Small Encounter section
#1That other thread, ( http://www.rpgcitadel.com/guild/index.php?topic=139.0 ) I think, will continued to be accessed and added to as time goes on. Do you think it is worth having its own catagory in the main site?
Not something that will happen right away obviously, but we can mull over the idea and maybe iron out exactly how we can collect and sort them if we choose to do it. And what to do with those that are not quite 'encounters.'
We would have to be a little more picky on what goes up there though I would think. As people have mentioned there is a thin line between an encounter and a story changing encounter.
If we did do it, do we use the same catagories as the plots: city, road, water,...etc. Or can we divide it encounter based. Nature, animal, man,...etc. Or both or more.
With that section I could easily make random encounter tables for each catagory we decide on, totally random table with all of them, and for any amount that the user wants with duplicate encounters on the same chart or all different for true random all numbered with whatever dice they want to use. Would be fun to program actually.
Just a thought.
I am getting excited about being over with class and starting on my To Do list and am always looking for more to add to it  -

#2Maybe it could be done in a searchable database of encounters. Imagine how cool it would be to say "Ok, my guys are traipsing through the forest, let's drop a couple surprises on them". Something like what the items list is set up to do.
The encounters that seem to be story changing encounters seem like they would be better if they would be moved to the plots section. They'd be acting like a side plot after all.
I like the idea. A sort of mini-plot section for the diversions and little speed bumps that make the jouney fun. -

#3I likes me that idea. 'Twould be neat. And if there were some submissions that weren't quite long enough, or need to be fleshed out more, they could be moved to the ideas section. I also like the searchable database/random encounter thingy. -

#4Been thinking about this a little bit lately as I have gotten stalled on the shopping cart (ran into a problem I have to work through so needed something else to think about to freshen the mind).
Encounters of the type we want can be difficult to make appropriate. It would be very easy to over do it so there are two ways I was thinking about doing it.
1. Can make it how the articles are developed. Just leave a thread(s) open for encounters in the forums and have some admins/moderators take the ones that meet the encounter criteria and throw them in actual database as they get added. Probably wouldn't be as many submissions this way.
2. I could set up a database that exactly matches the plots setup exept it is for encounters. Then if there were an encounter that broke the encounter barrier and entered the plot range it would be a simple click of the buttom to transfer it over to the plots. There would be a group of moderators that have that power.
Just getting some ideas out there. I won't have anytime to actually work on the site till probably the middle of February. Lots of stuff going on at the moment at work and causing MANY extra hours and I can't sacrifice my schooling either..sorry. -

#5Don't forget the NPC characteristics.
They may make nice Random Generator, too :!:
Maybe, one day, there will be a whole section of Random Generators...
The Citadel just grows and grows. -

#6:D
Those were my thoughts as well.
Might seperate them into physical, emotional, action, or something so they can be used for characters. I know I like my characters to have certain defining traits that I can use and may want a certain kind and not have to go through a whole bunch of deformations if I want some kind of action trait or something. My rambling ideas. I will get around to putting this stuff eventually. Not for another week at least though unfortunately, swamped at work until the 10th.
There is a good list building though isn't there? -

#7Yeah 8)
The generators would need some search-criteria, then.
First choice might be: Gimme some! Any one of them!
Then there is the main category. Location I'd call it with Encounters. Like Woods, City, Road, all of them. Not sure how to call it with the traits, but the emotional, physical, etc are what we seek.
Perhaps some added criteria? Like Night/Day? NPC/Creature/Event/Location/... what have you. Not sure about the npc-traits either, but doesn't matter.
So when you actually start doing that, it may be enough to use one search criterium, for the beginning. The others will be probably less used eitherway. -

#8Started on it today. Built the database with basically
Encounter description
Encounter setting (same options as the plots BUT will allow it to fit into multiple catagories or simply pick all. Some encounters can be useful everywhere, some can be useful on the road, forrest, cave, and others good in different places. So will allow the person to check the box of where the encounter will fit)
Encounter complexity (Agar's suggestoin: two settings. simple, complex. Simple being something that will not keep the characters too long or something that is not story changing. Complex that may throw a snag or two in the current adventure.)
I personally like the simple ones, but there are going to be encounters that have wider ranging effects perhaps and the complex option will be available. Will be interesting to do that. May need admins to keep track and make sure appropriate catagories are chosen....
The search or radomize options will be a little more complex then the normal searches. Will have a check box for every setting and basically allow them to choose a different one for each. With each check will add an OR statement so they can be as specific or generic as they wish.
Randomize option. I plan on having the user choose the amounts of encounters they want, like a random chart of 10 or 100, whatever, then they need to choose what scale of die rolls they want as well. So say I want 10 different encounters and I want it rolled on a 1d20, then the random chart should appropriately assign 2 numbers per encounter. Same for 10 encounters and wanting to roll a percentage (1d100, 2d10) whatever and each encounter will get assigned 10 numbers.
Can choose with or without the numbers as well I guess, or just simply view a catagory. Hopefully will have quite a few options.
Any other ideas, changes??? -

#9PS. I already compiled the encounters thread and will input all those by my lonesome. Once in there feel free to edit them if I did something innappropriate.
For the author, I plan on just appending the author's name to the end of each encounter. Good enough? -

#10i was trying to vote but the poll only display the the current votes ando dont let me vote  -

#11The database shows you already voted, but since it hurts nothing, I deleted your vote and you can vote again. -

#13I'm not sure I like it. It's like a combination of plots and ideas, but lacking the usefulness of either. -

#14How do you mean?
The point of them is to be able to print a small list of random encounters that you can throw into your campaign during the normal and boring 'traveling' when you expect something little distraction.
Don't these type of things fit that bill or are you looking for something different? -
Small Encounter section
#15Hmmm....Well, I dunno. I guess I just couldn't figure out what to use them for. -

#16I think I see what you mean though. With plots and ideas it seems like everything should be covered. We had that great thread about random encounters though and this sounded like a great idea.
Ideas are more generic and all encompassesing and may not be useful to everybody. There may be a couple encounters in there but for the most part are just random inspirations.
Encounters are to just to add flavor and depth without derailing anything the DM may already have going. Hence the separation of the simple and complex. Random fights are good, but random events are more colorful and draw you into the game more and that was the overall hope of this. Spice up the game a little bit with some more interesting encounters then a band of goblins, from the simple horse tripping in the rain to a meeting a woodland spirit. Simple small stuff that could be fun and take the players out of the ordinary "you travel for 3 days, nothing happens." Now you can spend a few minutes on each day and keep the players wondering. "Was that important?" or saying "That was cool." or swearing "Damn, I can't believe that happened."
Hopefully the encounters will become a little more useful once I get the charts on line. Still trying to figure out a couple ways to randomize them to make them more useful.
