  1. Thank You for the Warm Welcome

Greetings, O Mighty Companions of the Citadel,

I'm an "old school" gamer (you know, the sort that thought that Second Edition Dungeons and Dragons was wild and progressive) that wandered onto your site a few weeks ago and decided that I'd like to visit for a while.  I tend to play D and D for the most part, not because I like the system very much, but because everyone knows how to play it and I can make the system do anything I want.  Over the years, I've tried many systems, from GURPS and The Fantasy Trip, to Call of Cthulhu and Feng Shui.

When I saw the wonderful accumulation of ideas that you have here, I was instantly enchanted.  Captain Penguin's adventures, Scrasamax's Scrolls, Valadar's creatures... Wow!

Now I must find a way to seize control and rule!  Bwaa, Ha, Ha!!! (Insert peal of thunder here)

    Yr. Obd't. Servant,
    Wulfhere

    Welcome, Wulfhere!

It seems you were drawn by the same reasons I was back in the summer of 2004.
    Good reasons those.

Enjoy your stay. I hope to see a lot more of your posts in the future.

What can I say but that I am impressed by your work. It is well written, the ideas are tasty, and it seems that you have a good sense of humor. I like all of that in a writer. I found the citadel back in the begining of 2004 surfing through other gaming sites and was similarly hooked and have been here pretty much ever since. I hope to see more of your work in the future, I find it enjoyable to read and potentially useful. I say potentially since I've not a game group to play with.

Scras, you'd better get busy and recruit a gaming group!  I need guinea pigs to playtest my ideas!

    Sincerely,
    Agarn... I mean Wulfhere...

Wulfhere, are you of the hill people?

Glad to see you jumping right in :!:

Do you have a favorite system of the ones you have tried?

My group always played Palladium. We all new that system and could take great liberties with it and we found it more fun than the AD+D stuff that we suffered through when we had other players DM occasionnally.

Wulfhere, I would love to get a gaming group together, but  the region of the country I live in is a bit lean on gamers. I live in the buckle of the Bible Belt in Tennessee. In this region, a copy of Dungeons and Dragons is more likely to get a responce along the lines of 'You should be reading the bible instead of that,' or something silly aobut games being the work of the devil. So, the main vents for my gaming and creatives urges are gaming with my wife (Appaloosa here at the Citadel) and here at the Citadel.

I started playing Dungeons and Dragons, still have alot of the books, but my big area of experience is with Vampire, Werewolf, and Mage from White Wolf. My game group didnt dabble in swords and sorcery very long.

    So, here I am.

    Wulfhere Welcome!

I like your work and your intro reminded me a lot of..my own life story. Hope to see lots more from you. Your posts are refreshingly clever and a joy to read!

Welcome to our place, Wulfhere. Take a seat, have some donut, or grog if that is what you like... now where are those people... ah, whatever.

Now, if you are comfortable, we want even more. :) We always hunger for new ideas, and you seem to be a good supplier.

    Again, welcome.

Hill People?  That would be my friend, Lothar.

I've never been attached to any one system.  I've used GURPS for realistic "hard" Sci Fi gaming (Traveller setting) and some "Low" Fantasy.  I've played D&D since 1977.  I've enjoyed Call of Cthulhu for horror and I'm fond of playing Feng Shui for freewheeling cinematic games (ancient and modern).  Each system has its own advantages (and disadvantages).

The story is more important than the system.  The Feng Shui rules should be required reading for GMs, not because the rules are good (they aren't that good), but because the philosophy they sell is so worthwhile.  Feng Shui drives home the point that rules that discourage fun games are a detriment rather than a help.
When someone does something COOL, give them a bonus, not a minus.  After all, which is better: "I lunge up from my seat, hurling the wooden bench at the sorceror as I shout my battle cry, 'Nyrond and Lynward!" or the more common "I draw my sword and swing at the sorceror.  Again."  I've seen DMs that made bar-room brawls seem like a complete drag.

    Amen!

system is unimportant...story, ambience, atmosphere rule the day!

77'? you got me beat by 5 years.

My God. You started playing when MoonHunter did!

We have another grand sage onsite then!

As for me I got interested in fantasy in the eighties, but did not pick up proper roleplaying until I started GMing in 1989. You got me beat by 12 years ;)

Realization dawns upon AG: He played DnD since 1977.... DnD...

Ah, yes... System unimportant... DnD... unimportant...

    DnD...

    Hehe ;)

I was 11 years old when I started running games.  They were just as subtle and sophisticated as you would imagine them to be....

(The camera fades and blurs as memories surface...)
"I walk into the Red Dragon Tavern and tell them that we need to hire some more hirelings for our dungeon expedition." (Since the last ones died.  Again.)

"The Innkeeper points out a few fighters sitting in the corner.  They look like they need a job.  Before you can introduce yourself to them, a beautiful woman in a skimpy outfit walks up to you and tries to look into your eyes."

"SHE'S A SUCCUBUS!!! I pull out my Halberd and hit her!"

(Ahhh, the good old days.  Before I forgot that women are Daaaangerous.)

Ah, yes... System unimportant... DnD... unimportant...

    DnD...

A little perhaps. There is a lot of that going on here, but it is friendly mocking mind you. I've been into DnD for years and years myself, so I am sitting in quite the glass house. ;)

Crikey - quite a conversation in this thread!

How goes it Wulf? I'm Shadoweagle, and I suppose i'm on the opposite end of the spectrum from you and most of the others in the citadel - Whereas you've all been playing Tabletop for years and are seasoned veterans, i've yet to play a single game.

I scraped out a niche for myself on an online freeform roleplaying chatroom for a couple years, before I decided to search for different places to vent my ideas (and to isolate myself from the all-powerful children of the chatrooms!). By fortune I stumbled on this site via Google, and viola! Here I am.
So anyway. I guess you can say i'm more a fantasy writer than a roleplayer, but since i'd never be able to motivate myself to write an entire book, I just dump my thoughts in the main citadel.

Thumbs up on your submissions so far, and Keep 'em coming!

The withered traveler, his beard grown long and streaked with grey, shuffled slowly into the Andecine Chamber of Elder Dweomercrafts. Leaning heavily on his staff of gnarled blackwood, he placed the room's tarnish-blackened key back into his satchel, then knelt down to begin cleaning the dust-covered diagrams of conjuration.  Curious spirits congregated around him as he slowly wiped away the dust of centuries.

The traveler's voice had grown hoarse from disuse, his grip arthritic, his memories had faded with time and despair.  Only the spirits could hear him as he began whispering the prayer of summoning. "Do you still haunt these halls, old friends? Are our revels truly done, or do the embers of those ancient fires yet burn, waiting only for a breeze to rekindle them?" his voice queried the still air.

Life remains, and a breath could still bring fire from the embers.
