Been out of the world for a spell...like to walk it a while.
#1[OOC: I have a character that I'd like to play with, but unfortunately she is more of a secondary character than a lead. To use the cliche, she's the "older mentor" type, partially inspired by Shepard Book from Firefly. Being that she is a secondary type, it's hard for me to come up with a good starting post, but I'll do my best. :)]
In the middle of the bustling streets of Pendel, a lone figure stood gazing around her. It had been centuries since Liothryth had been to Pendel, and in that time it had gone from a small, muddy village to a large center of commerce.
Dressed in the layered, dull colored robes of the monastery where she had spent so many years, she stood out from those around her who seemed to be dressed to show off their wealth. She had a small traveler's pack on her back, along with a wooden staff that was a few inches taller that she was.
A passerby bumped into her just hard enough to knock Liothryth's hood from her head. It revealed that she was an elf, and slightly past her prime. Her hair was pulled back into a demure knot, low on the back of her head. More interesting were the scars on her face. There were only three, and not very deep, but they were large enough to be very noticeable.
Nodding almost imperceptibly and squaring her shoulders, she starting walking toward a nearby tavern. -

#2(OOC: questions. Is this straight medieval fantasy or? Also, do you have a plot in mind or is this more loosey-goosey, see where it goes type of game idea?) -
Re: Been out of the world for a spell...like to walk it a while.
#3[OCC: Straight medieval fantasy, unless someone thinks of something really cool. I have a plot in mind, I kinda just wanted to play around and see what happens.] -

#4(OOC: k, I think I'll jump in. Just need to think up a character right quick.) -
Re: Been out of the world for a spell...like to walk it a while.
#5Sonata worried the small leather pouch between thumb and forefinger, feeling for coins.
That was almost too easy, she thought, not without a twinge of disappointment. A young woman with no remarkable features, Sonata knew that being overlooked had certain. . . advantages. Like when picking pockets.
Sonata glanced back over her shoulder for signs of pursuit, just in time to catch a glimpse of pointed ears and a stern countenance before the woman pulled her hood back up.
An elf?
Sonata felt her pace slow, even as she reflexively touched the small iron amulet hidden beneath her shirt. An involuntary shiver ran up her spine. It couldn't be; elves were extinct. At least they were in this part of the world. Almost without willing it, Sonata turned and began to tail the woman from a discrete distance. It was probably just her eyes playing tricks on her, but she had to know.
[OOC: will let you define what's in the pouch, Mirafin. Can also delete this post if I overstepped.] -
Re: Been out of the world for a spell...like to walk it a while.
#6Risbert had not been in Pendel long, but was already minus his belt pouch. The thieves and pick-pockets were a downright epidemic here in Pendel.
He cursed under his breath again, as he smelled something frying in the kitchens of the Preening Peacock. Unfortunately he was now coinless, and could not afford a bowl of stew, nevermind a roasted haunch.
Finishing his lone mug of watered-down ale, the young, lithe hedge-knight, stared around the inn, flicking his straw-colored hair from his eyes.
He had no purpose, he thought again for the hundredth time. He came to Pendel a week ago, seeking a way he could make a living. Now he would have to figure out where he would be spending the night. He searched his empty pockets out of instinct once more, than sighed, and looked out of the small inn window beside his table.
Now what, "Ser" Risbert the Penniless? He chided himself. Should have apprenticed himself to the Kennel-Master back in Greth, like his father had told him.

Re: Been out of the world for a spell...like to walk it a while.
#7[OOC: No worries, Dossta, I like the challenge. Also, I'd like to apologize in advance, I'm on my phone now, so the posts may be a bit short.]
Liothryth paused for the barest moment, the pouch was missing! Letting her senses flow out of her she felt it in another's hands. She felt the person's gaze on her. Ah, following me, are you? She continued on her way to the Tavern door, quickly ducking to one side as she entered the dim interior.
As she waited for the theif to enter, she eyes took in the room. Taverns had changed little over the years. She sniffed the aromas around her. Ale and a haunch of beef, what would Brother Aldrich say? -
Re: Been out of the world for a spell...like to walk it a while.
#8Crysilda stared at the belt pouch that suddenly gets shoved into her hands. She turned to see who could possibly have committed the deed but amidst the crowd, it was impossible to identify the person. Should she hand this into a constable? But it's very likely that she will be accused of being the thief. I will bring it back to the Peacock and ask Mistress what I shall do with it. Crysilda decided and headed towards the tavern where she makes her home in. -
Re: Been out of the world for a spell...like to walk it a while.
#9[OCC: Edited so Moonlake's plan can happen. :)]
As she waited next to the door, Liothryth gave herself a strong talking to.
Here I am, not a week out of the monastery and the Stones get stolen from me in the first city I reach. Either I was was right and I should have stayed, or Mother Beris was right and I should have left much sooner.
"Whichever it is, I'm a fool..." she said quietly to herself. Though her voice was low, her accent - one that hadn't been heard in the area for hundreds of years - would have been enough to draw the attention of anyone who was close enough and who was paying attention. -
Re: Been out of the world for a spell...like to walk it a while.
#10Risbert's attention quickly went from the window to the figure that had just entered the establishment.
Wiping away the mop of hair from his face again, the young hedge-knight found himself unabashedly staring at the speaker and trying to hear her words. That accent...Risbert had never heard before, but the "lady" seemed to be in some sort of distress. A job for a hedge knight if ever there was one!
Risbert nearly leapt out his chair and approached the figure. As he looked at her face, his eyes went wide again. Never had he seen an elf before! His father spoke of them, but never saw one himself either. Now young Risbert had a chance to actually meet one!
A few moments of awkward staring and silence, then he cleared his throat, and found his tongue again.
"M'lady, I am sure no greater fool exists than I..." wait, what the hell was he saying? "Ahem, my name is Risbert of Greth. Some call me Ris, some call me Bert. I much prefer Ris." As he listened to himself, he felt the fool again.
"I have not been in Pendel long, but if I may offer my services to you in any way... Pendel is a dangerous place. You have had some trouble?"
Risbert shut up and looked down at his feet. Nothing he was saying came out the way he wanted it to.
An elf! And by the gods he couldn't even afford to buy her an ale. Did elves drink ale?
-
Re: Been out of the world for a spell...like to walk it a while.
#11As Risbert began to speak, Liothryth grimaced slightly. Well, there goes my trap... Shaking her head, she smiled slightly. He's so young...well, I guess everyone is...
Looking at the hedge-knight before her she could see something in his eyes that she had seen so many times before. A thirst to prove himself, accompanied, like it was so often, by an actual hunger of the body. Knowing that she could never truly lose track of the Stones, she decided to have a meal with him. Perhaps he could help her through this strange new world she found herself in.
"Thank you, sir knight. I had a bit of trouble outside, but I'm sure it will resolve itself in time. I too am but recently arrived in Pendel, and it has been many years since I was last here. Perhaps you would share a meal with me, long years of fellowship in the monastery have left me unused to dining alone."
Well done, Liothryth, those speech patterns do not sound at all out of place. She cleared her throat, "shall we go back to your table? The meal will of course be my treat, as I was the one who asked you." -
Re: Been out of the world for a spell...like to walk it a while.
#12A hedge-knight, unlike a true knight, is not averse to accepting occasional charity.
Risbert nodded quickly, his bushy locks shaking vigorously and led the elf back to his table.
"Th-thank you" he offered meekly, "As it happens I was recently robbed, and have nary a coin to my name. To be truthful, I am not even sure where I'll be spending the night. Lying down in some "hedge" I suppose, like a proper hedge-knight." He smiled.
A server came by and Risbert deferred to his table companion as far as what to order.
"Tell me," He said after the sever left. "What brings you to Pendel in the first place?" He tried to make simple conversation but was finding it hard not to simply stare at the...elf(!)

Re: Been out of the world for a spell...like to walk it a while.
#13The elf -- no, the woman (It can't be an elf) -- entered the Peacock and Sonata relaxed. Those with a mind for food or drink were unlikely to be moving for awhile yet. She had time to check her haul. Ducking briefly into a nearby stall, Sonata pretended to inspect the wares, then pulled out the pouch to check its contents. She made a small show of looking for change as her fingers sifted through the contents with a practiced professionalism.
Some coins of an odd shape and stamping, nothing Sonata recognized, but they would probably fetch a collector's price. A flint and steel. A piece of cord. And . . .
Sonata's fingers brushed something hard, icy to the touch. A shock of sensation jolted up her arm at the contact, and she nearly dropped the pouch. Digging her hand back in, she carefully rolled the objects around in her palm. There were three of them, weighty as gems but larger than anything she had ever held before. Sonata's evaluation of her situation changed drastically, for the worse. Theft was barely tolerated in Pendel to begin with -- the "appropriation" of large wealth would cost a hand. The theft of *magical* wealth would probably cost Sonata her head. It was time for some damage control.
Smiling a bit sickly at the waiting merchant, Sonata shook her head and excused herself from the store. She scanned the crowd for a likely dupe and spied a young woman passing in the opposite direction. She barely seemed cognizant of her surroundings. Dumping the stones into an inner pocket but leaving the rest, Sonata drifted up behind Crysilda and shoved the pouch into her hands, mumbling something incoherent. Then she melded back into the crowd.
Sonata decided that she would circle around the block a few times before approaching the Peacock, to give herself time to check for the Guard. By all rights, she should leave the district, and fast. But she just couldn't bring herself to leave yet. She felt *drawn* to the hooded woman, and Sonata knew that she wouldn't be able to sleep tonight if she didn't see her again. It was a stupid risk, but Sonata couldn't just walk away.
Not without knowing if elves still existed.
[ooc: passed off the pouch to your char, Moonlake, but Sonata isn't willing to part with the stones quite yet.] -
Re: Been out of the world for a spell...like to walk it a while.
#14[ooc: Dossta's post changed the game plan but I will happily go along with it since my post just came on the spur of the moment and sorta begs some questions]
Crysilda walked into the tap room of the Peacock and headed towards the Mistress standing in front of the bar. She looked about to move off. Crysilda quickly accosted her. "Mistress, I have something... something to ask your advice of. Can we find a quiet corner to..."
"I'm busy right now, girly, be quick about you."
Reluctantly, Crysilda pulled out the pouch. She tried to shield it from curious eyes somewhat but her stalk-thin body wasn't a great asset for such an enterprise. -
Re: Been out of the world for a spell...like to walk it a while.
#15After Liothryth and Risbert sat down at the table, Liothryth signaled for the serving maid to come over. "Two ales and a beef haunch each, I think."
After the serving maid left, she turned back to Risbert. "Forgive my rudeness, I should have I introduced myself sooner. I am Liothryth, lately of the monastery at Wegen."
Suddenly her eyes flared with anger so fierce it was nearly enough to make Risbert feel fear. She spoke a few words in a language he couldn't understand, but the meaning was fairly obvious. That theif had dared to touch the Stones! Liothryth closed her eyes, forcing herself to calm down. She could feel that the theif was still nearby, there would be enough time to eat before beginning pursuit.
Opening her eyes again, Liothryth was about to apologize, but her eyes rested on Crysilda holding the pouch.
After excusing herself, Liothryth walked over to Crysilda. Reaching around from behind the girl, Liothryth placed a hand over Crysilda's. "I know you did not steal this, and I don't know how it came to you, but I would appreciate it if you would return it to me now." -
Re: Been out of the world for a spell...like to walk it a while.
#16Did she just do...magic? He was amazed, but did his best not to show it.
Trying to be polite before, Ris took this opportunity to tear into his haunch and devour it, while Liothryth was engaging what seemed like a tavern worker in conversation.
Liothryth, he thought. The name was so exotic and beautiful. Much nicer sounding than Risbert. And from a monastery. He didn't remember if his father ever mentioned Elven monks before, but no matter, this was shaping up to be a very interesting day in his otherwise drab existence!
Just then another woman, unremarkable but looking somewhat tense, entered the Preening Peacock. Risbert looked up briefly at her, then went back to his haunch.
Suddenly curiousity got the better of him. What had just happened there? He rose and approached the bar where the Elf was conversing with a stick-figure of a lass. He wondered what had made Liothryth so angry a few minutes earlier. -
Re: Been out of the world for a spell...like to walk it a while.
#17Crysilda turned to the woman who've grabbed her from behind. She stammered, "I, I....."
Before she said anything further, she suddenly felt a shadow enclosing over her demure stature. She glanced up to see a tall and burly warrior scowling down at her. She recoiled out of reflex.
[ooc: posted up a sec after you, Muro, tell me if this doesn't work] -
Re: Been out of the world for a spell...like to walk it a while.
#18(OOC: yeah no worries. I added a line about walking over. Also, hahaha, those two pouches and the sleight of hand confused everyone :P) -
Re: Been out of the world for a spell...like to walk it a while.
#19A Tall man entered, he was bald and dressed like a monk except for the scroll he carried on his shoulder. he looked around severly and took in the whole scene. standing a luff he eyed the many people in the room. He looked like a monk but carried himself like a mage. His eyes everywhere. He took a seat and ordered a simple meal. The eyes of a predator betrayed him.witha simple order he got a meal anda drink. and surveyed the territory. -
Re: Been out of the world for a spell...like to walk it a while.
#20Liothryth looked deeply into Crysilda's eyes and smiled gently. "You have no reason to fear me, child, I would simply like my pouch back." She covered each of the girl's hands with one of her own. "These hands did not take it from me, the one they belong to shall not be punished for something she didn't do."
Liothryth's voice was low and soothing, weaving a feeling of calm and being cared for over all who heard it. Gently, Liothryth pulled the pouch out of the girl's hands. "Perhaps you would care to join this good knight and I in a meal."
[OOC: I have an idea about the stones, but I need to change their name to Soul Stones instead of Memory Stones, if no one minds. Also, welcome Aramax!] -
Re: Been out of the world for a spell...like to walk it a while.
#21Glancing back over her shoulders, Crysilda saw a nod from Mistress. Swallowing back the lump that had risen to her throat, she started to follow the woman and the warrior back to their table. She kept her gaze down on her own toes as she trailed after them.
Suddenly, she saw everything being turned sideways as she fell and crashed into a customer sitting alone at a table. She apologised profusely, hoping that whoever she knocked over would have mercy on her. She really could not afford to lose this job. Ever since her own seamstress shop was forced into closure by the exorbitant fees demanded by the authorities, she could find no place willing to take her in until the Mistress happened to need an extra tavern wench. While her wage was meagre compared to what she was used to earning herself before the high tolls on merchants came in, the Mistress was willing to provide for her accommodation and food, something she solely needed then and now.
When she ran out of words, she looked up and saw that the one she had knocked over was a monk. -
Re: Been out of the world for a spell...like to walk it a while.
#22[OOC: Soul Stones, got it. Gives me an idea, too. :) Working on a response now. . .] -
Re: Been out of the world for a spell...like to walk it a while.
#23The burning started in her fingertips.
Sonata had gone perhaps half a block of her planned route before the pain flared up, as hot and as sudden as her first contact with the stones had been cold. She hissed out a breath, clutching her right hand convulsively to her breast. Acid? Some sort of thieves' bane? Those were her first thoughts, but a close inspection of her fingertips showed none of the telltale peeling or reddening common to such poisons. Her fingers were pink, but whole.
The pain grew worse, and Sonata bowed her head, resolutely walking forward. She had a tenuous contact in the Scroll District, someone who'd helped her out of a magical jam once or twice before without involving the authorities. The price was always high, but Sonata would never allow herself to be in debt to that man. The thought of it made her shiver. It was only ten minutes' walk away . . .
Two minutes later found her retracing her steps, more quickly than before. Her entire hand burned. It was worse than thieves' bane. Worse than what Requiem used to do to her when she went against his orders. She didn't know how much longer she could tolerate the pain without losing her wits, and so sought out the only help near to hand. The elf.
Sonata took a breath at the door of the Peacock and raised her hood, torn between a thief's natural caution and the mounting pain in her hand. In the end, the pain won. She thinned her lipped and walked into the inn, making her way directly to a small booth near the back door. She would watch the elf first, try to gauge her probable reaction to being confronted with the thief that had made off with those gems. She dared not approach directly, at least yet. After all, Sonata thought grimly, I can always lose a hand. There are worse things in this life, for a thief.
[OOC: Set up a possible backstory contact with Aramax, if he wants to bite. The guy in the Scroll District, not Requiem. *That* dude is a whole 'nother kettle of rotten fish, but will probably stay backstory for now.] -
Re: Been out of the world for a spell...like to walk it a while.
#24Liothryth was about to reach out to Crysilda, when she felt the Stones. Ah, the thief is back. Don't worry my friends, I will get you away from them soon.
The pain should be nearly unbearable by now, and moving it's way to their heart. Before long they will come to me. -
Re: Been out of the world for a spell...like to walk it a while.
#25[OOC: To clarify, I'm waiting for Aramax, Muro or Moon to make another post before chiming back in. Don't have a whole lot more to go on at the moment, and their chars should get the spotlight now.] -
Re: Been out of the world for a spell...like to walk it a while.
#26[OOC: I'm doing the same. I'd also like to apologize if I'm posting too much, I'm just so excited to be able to do this again that I may be posting when I should wait.] -
Re: Been out of the world for a spell...like to walk it a while.
#27(OOC: I thought we were waiting for Aramax. We were heading back to the table together, when Moonlake slammed into him. Not sure what I can add at the moment. We return to the table... :) ) -
Re: Been out of the world for a spell...like to walk it a while.
#28[OOC: Same as Muro, waiting for Aramax to make post about what he gonna do when I slam into him. Aramax indicated that he will not longer post and is okay with his char being taken over. Does GM want to bite?] -
Re: Been out of the world for a spell...like to walk it a while.
#29Kelad
"YOU CLUMSY LITTLE FOOL!" Kelad jumped up to his feet and loomed over Crysilda. He did not appear to be injured in any way, and in fact, had barely been bumped. "How dare one such as you touch one such as me!"
He made a show of brushing off his garments, which were spotless. He was very fine and expensive looking robes with many mystical looking symbols embroidered on them.
"I'll have your job for this, you little wrech!" He gestured wildly while he spoke, the bejeweled rings on each of his fingers flashing in the torch light.
[OOC: Fun fact: Kelad (Dalek spelled backwards, is the big villan in the game I'm running.] -
Re: Been out of the world for a spell...like to walk it a while.
#30"Sor...sorry.... Master...no, good Monk...no....Abbot....hmmm... I am really really profusely sorry." Crysilda kept pleading with the intimidating man threatening to destroy her livelihood. Tears rushed out from the corners of her eyes. "Please, all I have now is this job." -
Re: Been out of the world for a spell...like to walk it a while.
#31This unexpected outburst snapped Ris to attention. His pale ears and cheeks were already flushing crimson.
"Sirrah." He said evenly to the bejeweled ponce, "While I draw breath, I cannot abide such rudeness and impertinence. I demand you apologize to the lady at once..." Another thing that Ris could not abide were tears from the fairer sex.
With this, Ris' bony hand clasps his still sheathed longsword and the hedge-knight withdraws it half-way, trying to look as intimidating as he can. As intimidating as a somewhat gangly twenty year old can look anyway. The mop of blonde curls doesn't help either. -
Re: Been out of the world for a spell...like to walk it a while.
#32Kelad
"Apologize to that worm?! Impossible! I am a Master Mage! I do not apologize to specks! Get out of my way you welp!" Kelad raised his hand, as if to strike Ris.
Liothryth
Liothryth had ended up behind Kelad when he rose from his seat. As he spoke her face turned stony, when he raised his hand to Ris, her contempt became visable. She slowly drew her staff from behind her and held it ready to strike. -
Re: Been out of the world for a spell...like to walk it a while.
#33Ris unsheathed his sword fully, took a step back and tensed, but could not bring himself to strike first. "I've had just about enough of Pendel!" He said and readied himself. Too bad his shield was back at the table still leaning against his chair. -
Re: Been out of the world for a spell...like to walk it a while.
#34Behind Ris, Crysilda stared bleary-eyed at the stand-off between the monk, the lady whose belt pouch was foisted on her and her would-be-menacer-turned-protector. She didn't know what she could do. She could only stare at the three as if captivated. -
Re: Been out of the world for a spell...like to walk it a while.
#35"Fancy seeing you here, Kelad."
The woman's voice cut through the sudden silence like a knife, defusing some of the tension. Sonata raised her hood, doing a creditable job at disguising the trembling in her hand by brushing a stray lock of dark hair back from her face.
"One almost believes the old adage of bad fortune running in threes." She smiled grimly and tossed him a pouch with a couple of twisting symbols on it. "Why not cool your heels and enjoy a pinch of BlackWood's finest? Consider it a token of my esteem -- coupled with my desire to finish the dinner I already paid for. Can't eat if the Peacock burns down."
Sonata dared not look at the elf yet, but she let her eyes run over the young knight appreciatively. She felt a grudging admiration for a man who would stand up for a girl in this city, but wondered if that blade was just for show.
-
Re: Been out of the world for a spell...like to walk it a while.
#36Kelad
Kelad caught the bag and held it up to his nose sniffing deeply. "Blackwood's finest! *sniff* Why, thank you Sonata! *sniff* My goodness! *sniff* I think I'll just...*sniff*" He continued to smell the contents of the bag as he sat back down, now ignoring his meal.
Liothryth
The theif!
Liothryth turned to Sonata, the only emotion on her face one of friendly greeting. "Your assistance is most appreciated. Might I invite you to join us at our table? One should always enjoy the company of good people when one has the opportunity." -
Re: Been out of the world for a spell...like to walk it a while.
#37Sonata counted slowly backwards from ten, before a Kelad fell face-forward into his plate with a soft *thump*. She grimaced, then turned to face the elf.
"Not all people are good, I'm afraid -- either him, or me. Though I suspect you knew that already." Sonata met the elf's eyes, but didn't attempt to rise -- talking was enough of an effort now. Her gaze was fearful, but unapologetic. "I guess we have some things to talk about, now." -
Re: Been out of the world for a spell...like to walk it a while.
#38Liothryth
Liothryth's eyes became compassionate. "I guess we do." As she reached out with her right hand to touch the hand in which Sonata had held the Stones, Sonata saw a small bronze band with some kind of design on Liothryth's middle finger. As the ring came into contact with Sonata's hand the pain began to disappear. "Return with us to our table. You will not be fully healed until the Stones are returned."
With that, Liothryth turned to Ris. "Ser Ris, would you please help her to our table?" -
Re: Been out of the world for a spell...like to walk it a while.
#39Ris did as he was told. He was now officially out of his element. After helping Sonata to the table he plunked down in his chair and shut up. Sword re-sheathed, he could do little but stare at everyone, haunch forgotten. Risbert had three sisters and a domineering mother. He knew just what to do now. Dont speak unless spoken to. Ris idled and glared at the bushy-browed monk with the strange robe of sigils...who for some reason was now face down in his plate. What was happening? -
Re: Been out of the world for a spell...like to walk it a while.
#40Crysilda sat tentatively on her seat, sitting so close to the edge that she could fall off any moment. She could feel something coming up on the air. She decided to make herself small so that whatever came up, she could just drift with it.
