The Staff of the Traveling Wizard

This is the staff used by the Traveling Wizard on his journeys. It is a powerful staff with a past even older than the wizard who carries it. This item has a past, and there is more to it than meets the eye.

Appearance
The staff is a smooth wooden quarterstaff that is very straight and very normal looking. It could be anybodys walking stick. There are no enscriptions or runes of any kind on it. It is a simple wooden quarterstaff.

History and Use
This item was actually not crafted by the Traveling Wizard, he found it on one of his journeys. He and his companions encountered it in a tomb after being sent to find and retrieve a powerful magic rod from the same tomb. In this strange tomb that housed the powerul magic rod there was a room full of inscriptions. Leaning in the corner was the staff. The wizard tried to read the strange pictographs and symbols on the wall. What he could decipher of the wall was that this was the burial place of an archmage of the old kingdom and also the protection chamber of the magical rod. The Traveling Wizard believes that it was the staff of the dead archmage. However, it is even older than that. The staff was made as a gift for the wizard who orginally helped clear these lands of the local beasts. It is an intelligent item, designed to store the knowledge of the time in which the lands became civilized. But since then it has learned many things in being weilded by a number of mages, including the dead archmage. It feels its purpose is to protect civlizitation from those who would tear it down. it can communicate with its weilder via a telepathic link. It keeps quiet for the most part but it will respond when its weilder communicates with it. It will provide its weilder with any information he might need that the staff containes. The staff calls itslef Brintek and does provide advice about tactics and any other information it believes might be helpful. Although the staff is not active, it does want its weilder to protect civilization as was its originaly its purpose and it is pleased when it can help in that fasion. However, the staff will help its weilder with its knowledge in any stiuation is it believes that its weilder is honorable.

Magical Properties:

The staff gives spell resistance 19 to its carrier and acts as a Clear Ion Stone, sustaining its carrier without food or water.
It also alows the caster to cast the spells once per day in addition to the spells he/she already has prepared.

Dispel Magic - Ends ongoing spells in area
Knock - Opens locked, stuck, or magicaly locked doors
Invisibility - Target vanishes from sight
Teleport Without Error - Instantly transports to a destination
Leomund's Secure Shelter - Creates a small cottage for a limited time

The staff is intelligent. It can comunicate with the carrier through telepathic speech, much like the Familiar link.

    Yo! Almar! Interesting item.

    Who's the Traveling Wizard?

Also, please note that this is a Non-System Site. We don't use the D20 system, or the 'Player's Handbook' for what we do on this site.

This is a good item, but there aren't any drawbacks listed for it. With the spell resistance of a level I believe may be high, the no needing to eat or drink, and the handful of powerful spells, I would hope that it has something to balance it.

Like, what does it do if the weilder does something it doesn't like? What if it is weilded by someone it doesn't like, say a Chaos mage? What does it want for itself, other than the alturistic 'keep civilisation alive' thing?

Almar, could you put a character listing in for your Travelling Wizard, and make sure to edit this post so it has a link to that character?

Y'know, Anonymous, you're right. It is cliche.

That last post was from me. I don't know how you see this a cliche, I certainly wasn't thinking of any generic items of frequently used plot devices when I wrote it. Of course intelligent items have been used before, even those that communicate via a telepathic link but that doesn't make it a cliche.

It may not be exactly cliche, but what is unique about it? There are lots of similar items on other pages. It has a history you don't need to remember, and a few handy spells for any mage. If I try to think of a stereothypical powerful travelling wizard, he is likely to carry a staff like this.

That is a more accurate issue. It may not be unique enough. It is a sterotypical powerful traveling wizard's staff suppose. The part of it that is supposed to spice things up is the intelligence and telepathic ability of the staff. If it seems to boring, it could be spiced up by the staff wanting the weilder to do more, or it could speak with a voice instead of telepathicaly so anybody could hear it.

hmm... it's ok... Could be a little more unique though.
