  19. Formourian names (courtesy of the nameless ghoul)

    #19
By far the most common names in Formour are those mentioned in the "Book of the Cannon," either real historic personages, or those character names mentioned in parable stories. The top 12 lists of Formourian name (in alphabetical order):

    Girls
    Anna
    Becca (or Rebecca)
    Beth (or Bethany, or Elspeth)
    Denise
    Erin
    Jennifer
    Lana
    Laura
    Lisa
    Michele
    Rene
    Susanna

    Boys
    Aaron
    Duncan
    Erik
    Gregory
    Jonathan (or John)
    Michael
    Pol (or Paul)
    Powel
    Roy
    Ryan
    Samuel
    Terrence

The above list is common even among non-members of the Temple of Light, and holds true for both ethnic Formourians, and non-ethnic Formourians living in the Kingdom. That is, a Dwarf living in Formour is just as likely to use one of the common names as a traditional Dwarvish name. Likewise, someone of Formourian ancestry living in the Byzant Empire is as likely to use one of the above, as a name more common in that land. Other names are possible, but far less common. That is, if there are 50 "Duncan's" in a city, there may be only one or two "Daniel's."

Formourians are also frequently named after a relative, further increasing the commonality of the above listed names. Unlile their Heldannic neighbours to the north, Formourians see no problem with naming their children after a living relative.

Last names are not universal, especially in the northern and western areas. There are three conventions that are used for last names.

    1. Occupation: Cooper, Gardener, Smith, Wainright
    2. Location: of Argent (or without the preposition), Dalesman, Highlander, Overcreek, Wood
    3. Generational: Taking the name of your father

There is no real scheme to which of these conventions one will take, it seems to be whichever is most convenient. That is, if there is more than one smith named Lisa in an area, one will come to be known as Lisa of Daggerwood (where she grew up), and the other Lisa Farmer (from her father's occupation). The more famous (or infamous) the father or family, the more likely someone will be known by a Generational name. Certain aristocratic (non-noble) families use the Generational scheme exclusively. Nobles on the other hand, rarely use last names as their station helps ensure that there aren't too many "Duke Pol's" in an area.

Generally, people get used to certain last names, for themselves and others. Thus, names are usually kept for a lifetime. For example, Aaron the carpenter decides to move away from the city & take up farming. He will most likely still be known as Aaron Carpenter rather than Aaron Farmer or Aaron of Boulderton.
  20. Elven names (courtesy of the nameless ghoul)

    #20
The conventions for Elven names are quite simple. The parents choose one that they think sounds good. Generally, this means lots of vowels and the occassional complex sound formations. Knowing an Elf's name gives no clue as to gender. Names are carefully chosen, as not only must they service for the decades-long childhood, but must also work well for the adult Elf for all eternity. It is rare for an Elf to be named after someone--this is a practical decision to avoid future confusion--but may select similarly sounding names, either to honour another, or more often because the parents liked the sound of the name, and were inspired by it.

    Some Elven names include:
    Abiannie
    Aerlyn
    Anarand
    Annederia
    Aurialla
    Baeteriel
    Beraendar
    Boelaraen

    Eäràng
    Eärél
    Eärumir
    Elaeclya
    Elendar
    Eloawribtee
    Elrorfiril
    Elrülad
    Elvadriewen
    Elvyriand
    Eoloanna
    Eowálas
    Gavaver
    Glorfing
    Gwynieth
    Haledeclya
    Javamaentariel
    Javena
    Jennabriddlaen
    Kurayesh
    Ledendra
    Legàmbor

    Sólindë
    Sündir
    Sylas
    Tadrierion
    Talanaberiel
    Taloriel
    Throril
    Tinöviel
    Tinür
    Valamamario
    Wylalaenna
    Wylereldar
    Wylobaver
    Xaphoniel

Last names are typically taken only when an Elf belongs a noble family or to a Great House, the basic building block of Elven society. The lack of traditional Elven names and their longevity render last names nearly useless other than denoting political affiliation. Some Elves have adopted artificial last names while in foreign lands. That is, one may meet a Taelyn Stormmeadow who is visiting Formour, but he is not the child of Mr. & Mrs. Stormmeadow. Note that there is a subtle distinction between being a family member of that House, and being a subservient member. That is, the child of the Lord and Lady of House Driilani may be known as Allaendale Driilani, but her non-noble playmate would be Druein of Driilani (optionally called Druein of House Driilani).
  21. Goblin & Hobgoblin names (courtesy of the nameless ghoul

    #21
Goblins' & Hobgoblins' names are traditionally formed as composites of their parents names (if known). For example, The children of Vrugrash and Kathella are: Vrugla, Kathrash, Rashell, and Kathagvru. Last names are not used, nor needed with this naming scheme. While travelling abroad, a Hobgoblin may be known by his or her tribe, but normally everyone that he or she deals with daily is part of that tribe. Additionally, all other Hobgoblins will recognize the colour of the trophy sash and kilt, which will tell what tribe to which one belongs.

Parents want their children to have names that are unique, reflect well upon themselves, and will serve the child well during all of his or her life. New elements of names are very rare among Goblins, but only rather uncommon among Hobgoblins, given the latter's more rapid reproduction rate. Thus in the above example, if Vrugrash and Kathella couldn't think of any more variants on the combination of their names, the next child may be named Kathezzru.

There aren't official male or female names or naming schemes. However, when deciding on how to mix the names, a boy will get a harsher sounding name, whereas a girl will be given a somewhat softer name. This is purely perceptive and subjective. Many a fight among youths started over a comment like, "'Chattex,' that's a girl's name."

Some Goblin and Hobgoblin names include:
    Banak
    Bigar
    Bugdish
    Eradush
    Eragor
    Eridush
    Erirk
    Erugdush
    Erunk
    Gagar
    Gogdush
    Grugdush
    Grurbag
    Gugdish
    Hodash
    Hoshnak

    Rigor
    Rogdush
    Rudish
    Rulo
    Tannetha
    Tellush
    Tyrel
    Vanak
    Vidash
    Vriurk
    Vrugdush
  22. Troll names (courtesy of the nameless ghoul)

    #22
Troll names are remarked by non-Trolls as being profoundly unimaginative. Single syllables are quite common, often sounding almost like a grunt. Trolls may be named after a parent, an object, even another child--having 5 Trogg's in one household is certainly possible. Those Trolls who live on the fringes of another culture may name their children names inspired by those around them. That is, Formourian Trolls may have names truncated from Formourian Humans, such as: Bek, Kael, Nise, or Ter. Trolls do not associate names with certain genders, so a male Troll may be named Bek or Nise.

Last names are not traditionally used, but may be adopted according to the mores of nearby cultures. Thus one may meet a Calli Stonethrower while in Formour.

There is however, a certain subtlety to Trollish naming, that only a Troll can seem to see the inherent logic and value within. To a Troll, there is only one name that can be picked at a given time--this may change as the baby Troll changes, but only Mott (for example) is right, right now.

    Some Troll names include:
    Althor
    Barg
    Birg
    Bolg
    Bulg
    Grang
    Grark
    Grourk
    Grugg
    Gruk
    Gruk
    Gurk
    Haol
    Hok
    Horg
    Kanton
    Keteel
    Klal
    Kresh
    Parg
    Pralg
    Pruk
    Rok
    Rok
    Voshnak
    Vrush
    Vurg

Trolls also frequently use nicknames. This is as common among each other as it is for a Troll to gain a nickname from a non-Troll, and this helps keep heads from being smashed because no one seems able to master the complexities of a one-syllable name. A nickname to a Troll is viewed much like a common rainment--being called "Crunch" is just like wearing his blue cloak in bad weather, with neither greater or lesser emotional attachment to either name or cloak.
  23. Ghoul names (courtesy of the nameless ghoul... no relation)

    #23
Ghoul names are rather similar to modern. That is, family names are common and varied, there is a large variety of first names, middle names are common, and variations in spelling and pronunciation are accepted. Ghouls do not generally name their children after living relatives, however, and naming your baby after yourself is an act of unforgivable vanity--there aren't many juniors. Dead relatives are fair game, and one may meet an Edwarlo Scott Chan III, who isn't the child of Edwarlo II, but rather his great-nephew. Names are typically in triplicate--such as Anniela Sten Reidger--who would be known familiarly as Anniela (or Annie) and formally as Ms. Reidger.

  24. Heldannic & Dwarven names *warning: long* (courtesy of n

    #24
Heldannic culture is Dwarven culture in many respects. Both the Humans and Dwarves of that land have relied upon one another so heavily, that they are essentially one people. Thus it is no surprise that the names common to one become names of the other.

Last names are formed almost exclusively from the name of the father, grandfather, or another ancestor. Thus a proper name may be Duin Abrahamsson, and his child might be known as either Thorin Duinsson or Thorin Abrahamsblood. Sometimes a more extended version is used, such as "Son of," "Blood of," or both: Thorin Son of Duin Abrahamsblood. Note that this is all from the perspective of the individual, so that Duin was Abraham's son, but Thorin will refer to himself as Son of Duin Abrahamsblood. Three generations is the practical limit, so that on occassion you may hear someone introduce himself as Yaphet Baggisson Grandson of Karl Garonssblood--Garon in this example could either be Karl's father or dozens of generations past.

Dwarven and Heldannic women use a similar method. Thorin's daughter, Amaris, may call herself Amaris Thorinsdaughter, Amaris Daughter of Thorin, Amaris Goransdaughter (after her mother), Amaris Abrahamsblood, or if married she may call herself Amaris Thorinsdaughter Wife of Ivak Joshuasblood. Note that her own ancestry takes precedence over her husband or his ancestry. While there are many features of Dwarven/Heldannic society that might be considered sexist by a modern (or Formourian) viewpoint, it is not always the male who passes his name along. It is certainly the most common, but one who's mother was an infamous warrior may wish to be associated with her and take Rachelsson as his last name. It is most common however, to use one's father or grandfather for your own name, and a woman is rather more likely than her brothers to take their mother's name, but is still more likely to use her father's name.

  25. Aargh! Diaresis!

    #25
    Tinöviel
    Tinür

See that little "two-dots" symbol above those letters? They're called a "diaresis". Many people use them in Elven names. They do this because Tolkien did it, and so it tends to be associated with that sort of Tolkien-style name. People assume that Tolkien did this because it imparts some sort of accent to the letters below it.
    WRONG!
Tolkien used the diaresis to denote separate sounds. Since there is a diaresis above the "a" in "Earendil" (Sorry, my keyboard can't do the diaresis), it is pronounced "Ee-ar-en-dil", not "Eer-en-dil".
Therefore, the diaresis, when placed above the vowels in the quoted names above, DO ABSOLUTELY NOTHING! They mean nothing at all. If you meant them to impart an accent of some sort, you should have used an accent mark.

Examples of where to use the diaresis:
Tineur- above the "u", so that it is "Tin-ae-ur", instead of "Tin-your".
Aeleb- above the first "e", so that it is "Ay-el-eb", instead of "Ale-eb".
Bear- above the "e" or the "a", so that it is "Bee-ar"/"Bey-ar", instead of simply "behr".

    'Nuff said.

That depends entirely upon the language in question. For example, in German, the umlauts above a vowel denote separate sounds. When written in a format that does not allow them, the letter "e" follows the vowel in question. For that particular language, accent marks would be a strange and foreign addition to any word.

Of course, since this is an alien and fantasy species, living on an alien and fantastic other world, any discourse of the possible characteristics of their language is academic at best. Since you weren't sitting within earshot of nameless & myself when compiling these names, you have no way to know what the "proper" pronunciation really is, other than your own imagination when puzzling out what you can see in your browser window. Phonetic conglomerates were made, with rationale given to possible linguistic structures of the Elven language, based on what was already established for that species within the confines of the particular game world. The nonstandard-English characters used in the example names were chosen because they mapped to real-world languages that used those very same characters for the sounds selected as the Elven phonemes & conglomerates. Since the Elven language in this setting has already been established as being quite complex & specific in design, such distinct demarcation, and indeed transliteration, of sounds made simple sense. To say that they were chosen "because Tolkien did it," is fallacious. Admittedly, the use of umlauts adds to an alien look & "feel" to the names, which works quite well for Midianite Elves.

Then again, it's a rather random selection of names for a game, and doesn't merit becomming upset over. Those whose browsers do not allow them to see these alternate characters (perhaps with a question mark or blank rectangle in their place) are likely wondering what it is we are even discussing.

Here are a few from my campaign:

    D'huianna Trisko (F, Dark Elf)
    Tippa Katna (F, Halfling)
    Alfhere (M, Human)
    Naomi Nemesis (F, Elf!)
    Arowyn (F, Elf)
    Liawyn (?)
    Lucia de Talbot (F, Human)

Why do girls NEVER play boys? I wish I had a few brothers.

Some of my girls have played male characters on occasion. They have done an excellent job too.
But when my boys play female characters.... Ohhh, thats baaad! Boys just can't play girls...

Trolloc - as in Wheel of Time?
Nope, soz. Perhaps they don't have them? Or they just call each other "Ugh" or "Errr" as they feel like it.
    That could get really confusing.

Well, we don't have an absolute monopoly on fantasy settings, Sent. Things are different in different worlds- for instance, there aren't really any trolls in my Empire setting.

Kinda' depends on the Troll, like I said before.
I would suggest something like "Ug", or "Kaa", or something guttural and cave-man-ish like that.

You know one thing I really hate? It is all these so called fantasy worlds that have not generated a rationalist revolution, that are psuedo medival, that have modern style First and Last Names. The two name naming convention did not come into being in Europe until the late 1600s (and was side by side with the old naming convention even during that time). There is the Latin country naming conventions (three names, combined last names, and saints relations), which is a hybrid of the "old way" and the "new way". Most other coutries follow the modern naming convention because of English/ European Imperialism.

The one main reasons is that most people don't use a more historically accurate naming convention is that they would have to actually generate a home city/ region and the name of a father (and or his profession). That would be two basic parts of a character's conception history that seems to be beyond most people. After all, aren't all adventurers homeless orphans who lost there parents to terrible events when they were young and raised themselves?

The naming convention in most of Europe, pre 1680s, is First Name, Father's name, and city/ region they were from.
Using an Italian Example, Arturius di ser Leonardo da Roma or Arturius, son of Leonardo, from Rome.

See how simple that is? So why are you Arthur Black Sword? (or worse yet SAM the III, becuse you have died twice before.
