warning - Threat of splitting a new thread
#1So if we embrace the concept of LIST/ Caches (Threads where we post good ideas for a given topic) and Ideas (Single concepts we are working on and improving), perhaps a change to the idea area structure?
To be honest, I had been toying with this idea for a while. Caches/ Ideas make a good division. It is more elegant than the division I had been working on (but similar enough to be scary... my rules for the division were complicated...)
Suggested new Divisions
Idea Works
Working It: A place where we will put ideas, or single ideas to be worked upon. This could be for places, events, scenarios, future articles, etc. (Some of these should be made settings/ items on their own)
Idea Farm: A place where we will put caches/ lists. Need one, Have one, etc... (We will be scooping ideas from this back and forth for a while.)
Querry: Should the Rumors section just be shuffled into this area? Or should it be its own thing? If it is, the Rumor section can be put between the idea farm and the setting forge
Setting Forge: This is the place where we put settings and ideas for settings that you want to work on.
Articles/ Essays/ Groups of Tips: Strong Single Posts, or condensed versions from working it.
Settings
Kerren, 6th World, Etc... Note this should be setting, as some game worlds are nor actually worlds, they can be universes/ multiverses/ or just cities. Settings is just the Setting Forge on Steroids.
Note the change in order. This makes more sense, as the ideas/ information gets more complex/ complete as you go down the page. (Personally I would put free form gaming below the settings area, but that is just me).
I really hate the word homebrew... it is a hold over from the early days of aD&D. It cheapens the effort of people who design worlds. It implies that your world, because it is not "official" or "published", is not as "worthy" or as "good" as those that are. This phrase made us slaves to published settings for a decade or so. We all know that home made worlds are just as good, if not better than most official settings. Time to throw off those shackles. And might as well lose it for the ideas section as well. -

#2AWESOME!!!!
Give me through this weekend and I will heavily comment on this idea. -
New Forum Reorganization
#3By the way, I like Homebrew because it exactly implies something not official and because of that it is going to be unique and personal.
But it is just semantics and I see your point and with an overhaul (Setting Forge is cool) the word probably won't stick. -

#4We are the Idea Guild. (everyone chant with me...)
That was what I was thinking about. Shall we split it, as will be necessary sooner or later, and in what way?
And it seems you have answered my questions before I could ask them, MoonHunter! Great titles of the sections. Cache feels to be a much better name than a list, anyway.
The Citadel will get another change with its rebuild...
Note: Strenghtening the Idea Guild theme may weaken the tendencies of some more conflict-oriented members (clans etc.), which I find somewhat unfitting... -
New Forum Reorganization
#5Suggested radical changes of the forums:
General/ Main Citadel
- News and Announcements
- Ideas, Suggestions, Bug Reports
- Greetings Travellers
Idea Works
...as described by MoonHunter, with Rumours
Settings
...
(secret Citadel Guildmembers ;) )
- maybe a archive for the deleted bad posts? There start to be quite many...
Extraneous Voices of Picayune
- Citadel Tavern
- Cavern of Inane Natter
After debate with MoonHunter, extra category for the online players:
Roleplaying (how about some other name?)
- Starters (giving an idea of the world and the first character, "advertising" for ones thread, after/if players are attracted, play will be done below, may serve later for some OOC)
- Freeform Roleplaying (also Moderated Games)
- Archive (all old threads will move here, deleting some small and uninteresting threads, the dead ones here to await rebirth, or simply to show to the public)
- Labyrinth
Thus there will be always only a handful of threads that are really used. Start in Starter thread, play in Freeform, a dead thread goes to the Archive. The Labyrinth is extra.
What do you think? Flames expected. -
New Forum Reorganization
#6I think that sounds like a sound plan. Just one question: since its incarnation I've never been quite sure of the purpose of the Cavern of Inane Natter. We already have the Citadel Tavern, the lines of conversation aren't massively different between the two, so why have two areas dedicated to the same thing? Might we not be better merging the two into one?
The Labyrinth section fell into disuse because it was too big a project: it would have required too much time to write a dungeon for people to play in a tournament (which was the original idea). Maybe we'd be better having another forum area in the Idea Works for game mechanics threads where I could post the ideas behind the system I was developing, Manfred could post his K10 system and all other discussion about system designs could be placed. Then we could do away with the Labyrinth section altogether.

New Forum Reorganization
#7I've been neglecting to post on this topic as I've been busier than is healthy. Anyhow, I think this idea is a good one, however it is worked. Ideas has fallen into being quite stagnant, so any change will bring attention to it.

New Forum Reorganization
#8Will probably have a few responses as I review the ideas and get my own. First, a few comments.
Organizationalwise I think I want to have the most interesting threads at the top for the obvious reason of if somebody visits, I want to generate interest without forcing them to go through the entire list of forums.
That is one of the reasons I don't have the bug reports at the top under the general (where it used to be) because that is just wasted real estate for a first impression. Announcements, I think, may not need to be at the top just because they are announcements but the welcome thread should be up there and if that is there then announcements may as well be there too.
The reason I made the extraneous voices forum is because I don't want the Greetings Traveler forum to become all that BS that happens in the general chat area. I want the welcome are to be just what it is without all the extra goofy chat threads contaminating it. And a site needs the annoying chat area, I want the annoying chat area for that matter. People sometimes talk about nothing and if there isn't a place for it it will bleed into areas I don't want it to be. So it is easier and better to have a place where people can do whatever (even if we don't understand why) then sacrificing other threads to the nonsense. Thre reason there is the Tavern and the Cavern is so the Cavern can be the totally nonsensical stupid chat that I previously mentioned while the Tavern is topic orientated chat where each thread, although not Idea Guild important is nonetheless directed towards a set topic.
The Welcome would fit in the Inane natter but then I prefered it at the top, but that may change. I haven't looked to deep at the reorganization yet but I will post as soon as I do. -
Suggestion
#9Idea Guild
- Articles, Essays, Grouped Tips: Need a description, lost my wit.
- Idea Scroll: Cache of ideas that can lend themselves to be expanded upon. Example: Odd characters, side-jobs for players, favorite traps etc.
- Setting Forge: Going to assume this is for those just creating or aspiring for their own "Settings" forum.
- Flesh it Out: Have a good idea but stuck on the details? Backed into a creative corner and need some help escaping? Half ideas and incomplete thoughts welcome!
- Myths and Rumors of the Lands: Myths and Rumors, our lands are full of them. Some are born of fact, some of the unknown, some of fear. They are whispered of in bars and spoken of in stories and so the myths and rumors continue to grow. Share your lands overheard tavern talk and your legends, whether sung or whispered.
- Query: Not sure what this would be for. Would be happy to collapse Rumors wherever, they are sort of floating in limbo right now as it is
General
- News and Announcements: Web site updates and general announcements.
- Greetings Traveler: Step inside the Citadel and introduce yourself. Not sure how to start or where to go? Post an intro and let us make you feel at home. For chat, join a thread under the Extraneous Voices of Picayune.
- Ideas, Suggestions, Bug Reports: Got an idea for the site? Something non-intuitive or annoying? Find something not working? Let me know of anything you come across that you think could improve or fix the site. I love new ideas and hate broken stuff!
Settings
- Antasia
- Deadspace
- Land of Aros
- World of Kerren
- The Sixth World
Roleplaying subject to change
- Freeform Roleplaying: Join a thread or start your own. Just for fun roleplaying with no rules and no limits. Play off each other with interactive roleplaying. (Registered Users Only )
- OOC, Starters and Questions: Out of Character discussion, Game starting requests and ideas, role playing questions.
- Archive: Games that have gone by the wayside and are currently in limbo
- Labyrinth: Every year, crowds flock to the Citadel to see the Trial. They amass in their thousands in the stadium, their hoots and cheers like the calls of excited birds, the sand on the ground shivering with the reverberation of their stamping. It's been like this for a century. Ever since the labyrinth was conceived, people have wanted the challenge of coming out alive.
Citadel Guildmembers
- Administrators: For the Chosen Ones to discuss Citadel business.
- Submissions Discussion and Archive: Deleted submissions and submission discussion.
- Sacred Seal discussion: Nominate, review, vote, and discuss sites deemed worthy enough for the Sacred Seal.
Extraneous Voices of Picayune
Citadel Tavern: General discussion in a topic orientated style. Come in, ask a question, start an argument, join a conversation, we don't care as long as you join us.
Cavern of Inane Natter: Enigmatic echoes, phrases of unclarity, and recondite conversations of inconsequentiality. Speak as you will, of what you will, when you will, if you have the will. -

#18I like the change, and will go and work on 6th world some more. Going to be a little busier later on, as I have to fix the half dozen wires in my kiln that shorted out. But hey, my shop is still standing! :D -
Oky
#19I am back and typing slowly. I am also thinking more clearly,
Most of what I was commenting on has been implimented in my absence.
But...
In roleplaying, could we put the (starts, OOC stuff, and FAQs) on the top of that listing. That way people will see the rules first, then move on to the rest of the rp area. We should also put any "articles" on RP in a forum setting in there as well.
If okay with people, I am going to shift a few files about in the idea area to better reflect the new division. If you see something out of place, feel free to shift it back. I am going to do this slowly over the next couple of days.
