest and drink enough fluids. I recommend Tropicana Fruit Juice Twisters mixed with a little ginger ale.

Aliens
#44Even in this future setting, aliens are an unknown. UFOs are still encountered little changed from the current, sensor blips, odd readings, luminescent craft that pull away from any persuit with ease. They also have the same level of credibility. Not many people claim to have seen UFOs as they are often attributed to computer ghosts, space isolation, or sensor errors.
Of course there are a few space superstitions.
Saturn is a Bermudas Triangle of vanished ships, most claim errant debris destroying hapless ships, but others are not so convinced.
Most of Mars is considered 'haunted' by ghosts and aliens, the equivalent of crop circles and alien anal probings. There have been a number of very popular movies of action stars defending Mars from ramaging aliens, or blasting martian ghosts and their ressurected war machines. -
[Gothic Space Horror] Searching for Victims
#45Mars haunted? *Cant help but think of the movie Ghosts of Mars* Dont you just love superstitions.
Cant wait to see where the game is going. Heck, I cant wait for the screaming to begin. -
Diamunde
#46Now, I see a lot of references to a war on Diamunde given by Luke Lavin and Jinx. The impression I got was that humans hadn't left the solar system (making a ship stranded past Uranus a big deal), so I thought that maybe Diamunde was a place on the Earth or a colony or something.
But now, Luke has said something about Diamunde's "main continent".
*dramatic pause*
WHAT?!
Clear this up for us, Scras. Am I right, and are we confined to the Solar System (As I hope; space seems so much more interesting when Man hasn't conquered it) ? Or do we have way-out colonies as Luke seems to have gathered? -
[Gothic Space Horror] Searching for Victims
#47I was under hte impression with Scars references to the Sol system that it was a cluster of three of four star systems with multiple inhabited plaents and colonies, also scars mentioned dimensional travel ships in one of his posts. -
[Gothic Space Horror] Searching for Victims
#48It looks to me, Luke, That if Mars (Which, in real life, is the next logical place of inhabitation) is thought of as a land of ghosts and superstition, then it is highly unlikely that planets outside of our immediate area are inhabited. And even if there ARE ships with interdimensional travel, By the looks of things, they are too expensive to give flights to enough civilians to inhabit a new planet.
I propose the following as a compromise: Earth is inhabited only. HOWEVER! With this interdimensional travel, people have found the planet known as Diamunde, which has oxygen and similar terrain to earth. As a result, they set up an experimental colony there to see if people could survive. Thus, there are a few hundred, perhaps thousand people in there.
The theory bieng that, if these people can survive here, then in the future, when dimensional travel ships arent so expensive, they can bring more people to inhabit the planet. -
[Gothic Space Horror] Searching for Victims
#49I would wait for Scras' final answer.
Though I am not opposed to the idea of colonies on a few planets (my own character is from the Moon), I do think that it changes the whole character of the RP if there are planets known outside our solar system. The whole basis of the horror genre, which I assumed from the name that we are in, is the unknown, and so, if Human beings know not only the far reaches of our solar system (where the Celeste is) but also other planets, it does not make sense that the Earth's government would be mystified by a ship on the far side of Uranus. We need mystery, and there is considerably less mystery in a place when you have already explored it.
As for dimensional travel- what I gathered was that the Celeste was special because it had FTL engines. Isn't that right? Or maybe I'm totally wrong? Well, whatever.
That's my two cents, anyway. -
[Gothic Space Horror] Searching for Victims
#50The I don't know about the Celeste but I know Scarasmax mention dimension travel ships. I did not think I said Diamunde was another Earth but I was using it as a way to relate to other characters with military backgrounds and develope realationships between the characters sorry if I took things a little into my own hands. I'll wait for scarasmax's answer. -
[Gothic Space Horror] Searching for Victims
#51I understand your motivations. A good idea, that. I'm not calling you on mentioning it, I'm just saying that maybe we should wait on presenting Diamunde as an out-Sol planet. -
The Official Answer
#52FTL Travel - The Celeste is not the first, nor the only ship capable of faster than light travel. There are a handful of experimental, and exploration vessels that have successful FTL drives, but there have been no habitable planets found within the current radius of operations. The current sphere of human space extends for a radius of some 10 light years from earth. This limitation is mainly because of fuel concerns. The FTL drive requires a large amount of power that the current realm of fusion reactors can only provide when running at peak output. Every known FTL ship is not much more than a small crew area built in front of a massive single fusion reactor, or several smaller reactors working in tandem, fuel storage, and a minimal ion drive.
The current generation of fusion engines convert deuterium, an isotope of hydrogen, also known as hydrogen II, into helium by the same action as the sun. The reactor produces a huge amount of power, but in doing so depletes its supply of deuterium with alarming speed. There is signifigant research devoted to overcoming this key problem, and making the habitation of extrasolar worlds a possibility when they are found. As of yet, not much progress has been made.
FTL intrasolar travel - it takes an equally large amount of fuel for a ship to cross the solar system, as ion engines use the same fuel as a fusion reactor. It has been recently discovered that it is more economical for a FTL ship to exit the solar system out to a distance of 1/2 to 3/4 of a light year, and then target a return jump to the desired destination. Thus a ship wishing to travel from Earth to Jupiter in a shorter amount of time than a bulk ion engine can provide could feasibly make a jump out of the system, reverse direction and make a return jump.
This reduces the demand for fuel, as well as allowing for surprise attacks as their is no EM or exhaust corona to betray approaching ships. It is the equivalent of having a stealth warship.
The UE and the Colonies - There are no human habitations outside of the Sol system. However, the solar system itself has become...crowded. The population of Earth hovers in the area of 15 billion people who are increasingly dependant on recycling, solar, and fusion power to maintain their way of life. The UE was formed partially as a way to consolidate power and partly as a way to conserve resources by creating planet wide standards of consumption and emisson. As much as many people hate the imperialistic and morally aloof UE, they have brought many of the planets problems back under control. The global economy has been stabilized, recycling is now mandatory by law, and population growth has been reduced from a staggering boom down to a meager .3%. This has been accomplished through regional incentive plans, punishments for excess breeding, and force sterilization for criminals, welfare recipients, and prostitutes.
The Inner Rim - the name given to the increasing belt of steel and ceramic growing around the earth, or a reference to the 19 superstations built by the UE to release pressure on population centers. Each of the superstations, clustered at the Terran Lagrange points is a habitat for as many as a quarter million people. Most of the larger stations are the property of various megacorporations, and private interests that were co-funded by the UE. As such, they generally have a better, albeit more sterile, quality of life than most Earthers. There are also a number of lesser stations that range from ultra-elite floating casinoes to squalid space debris waiting to fall out of the sky. All in all, some 12 million people live in orbit around the Earth.
The Lunar Colonies - founded largely by Asian interests, the Lunar colonies have been a huge relief on the Asian Rim. Millions of people were relocated by the various governments that predated the founding of the UE. Following the admission of China, and SE Asia, the number of people relocated to the burgeoning moon colonies increased. Each lunar colony is a subterranean sprawl of tunnels, corridors and hangers where miners are continually expanded the domain, sealing it as they go with ceram-steel. At the last census, there were an estimated 1.2 billion people living on, or in, the moon. The Lunar colonies are considered territories of the UE, and are considered under their jurisdiction and codes of law.
The Martian Colonies - The Martian colonies are generally older than the Lunar colonies, and are predominantly inhabited by settlers of Russian, Scandanavian, and Germanic descent. The colony of Diamunde is located in the southern polar region, and was settled primarily by American and Latin interests. It was during the late period of colonization that Colonel Murdoch commissioned the construction of several ballistic nuclear weapons, as well as a full regiment of main battle tanks and succedded in dominating most of the southern Hemisphere. The UE, still a fledgeling power and smarting from the brutal invasion of America was forced to respond or loose any semblance of a foothold on Mars. Murdochs forces were defeated and his war machine dismantled. Diamunde was sterilized, and the entire command system was executed as war criminals. The Martian population is currently in the vicinity of 500,000,000 and growing. Terraforming efforts have developed the atmosphere to an increased thickness, and the increase in planetary heat has caused the formation of shallow oceans on the red planet.
Mars as a Haunted Planet - Mars has gained a large amount of notoriety as there are large numbers of ghost sightings, and reports of supernatural activity on the planet. Many claim that the writings of Bradbury predicted aliens, and ghosts on Mars and that trying to tame the red planet should be abandoned. While there is no conrete evidence to support the claims, there is none to refute them, and the reports come in at a steady rate.
The Belt Colonies - founded by ore hunters, most of the Belt Colonies are fiercely independant and harbor a large grudge against the UE and their increasingly aggressive stance in space. The Belt Colonies are also capable of building and maintaining space ships, and do so. UESPA and UESN ships that wander too far into Belt territory have a bad habit of vanishing. The asteroid Ceres, home to colony P3X9, serves as the nexus of Belt politics and the central point in the belt resistance to the UE govt. The Belt has a small population, but retains a high quality of life as well as retaining large numbers of weapons. The Cateran was a Belt built ship.
The Jovian Colonies Europa, Ganymede, and Callisto are all inhabited, mostly by UE personel, but also by a large number of private interests and explorers. Most FTL research occurs in Jovian space, as well as the bulk of deuterium production. The Jovian colonies are largely neutral in solar systems affairs. -

#53Questions answered, and in very good form. -
[Gothic Space Horror] Searching for Victims
#54Alec, if you are still playing would you post a responce either to this channel, or the game itself. I dont hear anything from you in the next few days, I will assume you are not interested in playing any further and will bring in a new player if anyone is interested, or stock the empty slot with an NPC.
Thanks
Scras -
[Gothic Space Horror] Searching for Victims
#55Smaller than I thought but Perfect because of the hate of travel. It really turns what I thought of a small area into a huge expansive region. Kudos Scarasmax. -
[Gothic Space Horror] Searching for Victims
#56Hey guys, I just wanted to let you know it may be quiet on my end for a few days, with hurricane Ivan and all. My area is predicted to have coastal flooding. :( So anywho, have fun and hope to be back soon. May have to evacuate if Ivan continues northwest any further. Take care and everyone be safe. -
[Gothic Space Horror] Searching for Victims
#57Lets hope that Ivan is bluster and no substance. Dont get washed away Jinx! -
[Gothic Space Horror] Searching for Victims
#58Any hurricane with the name Ivan will be a bluster :P
Hope to see ya back soon -
[Gothic Space Horror] Searching for Victims
#59I'm worried.
:???: -
[Gothic Space Horror] Searching for Victims
#60Hey, I am back. Just wanted to let everyone know that everything is fine here. No rain, no flooding, barely any clouds. But hey, it's better to be prepared and not go anywhere then to not be prepared and have to leave. -
[Gothic Space Horror] Searching for Victims
#61And the funny thing is that there is some pretty bad flooding in Tennessee from Ivan. Crazy. -
[Gothic Space Horror] Searching for Victims
#62Alrighty, time for a few notes on equipment.
As a salvage and rescue ship, the Ballard does not have marine power armor on it, of any weight class. There are two types of suits aboard the ship. The first is a big, blocky suit with a heavy pack that contains a small set of attitude jets and manuevering thrusters. This heavy and cumbersome suit is used for EVA, or actually leaving the confines of the ship for the hard vaccuum of space. Generally only the engineers will use these, since they are the few who will actually into space to have to fix something on the ship from the outside.
The second, and the type that would be used are light pressure suits. These protect from soft vaccuums, toxic atmospheres, and extremes of heat and cold. It is somewhere between a light space suit and an ABC contamination suit. The Celeste is not ruptured, and still retains an atmosphere within the ship, so the lighter suit would be used.
The group going to the Celeste has the goals of discovering why the ship is offline, what it will take to bring it back online, and deal with either the survivors, or the bodies. -
[Gothic Space Horror] Searching for Victims
#63oops ok, guess I'll do a little cescription fixing. :P -
[Gothic Space Horror] Searching for Victims
#64Info for entrance into the Celeste
1. All lights on board are extinguished, entering the Celeste is pitch black.
2. No heaters operating, it is deadly cold aboard the ship. Breathing in the air would cause lung tissue to crystallize, and shatter, asphyziation in two or three agonizing minutes. Extremetities (fingers, toes, nose, will have already frozen in the cold.
3. No sound, nothing is running.
4. No crewmen, or signs of crewmen in the immediate vicinity. -
[Gothic Space Horror] Searching for Victims
#65Alrighty!
Special note to all crewmen aboard Tagget (Moonhunter) shuttle. Everyone knows weapons are not permited on salvage operations, and the medic has produced a military grade, as opposed to a civilian purchase, pistol. -
[Gothic Space Horror] Searching for Victims
#66Eh, mentioned ealier. But you know military folk have superstitions. -
[Gothic Space Horror] Searching for Victims
#67There is nothing wrong with having a superstition, I think it is a fun idea. Nothing wrong with using a little protection...who knows, you might need it. -
[Gothic Space Horror] Searching for Victims
#68Knowing Scrasamax, everyone should have packed a pistol or a bazooka.
 -
[Gothic Space Horror] Searching for Victims
#69Yeah! -
[Gothic Space Horror] Searching for Victims
#70Trust me, if this is a Horror game, neither guns nor bazookas will help you at all. -
[Gothic Space Horror] Searching for Victims
#71Hey at least I'll go down fighting, bloody and nasty for me! :P -
[Gothic Space Horror] Searching for Victims
#72AH, sweet temporary freedom.
Some of you may have noticed that my posting has declined in the last few days. It seems that my place of employment is trying a slave labor program on a temporary basis, and I had to work seven 12-hour shifts in a row. For me that meant literally going to work, going home, showering, eating a meal, and going to bed, with email tossed in there somewhere.
But, I wont have to do another seven days in a row for something like six weeks, so hurray!
Things have been going just too easy for all of you. Hehe
Lets kick it up a notch! -
[Gothic Space Horror] Searching for Victims
#73I am sorry to have neglected you all. I am back now and it will stay that way. But I still have so much to do that I can not contribute in a good way to you brilliant game Scrasamax. I apologize.
You may do whatever you want to my poor undeveloped Severin. -
[Gothic Space Horror] Searching for Victims
#74I am sad that you wont be playing in GSH, but I understand outside obligations and limits on personal time. Given a choice between Severin and Rhur Corell, I think I would chose Rhur Corell.
Now, lets see. GSH seems to have stopped and is in need of a good BUMP!
Anyone? -
[Gothic Space Horror] Searching for Victims
#75James Raynor, eh?
"This is Jimmy."
Somebody been playing Starcraft over there? :) -
[Gothic Space Horror] Searching for Victims
#76Seems I have fallen asleep at the helm.
It also seems that some of the players have fallen asleep as well.
::gets out a suitable Catholic school ruler and goes about rapping sleeping players on the knuckles::
CaptainPenguin...Hue is talking to you
Moon seems to have vanished...
ScorpionJinx...I know where you live.
I think Ria, Shadow, and Luke are taken care of for now. Mike isnt playing any more...hmmm.
Well, If there isnt a responce in a day or so...someones gonna DIE!
BwaHaHaHa...erm...thankyou -
[Gothic Space Horror] Searching for Victims
#77Can I make recomendations?
as to who and how. :) -
[Gothic Space Horror] Searching for Victims
#78Since Mike cannot play anymore, I have been chosen as the replacement for Private Severin Talbot.
Glad I could join you guys, this game looks great :D -
[Gothic Space Horror] Searching for Victims
#79I am gone for a while. Severin has currently taken a liking to Ao (as a friend) and will assist him in most ways. So if he is needed in any situation he will stick with Ao. -
[Gothic Space Horror] Searching for Victims
#80Sorry Scras, I havent signed on in awhile. My apologies.
