    Aaargh!

I wanted to comment it, but I am unable. From the fist-sized gem, to the whole mafia being after the heroes... I hate it.

The usual time-limit, the usual result.

Hand of the Asp | Setting: Other | Class: Any | Author: Alec_Shadowkin [ Print Plot ] [ Edit Post ]

The characters do their job and help an innocent in need. Little do they know what they're getting themselves into....

The players are doing the typical shopping/town visit when they see a man lurch backward from an alleyway. He falls to the ground with a dagger in his chest, followed by a pair of men in dark cloaks. As the players run to help, one of the two atackers take something from the injured man. Assuming the players stop the two men and save their victim, they retrieve the item from the attackers and give it back to the man it was stolen from. He says its a family heirloom, valuable, but not neccessarily magical or anything(when I ran this I made it a fist-sized purple gem with inscriptions carved into it). The players also find strange tattoos on the attackers forearms. The players get him to an inn and spend the night.

The next morning they get up to find the town sheriff/constable/whathaveyou in the man's room. At some point during the night he was murdered, his throat slit. If the players search the room they'll find that the purple gem(or whatever)is gone. Since there are no leads, the players simply leave to do whatever they wish.

A few days later they are attacked during the night by a number of dark cloaked men with the same strange tattoos(I had the attackers use poisoned arrows(a sleeping poison) on the player(s) on watch). Assuming they will want to find out who this is and how to stop them, the trail can send them all over looking for information about the tattooed assailants. It turns out the group is after them as punishment for messing up the theft attempt, sort of an object lesson, if you will. How you play this out beyond this point is up to you.

**Personal note: I had the assassins be members of the mafia(The Hand of the Asp, check the Terescence: Organizations thread in the Setting Forge), and the players have spent a full 6 months finding out information about this group and where they were based. They tracked the group to a specific city, but were shortly afterward escorted out of the city by the Guard, on charges of theft(which they were framed with). Now they are trying to find a way back into the city to confront the leaders of this mafia, since they are now exiled from one of the largest cities on the continent. It's been an amusing time(for me at least).
