Durith Longshot?
#1Durith Longshot | Elf...? Human...? | Rogue | Sharpshooter/Assassin | Male | Author: Shadoweagle [ Print NPC ] [ Edit Post ]
An almost cliché ranger. Silent, brooding. Perhaps due to a troubled past...?
Appearance
Who is this man, sitting alone in the back of the tavern; wandering aimlessly through the forests; crouched on the edge of the roof of that tower? So silent. So alone. His eyes, pinched at the sides, seem to hold torment within them. He would seem to have very little regard for his own life, perhaps even just awaiting the day it ends.
His lips seem rarely to smile, and what faint smile he may give could seem even more unhappy than his usual frown. Obviously a man with a past. But what past? He seems not to tell anyone about himself. Even a name is exceedingly difficult to get from him, though if one were to learn it, it would certainly show he feels a great bond of trust to the one he confided it to. Perhaps he has made some wrong choices in life, which forced him to end up here. Either way, he is here.
--- This mans attire may give a hint as to what he is, or used to be - A plain leather vest is worn over his torso, a light armour which would decrease the effectiveness of some mortal blows, but still give him plenty of manoeuverability. A plain, light brown scarf hangs along his neck, perhaps for the same reason as the vest, and a cape, various colours of forest green and brown flows from his back to help blend in. Occasionally, though not always, he wears a helmet, the metal that was, perhaps, once a shining golden, and is now dimmed and faded. Leather leggings flow down to padded boots, allowing almost completely silent movements, and warmth. His right hand and forearm is covered with a lengthy, leather glove, and his left his holds only a bow-glove, his index to ring finger covered by the thick leather of this glove, so his bow-string does not chafe and cut into his fingers. Of course, this glove offers minimal protection, but allows his hand to move much more quickly and accurately.
Apon his back rests a quiver of arrows, basic, fletched ends pointing upward, and another quiver lies apon his hip, the faded green feathers apon the end, and smooth, polished wood indicating they are far better quality than the ones on his back. One of these quivers is for use when facing many foes, whereas the other, obviously will be used when the shots count.
The only other weapon he holds, is a simple hunting dagger, six inch blade, well cared for and sharpened connected to a basic hilt. Seems this is his defence for when the enemy is too close for his bow to be effective. his longbow, well worn, though of the highest quality, is rarely seen without him, as he either hangs it on his back, has it in his hand, or has it nearby. He knows no magic, and has no no 'special qualities' as such, but excels at his bowmanship and stealth.
This man has lengthy, dark hair falling down about shoulder length, and his lean facial features are average. He isnt overly 'handsome', though he is by no means 'ugly', either. Simply, average. It is a debated issue whether this man is an elf or not. His slightly pointed ears could belong to either human or elf, as with his lean form. This man, however, will offer no clue to wave the debate one way or the other.

Background
As with most tragic characters, this mans parents, nay, whole family had been slaughtered when he was merely seven years old. Killed by raiders during a caravan raid whilst they were travelling and, since Durith had the wit to hide, he was the sole survivor. torn with rage and depression, the boy, once a cheerful child, full of joy and kindness, drew into brooding silence, sometimes going weeks without words. Half a year after this incident, the child picked up his first bow - having stolen it from a drunken, sleeping archer one night. Of course, the string was far too tight for him to pull back properly at his current state, and he had no arrows to work with. This was no problem, though, as he practiced perhaps four hours every day to hone his muscles with the weapon, and he crafted his own arrows using a small dagger. Within two years time, at the age of nine, he was able to notch an arrow, draw back and shoot accurately at the range of eighty feet, without much difficulty. By the age of nineteen, he could draw, shoot and have another arrow already drawn in his weapon in two seconds. And that was shooting accurately at 200 feet. Quite an accomplishment.
A soldier in the army of Duriths country witnessed the spectical of this mans bowmanship, and quickly got to know him, suggesting to the man to become an archer for their legion. Duriths skill allowed him to rapidly rise the ranks, and, by the age of twenty-five, he was commander, in lead of the entire army and leading them to many tactical victories, even when odds were far greater. The mans unfaltering honour and skill caused him to become extremely famous - a name known throughout all the lands as one of the greatest archers in all of history. He was even beginning to become the same, cheerful talkative boy that he was in youth. Until.
Until, during one critical battle against a difficult opposing army. The commander of the opposing side pursuaded Durith to meet with him and converse about the battle in secret.
The next day, in the midst of battle, Durith betrayed his own allies, his own friends, ordering them to charge forth into a trap laid by the enemy. They were consequently slaughtered, and minutes after, Durith had disappeared, fleeing into the forest. Why had he betrayed? Not even he knew, for the night he saw the opposing commander was a complete blank. Did they pursuade him with bountiful funds? A position of wealth and fame in their country? Durith was far to proud to accept such things. Perhaps they used foul sorcery to warp his mind...?
Either way, Durith now Lived the ensuing years of his life in complete solitude, his mind torn into near-insanity by the regret of his betrayal. He became even more withdrawn than before, only emerging from the forests when needed. He kept the armour and weapon provided by his commander status in that army, using them now only to hunt. Now, at the age of twenty-nine, he emerges occasionally from the forests to take on quests, once again putting his skills in use for the betterment of others. He rarely shares his name, though, as due to his betrayal, he would still have a large bounty on him. And though his appearance may have altered due to his years in the wild, who he is, hasn't.
Notes
A player/NPC may recognise Duriths name if he were to confide it to him/her, as it is supposed to be a very famous name. This could provide a slight quirk apon the RP, as taht Player/NPC might be greedy and attempt to bring the man in for the bounty his name holds.

Boring.
Sorry, there, pal. That's all I can say.
I don't find anything particularly interesting about it.
It does show talent, though. Keep at it, Shadow!

Did he have to be an orphan? That is so cliche it hurts.
Did he have to be a dark and brooding character of mystery? That is also so cliche it hurts.
Did he have to be... well you get the idea....
Well written, beautifully done, but the character is pretty darn painful. Doesn't your gameboard have rules against these cliches?

Lol no gameboard ^_^ And I warned about the 'cliche' aspect :P Completely freeform roleplaying where i first made this charry for. I didnt actually have a past made up until I wrote this just now. I could change it, but im not going to. At least not anywhere in the near future.
I am really not sure what to do about this... -
